Just a first-impression review on receiving a "La Scala" plain white silk opera scarf from Elizabetta. As ever, I shall revise it in time should the product disappoint after use.

But those first impressions on receipt and first wearing are very favourable. I chose the scarf to wear to the many musical events I'll be attending this autumn. After my customary search of many alternatives, I concluded this was:

- Fashioned from a finer and more lustrous silk than many, from the Lake Como production area that boasts a 600-year history of sericulture
- More generously proportioned than most, particularly in length (1.8m) though not so much in width (22cm vs up to 28cm)
- Of superior (tubular) construction to several similarly priced options, and more equivalent to luxury brands costing up to several times more
- Styled with a more refined short "eyelash" fringe, as opposed to those long theatrical tassels that can get into such a tangle round buttons, braces or each other.

The scarf was delivered swiftly, in an elegantly designed gift envelope of black card. I soon found the best way to wear it was the simplest - hung round the back of the neck at full length, with or without a single lengthwise fold, to show off to best advantage its beautiful sheen and drape.

Branding is mercifully subtle: a discreet little label sewn on one side, rather than a name printed prominently across the scarf, as with some luxury brands that should have better taste.

The only bad news? I bought the last one in stock!

However, there is one remaining "Verdi" opera scarf in white but with a more textured design, as well as many colourfully printed alternatives. And perhaps "La Scala" will be restocked in due course.

As someone who regularly purchases luxury accessories including Italian-made pieces, I decided to give Elizabetta a chance despite being unfamiliar with the brand. This turned out to be a disappointing decision I want to warn others about.

The most concerning aspect is their deceptive marketing practices. Their homepage boldly promises "Love it or your money back" and states "Your happiness is our priority... If for any reason, your purchase is not right for you, you can return or exchange it." However, this turns out to be misleading - the fine print on a linked page completely contradicts this unconditional guarantee.

When I attempted to return two scarves I was unhappy with, they refused the refund by claiming damage that didn't exist when I shipped them back. Their assessment included unprofessional hyperbole like claiming "a whole bottle of perfume was sprayed" on one scarf. They also claimed there was a "hole" that, from their own photo, appears to be simply displaced threads that could be fixed with a finger swipe.

Most concerning was their shifting story - only after multiple emails did they suddenly produce these specific damage claims, along with a claim of "pilling" on a supposedly high-quality scarf that had barely been handled.

While they emphasize being a "family-run Italian luxury brand" with 20 years of experience, their customer service practices fall well below contemporary luxury retail standards. True luxury brands understand that building customer trust requires honoring return policies and handling disputes professionally.

For reference, I've purchased scarves from Hermès, Ferragamo, and Louis Vuitton - all of whom stand behind their products and handle returns with the professionalism you expect at this price point. Elizabetta's practices seem designed to prevent returns despite their prominent "money back" guarantee.

My advice: Stick with established luxury brands that honor their promises and treat customers with respect. The slightly lower price point isn't worth the risk of dealing with their questionable business practices.
