I recently attempted to open an account…
I recently attempted to open an account with Discover Bank, and while I was hopeful about the process, I faced some significant challenges that left me feeling frustrated.
Initially, the application process seemed straightforward. I filled out the online application and was directed to call in to complete the verification. During the call, I followed the instructions to provide my ID (both front and back) along with a selfie, and I did this three times. Each time, I received confirmation that everything was complete and was told, "Thank you, have a great day."
However, I was later informed that my verification had been rejected. This was confusing, as I had received confirmations indicating that my documentation was sufficient. Unfortunately, the customer service representative was unable to provide any specific reasons for the rejection, leaving me in the dark about what went wrong.
The lack of clarity and communication during the verification process was disappointing. It’s essential for banks to provide clear guidance, especially during something as critical as account verification.
While I appreciate that Discover Bank offers various financial products, my initial experience with account opening was not as smooth as I had hoped. I would recommend that they improve their verification process and customer communication to help avoid confusion for future applicants.
Overall, I had high hopes for banking with Discover, but this experience has left me reconsidering my options.
Kudos To the GOAT Discover Bank CS Rep, Ms. Mary!
I recently applied & was approved to open a checking account with Discover Bank in order to be able to link & transfer my checking account to a Visa or MC since only 99% of the planet accepts Discover. I had begun to regret doing so after I received a couple of confusing emails I received from Discover & being treated as a complete idiot by one rep when I called regarding clarification of my concerns regarding these email. Finally, PLT, Ms Mary from Discover Bank CS was able to answer my questions in no time flat & restored my peace of mind which is priceless! She not only restored my faith in the banking side of Discover but in mankind as well! She has turned Discover Bank’s previously earned F into an A+, gold star, smiley face! Kudos, Ms. Mary, for being an angel of mercy & my answer to prayer today!
Can't withdraw funds for 60 days.
Be aware that Discover will, not possibly, but will not let you withdraw funds that were deposited into your IRA Savings account for 61 days. This is currently their internal policy that has not previously been told to customers until recently but they are enforcing despite this fact not being previously disclosed in writing in their Deposit Account Agreement. As you can see below (1) they just put this in their Deposit Account Agreement that they claim won't be effective until April 19, 2025 but they are and have been actively enforcing without customer agreement. I opened my account several years ago so this should not have applied to my deposits since it was not specifically in the Deposit Account Agreement that was in effect when I opened the account. They continue to refer to a vague section of the existing Deposit Account Agreement and I was told by several agents "After reviewing what you have stated it is in our account agreement when opening the account. You can locate it on our website under forms and documents Page 18. The 60 day rule does apply to all distributions even IRA OSA and all new funds put into an IRA even if the account has been established for a long time. It applies to all new funds. This is a business decision made by Discover Bank." As you can see Discover has not even made this "policy" effective or known to their customers until a future date. Do not do any business with this bank. You have been warned.
(1)
Important Changes to the Discover® Deposit Account Agreement
Effective April 19, 2025, the following will be added to the Deposit Account Agreement:
Section 15 (f): Funds Availability (Holds), IRA Savings Accounts: Any deposit made to your
IRA Savings Account (for example, by check or ACH transfers initiated at Discover Bank)
may not be available for withdrawal until 60 days after the deposit date; except for required minimum distributions and revocations of IRA plan.
They don't honor their own sent checks
I asked discover bank to send out a check. Somehow I missed that it wouldn't be sent for 4 days, which is bad enough for this dumb company. Once the check was sent and received and then cashed, they decided not to honor it. Their own check. I honestly don't know if this is a scam for them to make more money on interest as they don't honor their own checks or just pure incompetence.
Either way, don't trust them with your money.
Discover bank is frequently hacked and does not back up their…
Discover bank does not back up their costumers at all. Do not trust them. My account was hacked from an online casino site that charged my card $99.99 repeatedly in a matter of just an hour. Any other bank would have seen that as suspicious activity and notified me but not Discover. They allowed the charges to go through without question. I disputed the charges and even supplied Discover with a police report but they keep marking the fraudulent charges as valid and are holding me liable. I have spoken with them over a dozen times but I get nowhere with them. Take your business elsewhere.
WORST BANK STAY AWAY
I had fraudulent charges on my Discover credit card, and the fraud department failed to properly communicate with me about providing evidence or any investigation details. The dispute was appealed, but despite having clear evidence—which they didn’t even bother to ask for—and even contacting the merchants as Discover themselves advised me to do, they still held me responsible and refused to help, reopen the claim, or offer any other solution.
I spoke with multiple investigators, each giving me conflicting instructions on what to do. When I followed their advice, they still claimed there was nothing they could do. Not only did they play games and provide misleading information, but their final response was basically, "Good luck figuring this out on your own."
I have never experienced such terrible customer service and lack of assistance from a bank. If you’re looking for a bank that values its customers and actually protects against fraud, stay far away from Discover.
I do not recommend Discover at all—avoid them if you want real fraud protection and competent customer support!
Discover IRAs Not Available For On-line-Sign-up
I attempted to purchase an IRA CD on Discover's web site that they say will take about 15 minutes and at the very last step, e-signing the web site froze and would not serve me the documents to e-sign. This is after putting all my banking and personal information in the Discover system and opening an account. I called Discover and the two people I spoke with were very helpful but the bottom line is it will take multiple phone calls on my part to cancel my account and go elsewhere. They now want me to download the documents that I was to e-sign and sign them, scan then, upload them and wait for them to be processed. I'm nearly 70 years old and the Discover web site said I could do all of this on line including e-sign. So now I want to go elsewhere and I can't open an account with confidence that Discover won't attempt to take my funds and fund this account with them that I no longer want. The on-line process was too difficult and I am also a retired IT specialist..... who spends hours on the computer every day. With all this said Discover was not able to deliver what they promised and that was/is a quick, easy on-line sign up with e-signing. To make things worse my money is now potentially tied up with them and I can't go elsewhere. The supervisor that I spoke with told me it can take up to a week for them to even cancel an account. Forgive me please but all I was trying to do was to become a customer..... and now I have multiple hours invested, there is more for me to do, my funds are tied up and I'm very sorry I ever considered Discover for a banking product.

