Stay away. Complete rip off and be very observant at the counter. I thought i paid deposit but they ended up charging me an extra insurance. Impossible to get in contact after.

Absolutely Horrific Experience with Thrifty

I booked a car through Economy Bookings with Thrifty, expecting to pay ~240€. In reality, I was charged over 800€ with hidden and unjustified fees.

The contact number on the booking confirmation was incorrect. It took me over 2 hours to find a working number, and even then, I was passed around between rude and unhelpful staff.

Staff repeatedly told me they “could not guarantee” my booking would be honored, even though I had confirmed my late-night arrival. This was incredibly stressful and showed zero empathy.

Upon arrival, I was hit with an “extra fee festival”:

45€ “late pick-up fee” (despite me calling ahead).

Over 100€ for fuel, including a 40€ “mandatory refueling fee” with no option to choose.

Refusal to accept my debit/overdraft card unless I purchased their 270€ insurance, despite already having full coverage through Economy Bookings.

To top it off, the car wasn’t even registered in the exit system, leaving me stuck at the barrier for 20 minutes and needing multiple calls to resolve it.

This was the most scammy and stressful rental experience I have ever had. Hidden fees, incompetent service, and zero transparency.

Avoid Thrifty at all costs — I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone.

Everything was great at Malaga Airport at first. The pickup went smoothly and quickly, the staff were polite and friendly, the car was clean and exactly as ordered. I returned the car fully refuelled and expected a full refund of the amount held on my credit card. HOWEVER, having returned home and having had to request a receipt from Thrifty by email , I discovered there was a charge for Thrifty's "Supercover" despite being told at the time, I was only leaving a fully refundable "key deposit" and fuel deposit. I already had full cover and presented my certificate and no further mention of insurance was raised by the lady at the desk. She asked me to initial in several places as I understood it, to validate the "key deposit". The Supercover option on the contract shows no rate listed, so I assumed I was accepting zero additional charges in that respect. I should have been more diligent in reading over the form - Lesson learnt. For this reason, I would not recommend Thrifty unless you are willing to buy their insurance rather than through a third party or be unwittingly charged for services you never wanted or required.
Ironically, I had read about these practices after booking but left it too late by just an hour to cancel the booking online - more fool me! I certainly won't use them again.

Having used thrifty a number of times I was more than happy to use them again on my recent trip to Alicante. The process went extremely smoothly until I returned home only to be charged an extra £85 the day after I returned. I questioned this with thrifty and was told it was for roadside assistance which I had agreed to take out. At no point did I request roadside assistance and at no point was I told I was being charged for it.

I have emailed thrifty regarding this unauthorised charge to be told that I had signed the document agreeing to the cover. Although I had signed the document I signed it on the understanding that I had explained to the member of staff that I did not require any additional cover and he assured me that they would hold €1000 on my card which would be returned once I had returned the car undamaged and with a full tank which I did.

The additional charge was then taken out the day after I returned home.

As a result I will never use this company again.

Never again. I don‘t want to relive the experience so I will keep this as short as I can: Staff at Thrifty Valencia Airport was very aggressive towards my father (70+ years old), tried to push him an “upgrade” against extra charges because the car he had booked was allegedly not yet available so he would have to wait. This came on top of the usual attempts to sell additional insurance cover although not needed. I arrived about 15 minutes later and staff first refused to speak with me because the booking was not in my name (although it was clear that my father had difficulties engaging in the discussion in English). When staff finally did speak with me he continued being aggressive suggesting we were stupid not to take the upgrade. We were frustrated with being treated like this and with having to wait that long for a car that was pre-booked for a specific time. Things then got more heated and Thrifty staff eventually “cancelled” the contract, refusing to provide any car. This was almost 1.5 hrs after the time we had booked the car for. I have no idea what was wrong with the person. He was so aggressive that I later wondered if he was on drugs.

We hired our car from thrifty as they are a budget company owned by hertz and so expected the same level of professionalism as you get from hertz.
The experience picking up the car was ok if a bit slow in an overheated multistory carpark whereas all the other multinationals have there offices in the terminal.
The real issue arises when you return the car.
On pick up the cars are parked in a dark lights off section of the car park where it is hard to see if there is any damage to the vehicle or not, but then when you return they have this super bright lit up area where they examine the car like its coming of the production line for scratches and dents.
We were lucky enough so far at least that they didnt charge us for any but the brother in law was not so lucky and got charged 200€ for a scratch that would have been impossible to see at pick up, Its like they know where the dents and scratches are and are charging for them over and over as the car was marked with 0 damage yet when the went to it there was a huge dent in the bonnet, which was so obvious and should have been showing on the original damage sheet

