Nurse HERE
I am currently trying to enroll the the LVN to RN program and Labster has proven to be more than difficult , laggy and unpredictable. I need to complete these courses by a certain amount of time frame and Labster is going to be my downfall. I already paid the subscription. So I am stuck in this predicament and will probably not get to join my January class on time since there is a cut off date. All bc of Labster lagging and technical difficulties.

I love Labster
I love Labster! It is a great interactive tool to use for my Biology 101 and Anatomy students! Students use simulated, yet life-like lab tools to complete the labs in a real-life scenario setting.
Very Disappointed
Hello,
I teach high school chemistry and physics. Labster is a waste of time and has proven to be ineffective within the classroom. Yes, the lessons are nice and the simulations are engaging, but it doesn't work for the classroom environment. After spending countless class periods trying to wait for it to load, it crashes on students. On numerous occasions the simulation has kicked students out and froze during the simulation. It's gotten to the point that I don't even use the simulation because it's a waste of a class period. I've written emails to customer service on numerous occasions, and they haven't been able to resolve my issues. It's just a headache. I am busy at my job and having to write emails about the same issues becomes tiresome. Save yourself a headache and avoid it.
Thanks for the reply, but we played the simulation on our approved iPad's with the specified requirements, reliable internet connection and Labster app. The link you sent me doesn't fix the issues that we have had all school year.

Labster has lots of different…
Labster has lots of different experiments and ways to learn, but some people might find it a bit tricky to figure out how to use the buttons and menus at first.
A neat idea, but ineffective and littered with flaws
The theory covered is limited, so much so, many of the quiz questions are not covered by the theory outlined, leaving students to make haphazard guesses without thoroughly understanding the content.
Once a lab is complete, students cannot go back into the simulation to pull materials that are required for future Lab Reports - Students have to start all over again, sometimes having to complete an hour-long lab.
Once you move forward from a Dr. One (the narrator) slide, you cannot move back to re-review the information covered. Additionally, occasionally, the information presented by Dr. One is not included on the theory pages.
The system has many bugs, when the system is not registering an action by the student and freezes. After trying a different browser, reloading from a different point in the simulation, and then starting all over, the bug still existed. Even after speaking with their customer service, no solution was given.

Absolutely horrible customer service
Absolutely horrible customer service. they do not even have a number to contact for complaints; just for sales!
I have been hurrahed by this company for more than a year now. Hundredths of spam emails. i emailed them repeatedly to stop doing this but they just ignored and continued.
STAY AWAY!

