AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Avoid this company at all costs.
My experience with CB Car Hire / Add Car Malta was completely unacceptable and involved multiple serious charging issues.
First, they took a €3,000 “security deposit” as an actual sale transaction, not a pre-authorisation. That is an extraordinary mistake for any car hire company to make. The car was returned on 4 April 2026, with no damage, yet they continued holding my money and only admitted later that they had processed it incorrectly.
Second, they also took additional fuel charges directly from my account, and fuel appears to have been charged twice. Instead of handling matters properly against the deposit they were already holding, they simply continued debiting my account. This created even more stress and confusion and took repeated emails before they even started to properly investigate it.
Third, I paid an out-of-hours return fee for a service that was not provided. When I returned the vehicle, no one was there. The office was locked, there was no visible staff member in the Add Car area, and there was no activity around us. I also have video evidence showing there was no staff presence at the time. They later tried to justify the fee by referring to airport rules and pre-registration, but this explanation holds no weight. This was a public car park with 24/7 access, so the suggestion that this somehow justified charging for an attended out-of-hours service that never actually took place is not credible. The vehicle was only checked in 2 hours and 53 minutes later, which says everything.
What makes this even worse is the amount of time and effort required to get clear answers. Instead of dealing with the issues properly from the start, I had to chase repeatedly, challenge contradictory explanations, and push them to even acknowledge obvious mistakes.
The main failures were:
€3,000 deposit wrongly taken as a sale
Additional fuel charges taken from my account
Fuel charged twice
Out-of-hours fee charged for a service not actually provided
Excuses that do not stand up to scrutiny
Poor communication and repeated delays
No meaningful goodwill or compensation despite major errors
This is not a small administrative slip. These are serious payment and service failures. I would strongly advise anyone renting from this company to check their card statements very carefully and think twice before booking.