Hello! Thank you for contacting Discover via our chat service! My name is Mary, and I am located in Ohio! It is a pleasure to be able to chat with you today! How may I help you?

Please allow me one moment to review!
• Btw, by "banks" I don't mean just banks. Any face-to-face location including a credit union that handles discover withdrawals would be fine.
• (As long as they don't require me to be a member).
• The discover website says: "Withdraw cash at a face-to-face location (i.e., at your local bank or credit union that accepts Discover) using your debit card."

I understand completely! The daily combined point-of-sale purchase limit is the lesser of $2,500 and the available balance in your account. Once your account has been open for 30 days, the daily combined point-of-sale purchase limit will increase to the lesser of $5,000 and the available balance in your account. The daily ATM withdrawal limit is $510. Please note I am unable to increase the daily ATM limit. To increase the POS limit, you will have to call us at 1-800-347-7000. Our 100% U.S.-based customer service team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please note that if you use an ATM not owned by Discover, there may be other limits set by that ATM operator. For security reasons, there may be limits on the number of ATM withdrawals using your debit card.
• I can work with the limit if I can find the POS locations for face-to-face. I'll just make withdrawals on different days. Can you help me with locations?

That is a great question! Please allow me just a moment to review!
• Since I'll have to do it more than one withdrawal, I'm interested in locations at or near my home and also my work.
My home zip is XXXXX and my work is XXXXX.

Thank you for your patience! Upon review, we do not offer that option, however, if another bank offers you a way to withdraw with the debit card, success is at the discretion of what the other bank allows and if they accept our cards to make POS charges on their end. Since this is not a feature we offer, I am unable to assist you in locating any potential Bank! I do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
• Wait, I just showed you what the help site says: "Withdraw cash at a face-to-face location (i.e., at your local bank or credit union that accepts Discover) using your debit card." So I signed up for Discover with the understanding I'd be able to withdraw in cash!
• So as far as I can tell from this chat, Discover provides no support on this, and who knows whether there is any bank anywhere in the tri-state area that does cash withdrawals?

