Avis car hire
11.05.26. We arrived at Corfu airport to pick up a car from your Avis desk. We were asked, as we only had basic insurance, did we want to increase the cover or I would have nine hundred euros taken out of my account as a deposit. I agreed as I felt I had no option as I didn't want this money taken out of my account even though we would get it back if the car was undamaged. We were also advised to bring the vehicle back with an empty tank as Avis could buy the petrol cheaper (this is the first time I have been advised to do this as normally you bring the vehicle back with a full tank).
12.05.26 Vehicle 1, a Toyota Aygo lasted one day as we found water leaking from the passenger underside of the car. I rang Avis they asked me to bring the car back for an exchange. We were staying at the North end of the island but I agreed even though it meant a few hours wasted of our holiday. At the airport drop off point the Avis representative said something about I would have to pay for fuel used and they may have to charge for damage. I told the rep I brought the car back because of a water leak, not damage I had caused (photo taken) and it would be unfair to be charged for fuel as I wasn't intending to drive back to the airport the day after I left because the Avis office wasnt open at the end of the island we were at and as this has caused me to miss part of my holiday also that the car was fully covered. I still didn't understand why this was an insurance issue.
16.05.26 Vehicle 2 Opel Corsa BK06680 we were out and about when a intermittent clunking noise seemed to be coming from the driver side front wheel, when we went over 44kms per hour. I pulled over to see if there was a stone in the tyre, I checked the tyre and wheel over could not see or feel anything wrong, we immediately made our way back to the villa keeping below 44 kms an hour as the clunks seemed to happen around and over that speed, spoiling our day out. We rang Avis and spoke your representative, the options she gave me were 1. Drive the car back to the airport again or 2. Ring the break down service, wait for them to turn up then ring for a taxi to get me back to the airport to pick up another car. She did say to keep the taxi receipt for a refund. I was not happy with either option but decided to slowly drive the car back as this would waste less of our holiday time. Stopping roughly 10 minutes away from the airport I topped up the petrol, (pictures available)at the drop off point I explained to your rep the issue regarding the noise and that I had filled the tank up. He acknowledged I had done this and the tank was full. I was also informed I would receive an upgraded car at no extra cost.
Vehicle 3 Audi XHT6366. When I returned to the villa I received an estimated cost of rental and saw I would potentially be charged €11.47 for fuel for vehicle 1 and €76.03 for vehicle 2. And at a total cost of €568.60. I rang Avis I spoke to Ariadne, I was very angry but she said she did understand. I explained to her we have wasted a morning and afternoon sorting out Avis car issues and to be charged for petrol was unacceptable and also having to waste our time whilst on holiday. I explained to her regarding filling vehicle 2 up with fuel and that I had a photo of the pump to prove I filled the tank up roughly ten minutes away from the airport and photos of the car at the drop off point.
Ariadne then rang back and told me she had been off work but after speaking to her manager explained they had had computer issues and told me they would not charge for vehicle 1 or 2 fuel. (I did apologise for my outburst). I finally got my statement it still shows I am being charged €76.03 & €11.47 for petrol.
I have sent emails to several departments and as of today 12.08.2026 I have had no response.
