Although the cottage is lovely and quite comfortable, with very basic kitchen stuff and one thin J cloth for cleaning up, the parking was not ideal at all for us - as your car will not be outside the house, but will be out of sight. We arrived to find the outside bins completely overflowing, so couldn’t enjoy the small but adequate space, because of the deluge of flies in this hot weather - the outside table was also grubby and had not been wiped over - making the whole outside area an unpleasant place to be. There’s no microwave - a must for travellers to help make a quick meal after a long day out. Instead we had to use the hob and very dirty oven - again not pleasant. Almost all of the flat surfaces in the house, as well as the blinds, were covered in dust, making us feel not expected or very welcome. There was also remains of dog biscuits on the living room floor and crumbs on the coffee table.

We had a very poor experience with a Host & Stay property a couple of years ago, but wanted to give them another try on this trip. We’ll not be doing that again.
Shame really, as a bit of basic housekeeping would have made all the difference.
So, so long H&S.

A great place to stay and enjoy Whitby. Perfect location minutes from the attractions and eating places. The all important parking for a couple of cars, a must. Beds were comfy and clean. The rest of the accomodation was a home from home. When we found out Arundal was available again we did not hesitate.

Very well kitted out with everything you need, close to town and a good sized parking space.

Very clean site & well maintained
Only complaint was hot tub could of been cleaned better ?? There was little stones & bits of dirt in the bottom ( a hot tub hoover would of been great)
But thats a miner fault & we still loved it & will go back 👍

Lovely stay - Clean and modern, fabulous apartment

This is a very nice property and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Everything worked well and we found it a very quiet and rural place to stay.

Returning Host and Stay customer. Accurate description of property and location. Easy booking. Lots of supporting messages about arriving, keys location, logistics etc.

Paid nearly £600 from 1pm Thursday which I paid £25 more to get inf or 1pm. Left a day early as not so impressed with the apartment with a couple of H&S concerns and utility washing machine unusable.
When entering the building- the hinge from the front door was hanging down with a long piece of jagged wood hanging in front of our eyes.
Was looking forward to using the balcony and look out over the sea but was covered in pigeon poo, so unusable.
Washing machine hook to close the door was not closing, so no use of the washing machine.
Dissapointed.
Left a day early.

Excellent quality accommodation, clean, modern, beautiful facilities in a great location, within easy walking distance to shops restaurants and harbour.

Clean, well kept and had all essentials that you needed for a long weekend away

The house was wonderful for us all, 11 adults, a baby and 2 dogs. Plenty of space for us and well appointed throughout. Nice little courtyard space outside with tables and benches. Would benefit from some nice comfortable garden chairs. Richmond is a lovely town and we enjoyed walks along the river and meals out.

Positives. House is a good size, parking space directly outside the house, close to Whitby town centre, pub a couple of minutes walk away dog friendly. Negatives. Cleanliness is not good at this property. Thick black mouldy grouting to tiles in bathroom where you have a shower or bath. Horrible shower curtain with mould marks on the bottom. Old food bits in the grooves of wooden dining table. Skirting boards filthy. Seat pad in bay window dirty, needs washing. Wee marks on the flags from previous dogs not washed away. Dirty shower curtain stuffed down the back of an outside chair. Just generally not thoroughly cleaned just skimmed around the entire house in our opinion . Kitchen Mugs in the kitchen all stained and marked inside. 1 tea towel for the duration, 2 teaspoons there. No hand towels supplied. No vacuuming done under the beds, full of dust and feathers from the bedding. Would not rebook this property due to the poor cleanliness of it. Could highlight more cleanliness issues but will stop here.

Accommodation in perfect location for our weekend activity. Very comfortable and had everything we needed.

Communication from start to finish has been excellent, accommodation was absolutely lovely everything that you need was available, once parked up you can walk into Whitby different ways, the area the accommodation is in was very peaceful, would definitely stay there again

Not the standard of service we were hoping for!
The Booking & Payment Nightmare:
We originally booked this property through Booking.com but Host and Stay contacted us demanding full payment directly to them, threatening to cancel our reservation if we did not comply. A massive systemic mix-up followed: we paid the full amount to Host and Stay but Booking.com officially cancelled the booking, and the apartment was thrown back onto the open market just one week before our trip. Trying to resolve this administrative disaster right before our stay was incredibly stressful and completely unacceptable.
The Reality of the Stay:
Because our weekend coincided with the local Golf Open competition, the price was heavily inflated. Given the premium rate we were forced to pay, the actual standard of the property did not match the price tag. While the flat had decent layout facilities, was comfortable, and didn't have bad smells, the absolute lack of basic guest essentials and maintenance was insulting.
The Major Issues:
Inadequate Essentials & Maintenance: Leaving just one toilet roll for four adults staying three nights is ridiculous. No tea at all just a few tea leaves in the bottom of the tea caddy. The washing up sponge wasn’t new. In addition the bathroom light flickered constantly throughout the entire stay.
Dirty Bedding & Furniture: When we stripped the beds at check-out, we discovered stained duvets and a pillowcase with visible signs of mould. There was also a prominent stain on the velvet seat on the stairs leading down to the basement.
Constant Noise: The flat is disrupted by a loud hallway boiler which would be disruptive in the winter and the heavy internal doors slam shut with force unless caught manually.

Host and Stay used aggressive payment policies that created total chaos, charged event-rate premium pricing, and failed to deliver basic property hygiene or adequate guest care. I’d think twice before booking with them!

The cabin was well maintained, well decorated and had everything we needed for a weekend away.

Great stay at Oliver's Den in Alnwick. Very quick response to messages via Booking.com and super helpful! Would definitely stay with Host & Stay again.

Booking and communication from the owners before we arrived was great. What a amazing, peaceful place to stay. The views were amazing. It was lovely to meet the owners, who did not invade on your privacy, but there on hand if needed. Homely, comfortable and I will be back.