Discover
I can definitely put in that feedback for you! I do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.
• Omg I can't believe that's all you can say. Is there a supervisor I can chat with?
Discover
Please allow me just a moment to see if there is a supervisor available!
Thank you for your patience! Upon review, my supervisor is currently in a meeting! Please give us a call at 1-800-347-7000 and ask to speak with a supervisor for further assistance!
• Ok. Unfortunately I'm going to have to post about this online. Thank you.

What a terrible bank off
I initially enjoyed using Discover as my checking account. It felt like a traditional bank, and it was widely accepted where other mobile-first options like Chime and CashApp often weren't. However, their claims of no overdraft or hidden fees proved misleading.
After a night of multiple withdrawals, I lost track of my balance, but so did Discover, apparently. They allowed six unauthorized transactions to go through, only to return them the following day. This created two major issues. First, they charged me multiple "returned item" fees that suspiciously matched the returned amounts – a clear red flag. Second, they selectively returned smaller transactions instead of a larger one from the same business day, suggesting they were prioritizing fee maximization.
These hidden fees and arbitrary return policies reminded me of the predatory overdraft practices of the past. This behavior needs to be investigated and regulated. I will never bank with Discover again. They would be a perfect acquisition target for Capital One, who seems eager to absorb them. For years, I believed Discover had the customer's best interests at heart, but I was sorely mistaken.
Then after a couple of days they closed my account sighting confidential reasons for closure. If I could give them 0 stars I would. Buyer beware!
Closed my account with no notice.
They closed my account with no notice. Which now drastically affected my credit score and caused other banks to lower my limit which again affected my credit score. Never pay anything late, but get punished for being responsible and not running up debt. What a lousy company policy and I called the customer service and was told there's nothing that can be done once in the count is closed. I will not be reopening an account with them or ever recommend anyone go with them. No other bank has ever done this to me.
Avoid Discover Bank !!!
My online account was disabled a week ago, and I was given no notice. I called Discover, was put on hold for a long while, I requested the rep to have a supervisor call me back. I never got called back. I called again, was transferred to another department and was disconnected. I sent an email to the CEO Michael Shepard, and got a reply from their Executive Office, but nothing was done. Overdraft protection on my account was incorrectly cancelled. When I called customer service ( three times !), supervisors were supposed to call me but never did. I have already filed a complaint with Banking Authorities.
I have been a Discover Bank customer for 12+ years.
I have been a Discover Bank customer for 12+ years. I am a 65 year old man. Statistics show that one in five in my age group have been a victim of a scam. I had NEVER wired transferred any money from this bank account until 7/2/24. I was entangled in a Crypto “pig butchering” scam. I proceeded to make the following bank wire transfers:
7/2/24 $10,000 Swan Bitcoin
7/8/24 $20,000 Crypto.com
7/11/24 $30,000
7/15/24 $20,000 Crypto.com
7/17/24 $23,000
7/23/24 $60,000
7/24/24 $134,000 Vietnam
Total $297,000 over 21 days
Plus Vanguard deposits of $24,990, $24,990, $28,813.97, $101,123.04, $50,229.93
Total Vanguard deposits $230,146.64
Plus 2 Discover CD’s cashed in early, $9,976.92 & $4,894.48
Total CD deposits $14,871.40
That is a total of $542,018.04 funds moved in and out over 3 weeks!!!!!
It would normally take me 3 years to have that much money go through my Discover Bank account that went through in 3 weeks! That is 1,095 days versus 21 days!
The wire transfers were authorized by me, but, the bank has an implied duty of ordinary care in an account agreement between the bank and the customer that “neither party can disclaim.” As a result, bank customers “may enforce the duty of ordinary care … through an action of breach of contract.” Discover Bank did not even question me about all of this extraordinary funds movement. I did recall the wire transfers to no avail. Discover did not look into the $113,000 in wire transfers sent to a person in Ligonier, PA. The Lakeland Police Department and the US Secret Service are investigating this matter.
There was zero empathy from Discover Bank.
Terible this bank doesn’t diserved not…
Terible this bank doesn’t diserved not even one star there are scam and and fraud and so spike full accusing me of this fraudulent account with i never open and denied me to open a new account
worst bank ever !!!
