1,000 Free Requests? Not in Practice
I can't recommend OpenRouter based on my experience.
The free tier (50 requests/day) worked surprisingly well, which encouraged me to top up my account with $10 to unlock the advertised 1,000 free requests per day. During the 24-hour refund window, everything worked smoothly.
However, once that period passed, the experience changed dramatically. The free models became unreliable, with frequent `429 Too Many Requests`, `400 Bad Request`, and other errors. Many requests were rate-limited or simply failed, making the "free" daily requests practically unusable.
The contrast between the experience before and after the refund period felt suspicious. I can't say whether this is intentional or just a coincidence, but as a customer, it left me feeling misled. Advertising 1,000 free requests per day doesn't mean much if the models are consistently unavailable or rate-limited to the point of being unusable.
If you're considering topping up solely for the increased free-request allowance, I'd recommend being cautious and evaluating whether the service remains reliable after the refund period ends.

Paid $55, received $0 in credits — three weeks of silence from support
I tried to top up my OpenRouter balance and kept hitting payment rejections. Instead of failing cleanly, the charges still went through on my end — three payments of $15 and one of $10, all successfully debited from my account. None of it ever showed up as credit in my OpenRouter balance.
I raised a support ticket twice. Got one reply saying "we are looking into it" — and then nothing. That was over a month ago. No resolution, no refund, no further communication.
For a platform that routes API payments and handles people's money, this is not acceptable. A billing failure is understandable; going silent on a $55 discrepancy for a month is not. I've used OpenRouter for a while and generally liked the product, but this experience has seriously shaken my trust in their support and billing reliability.
If you're relying on OpenRouter for anything business-critical, be aware that a payment issue can sit unresolved indefinitely.
Would not recommend until they fix their support responsiveness on billing issues.
Paid credits vanished and left with no response
I am extremely disappointed with OpenRouter’s platform stability and their non-existent customer support. On June 5th, 2026, I added $10.80 USD in credits to my account (Receipt #1505-6204 processed via Stripe). The credits appeared briefly and then completely vanished, leaving my dashboard balance at $0.00.
To be absolutely clear, I did not use or consume any paid API models during this brief window. This is far more than just a "visual or cosmetic bug" on the dashboard; the platform is completely unusable because every time I try to connect to the API, it throws a hard error stating that I have insufficient funds.
I immediately opened a support ticket on the very same day (Ticket #29105). After getting zero human response, I opened a second follow-up ticket on June 11th (Ticket #30143). It has now been over three weeks, and both tickets are completely frozen in an "Escalated" status assigned to a bot named 'Toney Bot', without a single human agent reaching out to fix a simple database synchronization issue.
This lack of attention has caused direct financial and reputational harm to my business, as I have clients on standby waiting for services that rely on these APIs. To make matters worse, their community channels are plagued with automated fake admin accounts trying to exploit users facing these billing issues.
Great product
Great product. Big shoutout to Chris Hughes, who had our back when we ran into a few hiccups. He jumped in quickly, was super responsive, and helped us get things sorted.
Garbage!!
Garbage, constant problems, API randomly stopping, or erroring with random shit like "Upstream idle timeout exceeded" they're total unreliable garbage and you should NEVER use them for serious work.
Aggressive gating of free tier, full of errors
They seem to intentionally make free tier models have a ton of errors and failures, in order to force you to use the paid ones. "Response contained no choices" "Temporarily rate limited upstream" and so on. Maybe one in 3 prompts works for the few crappy free models they do have. And to even be allowed to use the free models for more than 50 prompts a day (which for agentic loops is tiny), you have to already have put in $10 in credits. Very crappy platform, all the people who recommend it on youtube are for sure paid off by them. Edit: Went up by 1 star because they have a "Response Healing" plugin setting that aims to fix some of the issues with the lower tier models by fixing broken syntax when they output it, so they are taking active steps to fix their issues. Second edit: It doesn't do shit, i'm 99% convinced they intentionally make free tier models throw lots of errors to force you to use the paid ones, plain robbery. I hope the people who profit from this business will end up broke and homeless. I pray the piece of cardboard they'll be sleeping on will be blown away by the wind one night and they'll have to sleep on the concrete. If you want to use this service, i recommend you take the money you have allocated for it, and burn them. Heating your home by burning cash would be more efficient than using this.