We paid for our car hire online. When we arrived at Valencia airport we were told that the “extra insurance” that we had purchased (cost £70) was not adequate and it would be really complicated if we had any issues. The women hiked up our car hire an additional £320. Never would I ever hire from this company again. Worked out nearly £100 a day for a Peugeot. Absolute rip off. AVOID AT ALL COST

Fantastisk udlejnings firma , har lejet bil ved dem flere gange , har altid fået meget bedre og større bil end vi havde booket 🤗 kanon service, to gange har vi fået større,og sprit ny bil , endda med automatgear den ene gang , vil klart leje hos den igen , hurtig levering , hurtig aflevering 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

If you value your sanity - PLEASE DO NOT - I REPEAT DO NOT BOOK A CAR RENTAL WITH THRIFTY - especially in ALICANTE AIRPORT. They will try to trick you and try to cheat you using every possible means to get to take their insurance even when you have clearly stated you do not want it. THE MOST TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVERY HAD WITH A CAR RENTAL COMPANY.

SCAMMERS!!!!! Hidden charges including ‘prem road’ which means premium road assistance. Something we did not ask for but we were charged €60 for. We were also charged €45 for refuelling service charge even though we returned full of fuel.

We had rented a car from Thrifty in Malaga for August 3, 2025, with maximum insurance, with zero excess, which meant that we were completely insured. Nevertheless, at the time of picking up the car, the receptionist informed us that we needed to pay for a new insurance costing €387, because the insurance we had purchased online (on their site) supposedly referred to Rentalcar (????) and not Thrifty. Without clearly explaining the relationship between Rentalcar and Thrifty, and taking advantage of the language barrier, the agent explained to us that instead of paying for the insurance, we could choose to put down a deposit of €1500. That was the choice I made, and at the time of paying this, the agent informed us that he had made a mistake, thinking my card was a credit card when it was actually a debit card. Therefore, I was charged €1500, but the transaction could not go through because of the wrong type of card. I was insulted and threatened by the agent after expressing my dissatisfaction to him, and after having paid the insurance of 387 euros that he offered me at the beginning. A disgrace!!!!!!

Deze partij licht je op! Ik had een auto gehuurd via Booking met een verzekering. Ter plaatse bij Thrifty in Spanje heb ik een formulier ondertekend waar klaarblijkelijk op staat dat ik nog een extra verzekering voor de auto wil. Dat is mij niet verteld. Sterker nog; de medewerker zei letterlijk: "you don't need to check the car for any damages because you have an insurance". Ze misleiden je waar je bij staat.

Vanvittigt dårligt bilfirma. Gav os en mindre bil end vi havde booked og tog efterfølgende 73€ af vores depositum selvom alt var ok. Svært at gøre noget ved Når det ligger i Spanien og de først trækker pengene når man er kommet hjem fra ferie. Uduelige FIRMA

Finger weg von Thrifty! Meine Visa-Karte (technisch eine Debit-Karte, jedoch mit der kompletten Kredit-Kartenfunktionalität) wurde als Zahlungsmittel für die Kaution am Flughafen Sevilla nicht akzeptiert, obwohl Thrifty die Kaution von 1000 EUR auf meinem Konto sperren konnte (konnte ich unter "vorgemerkte Umsätze" in der Bank-App sehen). Als "Lösung" stand dann nur eine sehr teure "all-inclusive" Versicherung (die hatte ich aber schon von Axa über mietwagen-billiger.de) zur Debatte. Diese musste ich dann kaufen, da ich sonst den Mietpreis nicht zurückerhalten hätte.

We rented a car at Corvera, Spain. I experienced the usual attempt to sell additional insurances which I was expecting. I explained I had 3rd party insurance so didn't require any waiver insurance and paid deposit by credit card so didn't need their "smart cover". I was given my agreement and told sign in the places with crosses. The advisor told me no other charges were being levied and that the amounts on the document, all in Spanish, were just taxes.
On return to the UK I was debited with additional insurances, that I was told I was not going to pay. The smart cover was also debited even though I never agreed to this.
I complained to Hertz but after weeks waiting for a response they finally responded by telling me if I had additional insurance I would not need to pay for more and explained what smart cover is.... No comprehension that these were charged covertly and basically constitutes theft but Hertz seem to be more than happy to condone this from their employees.
If you have any other options available to you take them... It will save you time and lots of money in the long run. Also be aware Hertz are the parent company of Thrifty... Both are out to con you out of money!
