Had the classic afternoon tea for two…but….
Had the classic afternoon tea for two at £23.50 each. Which we had booked in advance. Sandwiches good, as were the scones but not enough jam or cream for both. Cake seemed a bit on the dry side to us. The worst bit was the smallest tea pot ever ! We did get some extra hot water, but the last cup was almost see through.
T,o be fair , the other food I saw being served looked really good, staff very pleasant as well.
Been twice and both times awful
Been twice and both times awful. Was hoping the first visit was just bad luck but the second visit just as bad. Service very slow, had to keep asking for items forgotten from the order. Coffee luke warm and the cakes dry, tasted like they’d been sat there for days. Won’t be visiting again.
Slow service …
We ordered three soups and three teas The teas came and they were good however we had to wait nearly half an hour for our soup unfortunately we had to cancel el one as my sister had a train to catch the soup was ok but we will not be going nack
Poor service
Sat here 20 minutes and still not received our drinks
Very disappointing breakfast…
Very disappointing breakfast experience. They lost order, apparently due to intermittent internet problem. When breakfast did arrive it was mediocre to say the least. Coffee was good though.
Harriets - really bad
Visited Harriets at Meadowhall today. I had the Scotch Egg, which was awful - looked like it had been reheated to death, very dry and the egg had set and shrunken. I also had the sausage roll, which wasn't a sausage roll at all - just 2 slices of bland sausage meat wrapped in a thin soggy ribbon of what I think might have been pastry. For desert I had a piece of the most dry and flavourless chocolate and caramel cake. Over £25 for the worst food I have had in a long time.
Harriet’s Meadowhall Sheffield
I visited the new Harriet’s in Meadowhall, Sheffield. The decor was nice but the English breakfasts that my husband and I ordered left a lot to be desired. The scrambled eggs were rubbery and lumpy, the bacon was extremely greasy with oil pooled on each piece, the tomato looked grey and unappetising. Nothing tasted nice. Only one slice of toast each. The regular coffee was very small and was cold. Very disappointing, especially given the prices. I’m normally not picky about food and will eat most things but I left half of it after trying my best to eat it. I felt scammed. The ladies toilet had brown stains in it. The waitress had to be prompted to give us cutlery. Avoid.
Disappointed
The food isn't worth the prices they are charging we were very disappointed. However the staff were really nice and welcoming .
Charming and very special
We visited Harriet’s Tea Rooms in Bury St Edmunds on Tuesday and had such a lovely experience. The atmosphere was charming and relaxed, perfect for spending time together. The food and tea were delicious, beautifully presented, and really felt special.
A special mention to Kayleigh, who looked after us so warmly – her friendly and attentive service made our visit extra memorable. It’s always nice when you’re made to feel genuinely welcome, and she did just that.
I’d definitely recommend Harriet’s for anyone looking for a traditional tea room experience in Bury St Edmunds. My parents from Germany really enjoyed the whole experience and felt very British 🇬🇧
Disappointed by Lack of Compassion and Rude Treatment .
We visited Harriet’s Cafe & Tearooms in Bury St Edmunds on a weekday, arriving at 4:19 pm. Unfortunately, we were told by the manager that no orders could be taken after 4:15 pm and that we would need to leave.
I explained that my 95-year-old mother was tired and in need of refreshment, and politely asked if an exception could be made. Rather than showing understanding, the manager responded with a rigid explanation of policy that felt dismissive and unkind. The situation escalated into a heated exchange as I expressed our surprise and disappointment.
What shocked me most was the lack of empathy. A simple gesture—like offering a quick cup of tea—would have gone a long way. Instead, the manager’s tone was abrasive and, at times, felt intimidating. My mother was visibly upset by the encounter, which made the experience all the more distressing. I understand that policies exist for a reason, the way they’re enforced matters. A more thoughtful and respectful approach would have turned a frustrating moment into a positive one.
Gone downhill
Gone downhill over the years. My previous review seems to have gone. Suffice to say the Norwich and Bury St Edmunds tearooms are not good. Slow service, warm food, and my Welsh rarebit was uneatable and was sent back. A shame as they used to be so good
What a disappointing visit to this…
What a disappointing visit to this iconic tea rooms. Ordered avocado on toast and added the option underneath of Halloumi and honey to the order. What came out was avocado on toast minus tomato’s, onions and coriander, with halloumi and honey added to the top. When I questioned the missing items, I was told that if you order halloumi the toms, onions and coriander was removed. This was the basic meal so why? I was told I could pay for the additional items!! THEY ARE NOT ADDITIONAL ITEMS!!