Deleted 100% of my chats without warning or permission. I was a paying customer and at no point chose any setting to do this. I logged in one day and all my chats were gone. When I reached out to get support for the issue they responded with a fake letter from a bot. DO NOT USE.
They will steal your money
They will steal your money! 24hr refund policy that’s buried in fine print! Stay away from the crooks! I could not get the openrouter API to work, kept crashing and just was not reliable. Tried for 4 days. Went to get a refund on my 100 bucks and was told no due to their refund policy! I’m like who has a refund policy of 24hrs! They do becasue they know most people will have issues getting the services to work and with a 24hr refund policy that’s just built in revenue. Yes they keep your money after 365 days of it sitting in the account! Crooks!
Gute Erfahrung
Ich benutze den Service schon seit mindestens einem Jahr ab und zu. Bis jetzt lief immer alles glatt. Das Einrichten in Opencode oder Zed geht super leicht und die Rankings helfen auch die neuesten Modelle zu bestimmen. Ich finde auch sehr gut, dass Anbieter, die Prompts zum Lernen benutzen by default blockiert werden.
Das einzige, was ich nicht mag, ist, dass man oftmals Anbieter mit sehr geringer Kontextgröße hat im Mix für ein Modell.
Alles in allem ganz nett und gerade mein Ersatz für meine ausgelaufene GitHub Copilot subscription.
Worthless freaking company and website
Worthless freaking company and website, no support when you run into issues. At first I couldn't even give them money cause it said I needed to verify my email, which I did, then stuck in an endless LOOP. I ended up making a new account and giving them 5 bucks which never registered, still said 0.00. Then used 1 image tool that was suppose to be free and it wasn't. And my balance is -0.04. This company is a JOKE!
Greedy site greedy companies
Very bad customer service obvious bait and switch like how can you be so greedy like openrouter your squeezing the life out of us free users your taking away our free models and downgrading them why can't you just give us a free model and paid model of the Same flag ship model you greedy unresponsible company damn your greed and awful service I hate you from the deepest pits if my heart for ruining my roleplays with your stupid policies .
Shady business practices
I decided to refund €25 in open router credits because I’m running a small business and saving for our new baby arriving soon. They kept the €6 in VAT, and only refunded the principle amount. As far as I’m aware this is illegal. Very shady, avoid them.

It's cheaper, more reliable, and as much as I'd like to s**t on Vercel for some of their practices, at the very least, they won't just steal your money.
No free LLM is available
No free LLM is available, although a variety of models is listed. When trying a request, you will get a response like "LLM is temporarily rate-limited upstream. Please retry shortly, or add your own key to accumulate your rate limits."

I started using open router because I needed a fast and easy LLM API to use for the app I built as well as my coding assistant. Little did I know that this would be one of the biggest mistakes I've made in recent years.
Not only did they start rate limiting me like crazy, but the rate limits don't reset like you'd expect them to. The greedy company expect you to pay money to use free models, which as the name implies are supposed to be free. Otherwise they will make your API useless and you will continuously get a 429 error and no LLM response.
I do not suggest ANYONE USE THIS GARBAGE SITE.
Since they want to be greedy, I suggest we all just unanimously boycott them so they go out of business. You screw us, we screw you back.
MODEL ID MISMATCH
I HAVE A PROBLEM WHERE THEY KEEP ON CHANGING THE OPENROUTER ID MODEL NAMES, SO ANYTIME A USER TRIES TO PROMPT AI IT RETURNS AN ERROR, AND MY LOGS TELL ME THAT THAT IS AN INVALID ID MODEL. CAN THE ID model IDs just be standard, please

Account got hacked, support desk not responding urgent matter
Account got hacked. Email was changed without sending a verfication code E-Mail, before they changed the email to the hackers email. They just said "this wasnt you? contact support." Contacted support two times no response in an urgent matter... credit card information stored by them was used multiple times by the unauthorized party!!! Dont hope that support will help you, immediately go to your bank and lock your credit card... They wont help you... Take your business elsewhere They are not serious about holding good customer relations!!!