A decent supplemental instructional tool for teaching/simulating biological concepts and techniques
This review focuses on Labster's biology simulations, which take a holistic approach to presenting scientific concepts and related lab techniques to students. This aspect of Labster is very useful for putting multiple concepts and techniques into a larger context, allowing students to apply what they're learning to a real-world situation. In a way, these simulations model inquiry-based, investigative activities.
One of the drawbacks of Labster is the lack of customization, which sometimes made it difficult to incorporate the simulations into our lesson plans. Some of the simulations used contained extraneous concepts/techniques that didn't align with our curriculum/learning objectives, and I feel that this occasionally detracted from more essential material. To alleviate this issue, we found it useful to either 1)limit or omit the amount of theory/background information presented to students (in our pre-lab powerpoints) to only what we would test them on, or 2)include brief introductions or summaries for this "new" material in a way that was appropriate to the course, while considering time constraints of the lab period. Occasionally, "new" material contained in some simulations was a welcome addition, and added some depth to our existing activities. However, this synergy with our existing curriculum was a rare occurrence, and I cannot think of a situation where I wouldn't prefer some customization options within Labster (though I realize this would be difficult to implement).
As for teaching effectiveness, there were situations where a simulation may have presented too much information/details in one area of a concept (e.g., the Light Reactions of photosynthesis) without presenting a commensurate amount of details in another relevant area (such as the Calvin Cycle) - for reference, I'm referring to the 'Electron Transport Chain' simulation. On the topic of this specific activity, I also felt that this simulation's walkthrough of the Light Reactions (shown as an animation within a thylakoid membrane) did not do enough to reinforce the inputs and/or output molecules of the major components of the Light Reactions; this is something we tested students on. Other simulations, such as those related to genetics, were a nice introduction to Mendelian inheritance, but did not cover many of the various modes of inheritance that we teach students; as a result, I forwent these simulations in favor of other activities.
In summary, Labster is a great tool for exposing students to a wide array of lab equipment/techniques (some of which they may not have access to at their institution) and integrating these methods to solve a real-world problem, while also teaching them scientific concepts. Its main weakness is its lack of customization, which in turn may affect the learning outcomes of any particular course. Having said this, I realize that Labster was never designed to be a complete replacement for face-to-face activities, and instead excels as a supplemental instructional tool.
Labster excellent for microbiology virtual lab
I teach Microbiology for the pre-nursing program at Webber International University. Being a new program at a campus that was known for its business focus, there were no laboratories on campus. Teaching micro was going to be tricky, since it is a lab heavy course. I discovered Labster, which offers virtual labs in many areas of biology, including microbiology. The labs are focused, engaging, introduce content, and go deep into the focused subject. Some labs are quick, such as how to do a gram stain, and others are longer, such as the basics of immunology. Every virtual lab includes quizzes, and offers guidance to the student user.
I used the labs to cover an objective (Immunology), to provide students a substitute for an actual microbiology lab (staining), and for critical thinking activities (identify an unknown specimen). For the 16 week course, I assign 18 labs, that the students enjoy completing from their dorm rooms! The data is available to me as the instructor. I can see what the students started, what they completed, quiz scores, and more.
Labster virtual labs are high quality learning tools, and well worth the price, which is labelled as the lab fee and charged to the students, who will not need to purchase equipment, or lab books, simply choose and assign the virtual labs. The only requirement is the student needs to have a computer or iPad.
The following is a list describing why I use Labster:
1. 20+ Virtual labs for microbiology, and many other topic areas
2. Easy to set up and use
3. Virtual labs delve deep into subject matter, ie. Immunology
4. Topics help meet course objectives
5. Virtual labs give students a "laboratory experience" when otherwise there would be no experience at all
6. Customer service is fast and effective
7. Instructor can simply observe student progress
Transformative Teaching Tool
Labster is a transformative teaching and learning tech tool that is absolutely essential for successful delivery of the brain based learning 5e Model of Instruction for Science courses. Labster has increased student engagement and achievement in my Advanced Placement Environmental Science as well as my other courses.
I love being able to do virtual labs…
I love being able to do virtual labs with students when I don't have the supplies or the facilities to do the actual experiments. It give students the knowledge of the material and allows it to be done from anywhere
Labster saved me time!
I started using the Labster platform about 1.5 years ago and am actually kicking myself for not doing so sooner. I teach several Biology courses online and we use the Labster platform for our "virtual labs". While an actual, in-person lab is ideal, it is always not possible. Labster was able to bridge the gap and allowed to to offer realistic, high-quality virtual labs for the topics that we covered in my course. The set-up was easy and they have a massive library of activities (all with instructor resources and answer keys) which have been a tremendous resource for my class. I will continue to use Labster and promote the ease in which I was able to incorporate into my curriculum.
As a professor
As a professor, I have loved using Labster. It has been a highly convenient way to add labs to my online classes. They are reliable and provide great virtual lab experiences that students enjoy. I also appreciate that they are continually adding more to what they offer.
Alternative Experiment Tool
Labster is an excellent tool. It provided activities for students to do experiments virtually, which allowed students to apply what they have learned in the class. On the other hand, this tool can also be use to enhance student's experience in the class. The tool is easy to use and all of the simulations are done in less than an hour, which allows students to do multiple attempts for better understanding in a given laboratory time.
Labster is a great product!
Labster is a great product to bring many different lab experiences into the classroom without the hassle. My students love the simulations and ask for more. Thank-you Labster!
Labster Review
I have used Labster in my classroom for 5 years. Each year the products, simulations, and course catelog gets better and better. It has been a wonderful addition to my classroom. I have students who like it because of the gaming aspect and some that like it because of the experiences we could not get in class. Student feedback says that Labster helps yearly on their EOC exams for Science. For me, that is worth it!

Labster checks in regularly with its users. They continue to upgrade and add new simulations. Labster does a good job of seeking input from users as well. I recommend giving it a try.
Labster is a great fit for our non-majors biology course
For our non-majors bio course, we have to divide our lab sections into two groups and stagger their schedules, so every week one group is doing an online lab, and the other group is doing an in-person lab in our only non-majors lab room. We replaced our cobbled-together online labs with Labster, in no small part for the convenience of not having to constantly search for free activities or fix broken links when content gets shifted or disappears.
Labster has a diversity of topics, with labs geared at different levels of experience. I had no trouble finding Labster simulations to complement and reinforce the material presented in the subsequent in-person labs. I no longer have to create or adjust ELAB quizzes due to changing/disappearing content. I utilize the built-in simulation questions and overall student performance to give students a grade on the simulations. I set my parameters in Labster's dashboard and have Labster transfer the student's score directly into our LMS grade book.
Overall the students have responded positively to using the Labster simulations. There is a slight learning curve the first time they do a simulation, but they have several avenues for seeking help, including during the simulation itself and through Labster's helpful support pages; I set up a page in our LMS that contains links to their student resources page, troubleshooting tips, and to their support center.
Enjoy using Labster with my students
I greatly enjoy the ability to use Labster with my online GOB Chemistry class. It allows students to expand their knowledge in chemistry, often with hands-on, really world application. I am grateful to have it as a teaching tool as I would not be able to replicate these labs myself. I do often worry about the wait time that it takes to load a lab, but for the most part, once it is loaded, there is not any trouble at all.