It also stated on their menu ‘sorry no swaps, breakfast as described’
This and the many other very bad reviews is the very reason you will soon be out of business! Start thinking about your customers for a change!!
A treat gone wrong
Ordered afternoon tea delivery. Received confirmation but nothing else. No notification about delivery at all. Then a courier arrived who said 'grub' and left. When we opened the afternoon tea boxes we found: bland sandwiches, mostly egg; very, very miniature pastries which were ok; very dry scones and no clotted cream in any of the 3 boxes we ordered. Abysmal value and content. I sent an email of complaint but have not received a reply. The boxes were minus a key ingredient - the cream - so we did not even receive what we had paid (a lot) for. One star as the staff in shops friendly and helpful. What has happened to this previously very good company?
Lovely experience
Lovely experience, The atmosphere is the key for me It's was welcoming, and I can tell the staff was amazing to, I ordered a flat white, tasted fantastic to. Yes it's a bit on the pricey side. Worth a try
Went here yesterday as it’s a favourite…
Went here yesterday as it’s a favourite little spot, food is always nice and usually the young girls and guys serving are polite and helpful. We popped in at about 2pm for something to eat and there were 5-6 staff there, not very busy and we were sat in our seats and were left for 20 minutes or more and no one came to our table to take our order or even tell us that someone would be with us soon. We got up and left and had a word with the manager..
Having worked in top end retail for many years I know that one unhappy customer will tell 20 people about their bad experience and then each of those 20 will each tell another 20 people. So that could be 100’s of potential customers lost. Such a shame as it is a lovely place to eat and the food is good. Stepping up the customer service training will improve the experience so much better in so many ways.
Very disappointed 😢
Visited the Bury St Edmunds branch for my mother in law’s birthday. Looks beautiful on the surface but once inside it’s a little tatty. It was a very cold day and there was no heating on..it was colder inside than outside!
The girls serving were very polite and knowledgeable so I wouldn’t fault the service. However the food and tea was not what I would have expected. I had peppermint tea which was like water despite letting it brew. The teapots dribble when you pour so you end up with a wet table. The food was average at best.
I wouldn’t visit again. A shame because it’s a great location and has a lot of potential but needs work.
Harriets Tea Rooms
When we go to Norwich we always go into Harriets cafe tearooms for lunch.we havnt been for a while and i was quite dissapointed with the time it took ,we went upstairs it was cold .It took 15 mins for the drinks to turn up and about 20 for food staff were really nice.we had a all day breakfast the bacon was fatty with no taste and sausages had no taste and toast was cold .I think they must have a new supplier because it was very tasteless and we also asked for mustard dont do it.They used to bring up the mustard, sauces etc in small china pots now its silly plastic bottles such a shame used to love going in their wonder if its under new management
Turn around and find another cafe
From the outside the cafe looks beautiful. Then you walk in to see young staff walking around as though they are working against their will. Not a smile between them. I was handed the cutlery with a dirty napkin and the food didn’t improve things either. I had to swap sausages with my daughter because hers had been cremated, the toast was warm bread and the mushrooms just had zero flavour but enough oil to cook a further 4 fry ups. This was the Bury St Edmunds premises and definitely recommend almost all other cafes in town over this one.
Drinks didn’t come for nearly 10…
Drinks didn’t come for nearly 10 minutes no clean cups
Food came eggs not cooked correctly as asked for
New meal then took 15 minutes
Why one of us had to eat and then wait
This isn’t even the worst bit
The attitude of the manager was basically tuff trying to tell me what would be expectable
To be clear the customer who’s paying shouldn’t be made to feel in the wrong
After the foods incorrect on both occasions
This sort of behaviour is not acceptable
Shame as the setting is nice and shouldn’t be judged on bad staff and poor management
But it will not be tolerated
Really lovely atmosphere, staff and food
Really lovely atmosphere, great staff and fresh food. Something traditional and classic as opposed to the generic coffee chains
Well done Harriets