worst bank ever !!!! they tell you to add funds which will be available next day. your funds aren’t available they are actually up for review & then takes a whole week to be available in your account. i transferred money from one account to discover on oct 10th was told it was going to be in my account on the 11th. one the 11th it said it was under review & then received. i tried to make a purchase & was declined so i called discover & they told me i wouldn’t get my funds until the 17th. so it went from available the next day on the app to available in a week from customer service. TODAY is the 17th my account is STILL $0.00!!!!! i called & they told me it was reversed on the 16th & i won’t get my money until 2-3 business days . its thursday! so i have to wait until NEXT WEEK AGAIN TO GET MY FUNDS. i seriously hate this bank this is the worst one ive had my whole life !!! do not recommend at all
Discover Bank Is Great
Discover Bank is a great bank. Hear me out. Try establishing a relationship with Discover. Make sure you keep everything good, like no overdrafts etc. I have been with Discover for awhile, and the bank treats me like gold. No yelling or threats are necessary. Every person I spoke to has helped me every time. If there's any problem/misunderstanding, of any kind, talk to Discover. The bank will assist you. I believe some are in such a hurry, the great nuances of Discover escapes the perceptions. Try the bank from a fresh perspective. Thanks for listening. Good luck!
They make it as difficult as possible to fund a CD and don't honor initial rates
I've has the most horrendous experience trying to open a CD with Discover recently (which I am now stuck with for 9 months despite not getting what I was initially offered). I signed up with a 5.1% yield, and the ACH payment did not go through for some reason (I had the money in my bank, so it wasn't due to insufficient funds or anything like that). When I called to ask why it didn't go through and if I can try again, they said that they do not allow you to fund your CD with an ACH after the initial account opening, and the only options are to send a check or to wire the money (for which my bank charges a large fee). So I asked if there would be any issue with there being delays in sending the check, and they said "Don't worry, you have 45 days to fund the account." Of course, I immediately sent the check, but in that time, the interests rates dropped significantly (and I suppose it said this somewhere in the fine print, but I have acted immediately at every step since the account opening and did not realize that my rate wasn't being held).
Had they disclosed to me that the rate as dropping when I initially asked about there being any possible problem with the delay, I never would have sent the check. Now my money is tied up with them for 9 months (thank god not longer) unless I want to pay a penalty.
I've had CDs before with other banks and never had issues getting them funded. Now, I'm sure the rate changing thing is true for all banks if it's not funded right away, but I am frustrated that Discover (a) did not allow me to do another ACH after the initial ACH failure outside of my control, (b) did not notify me until 2 weeks later that my initial ACH did not go through (thankfully, I noticed sooner than this... Or perhaps not thankfully, since I regret refunding it), (c) did not make it clear to me that my initial rate would not be honored, even after I asked about possible issues with the delay of sending a check, and (d) will not close my account without a penalty after I have done everything requested as immediately as possible.
I suppose some would say this is a "read the fine print" problem, but my issue is more with the fact that I did everything I could to fund this account, and Discover did not do anything to make this process easier for me. If they would have allowed another ACH transfer immediately, there would have been no issue.
Know that it is not in their best interest to be transparent about the policies. And perhaps it's better to open a CD with the bank you already have your money in to avoid any transfer delays (which are NOT accounted for in the initial offer).
After my 9-month sentence, I'll be taking my money out of Discover and ceasing to use any of their other products.
My favorite bank, I recommend it to everyone
Pros:
100% US based customer service
Lots of ATM’s
Cons:
Online only, but not end of the world since I haven’t gone inside of a bank for 6 years.
Overall great bank to go with, I recommend it to all of my family and friends.
Decent interest, terrible if you travel
In short, interest rates are pretty good. Cash deposits have to be done via Walmart which limits you to $1000 a day. So if you get a big chunk of cash it's a pain.
Beware if you travel outside of the US. Previously I had no issues getting some cash out of my bank account with a Visa debit in Costa Rica. No dice with Discover. Thank God I had some friends with a Visa debit that fronted me some cash when we were there.
