FIRING RANGE: CONE 5

Eclipse is a very dark brown mid-range stoneware clay body that fires black.. Designed to replace (and one-up) our old Midnight Black clay, it is formulated with lower manganese levels for user safety. Stronger and less likely to bloat than previous dark clays, it fires to 0% porosity to ensure strength, good glass development, and a body that can be put to the test. It has a rich, sophisticated color when unglazed, and offers a fantastic contrast for marbling or combining with lighter clays.
Eclipse includes manganese and small amounts of cobalt. We recommend washing your hands after working with this clay.
TIPS FOR BEST RESULTS WITH DARK CLAYS:
As most potters know, dark clay bodies are beautiful, but definitely can be finicky to work with. These are our top tips to ensure the most success in your pieces when working with a dark clay body!
Clays with heavy colorants need room for off-gassing. We recommend avoiding tightly packing your bisque fire for optimal results with our darker clays.
We recommend using a slow bisque schedule and a fast glaze setting while firing your pieces. This will allow for more off gassing during the bisque firing, and reduce the amount of heat work in the glaze firing.
We also recommend glaze firing to Cone 5 with a witness cone. The best and most reliable performance will be seen at Cone 5. I t may bloat at higher temps, see photo to the left, with examples fired at cone 04, cone 5 and cone 8.
Safety: Wash your hands well after use. If this clay producing dust during trimming of sanding please wear a mask or a well fitting respirator.
We like it for throwing, handbuilding, dinnerware, tile, sanitaryware, jiggering/jollying, and pressing. We hope you enjoy Eclipse!

This clay is very nice to throw with and fires to a warm dark color which looks particularly good, in my opinion, with Amaco Black Satin mid fire glaze.

This is a great clay to work. I like the matte black color after firing to cone 5. Slight bloating at cone 6. Also takes glazes well and highlights the subtle colors in glazes that break over ridges or carved areas.

Edit. Denny called me and explained a worker had been out with covid and didn’t review emails and he’s trying to catch up and is fixing the issue and sending out new clay for me. Once I receive it I will update the remaining part of this review as I do appreciate the correction being made I hade kind of thot it was odd for SPS to not respond or help. Now I know why. I did wait a few weeks before making a review tho and will update it again Original batch sent to me Was not mixed. Wasn’t easy to work n had tk knead extra and the final color after fired was not consistent because it was not mixed throughly and I could see yellow gold clay and some shade clays swirled in and not mixed. The center of the clay probably would have fired a dark tan Where as the outside of the block was a darn brown with rugged look Instead of black after Glaze fire it’s just dark brown Wether it’s just this batch or all of it Very disappointing cus I wanted to make an entire line of products off of this “eclipse” They didn’t respond to the issue Attached pic I will leave because I’m leaving an honest accurate detailed review Edit n update. He sent out a replacement and I do like the eclipse clay. Careful with certain glazes as it seems very prone to pinholes. Do some testing with your glazes before jumping into large batch But I do love the clay and will keep ordering it most likely as long as I solve the pin-holing issue

I haven’t fired this clay yet, but to me it has a lot of grog and is super strong compared to other clays I throw with. I’ve also marbled one bowl with it with white stoneware. Looking forward to trying more, as messy as it is!
