We booked our honeymoon with Southern Cross (through their partner in the Netherlands, Pangea Travel), and from beginning to end it’s been absolutely magical.

Everything has been organised to perfection, and Steve (our driver and guide) has been fantastic at taking care of us every step of the way. He’s without a doubt a true expert in his field - he didn’t use a map in the entire trip, clearly knowing every turn in every park by heart, and he could name every single species we saw and teach us how to identify very similar-looking ones (down to specific subspecies of starlings, which my bird-loving new husband was very happy about!).

It’s very much thanks to his knowledge and experience that we got to see the best sightings on the trip (elephants crossing right behind our jeep, a leopard walking straight towards us in the Mara), but his care and respect for the animals is what makes him truly stand out. He sees them all equally, and is clearly passionate about learning as much as he can about them.

While we saw other drivers going off road and harassing the animals, and heard them bending truths and exaggerating for the benefit of their passengers, Steve always took care to keep a respectful distance unless the animals came close to us of their own accord, and when answering our questions told us only facts or reasonable guesses based on things he has seen over the years.

Most of us are not used to spending hours in a car every day with a stranger, but Steve’s friendliness and professionalism made it feel easy. He made sure we never had to worry about anything, kept us on time (and waited patiently even when we consistently took longer at breakfast than we planned), gave us honest advice and recommendations, and was always flexible in working around our preferences. We felt completely safe at every point, including on the roads in Kenya - which is a testament to his excellent driving skills, as the roads can be more than a bit unpredictable. From the very first day, we just knew that we were in the best hands with him.

In terms of the itinerary we had for the week, we both thought it was absolutely perfect. Starting from Lake Naivasha and the sanctuary on Crescent Island (hugely recommended as a first stop), to the beauty and tranquility of Lake Nakuru, to the incomparable vastness and diversity of the Maasai Mara, and finally (after a stop in Nairobi) to the foothills of Kilimanjaro in Amboseli, where the enormous herds of elephants took our breath away.

Every lodge and camp we have stayed at has been unique and beautifully appointed, and the staff that we have met throughout the trip have been invariably friendly, helpful and charming. It’s hard to choose a favourite, but I think we loved the Serena Camp at Lake Elementeita the most, because of its beautiful rooms, gorgeous location on the lake, and the fact that it was really nice to have our meals in the same area as the guides (after that, we were a little sad not to see Steve at mealtimes!). It’s also the place that I’ve had the best massage of my life, so I need to also mention Rose, who introduced me to the wonders of hot stone massages and helped my tired ankles withstand the next few days of game drives.

The food has also been excellent throughout - the only problem was our inability to restrain ourselves and not eat everything! Even the buffet meals at the Great Rift Valley Lodge and the packed lunch we had in Maasai Mara were high quality and really tasty.

We’ve felt so lucky throughout the whole trip, but it’s clear that our “luck” has been mostly thanks to the brilliant organisation behind the scenes and thanks to Steve himself, who did so much to make this an absolutely unforgettable honeymoon - so now we just feel lucky to have had him as our guide. Thank you so much for everything Steve, and I hope we meet again!

We have just finished our 11 days safari with Southern Cross and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. For all the picking up, transfer, transport and dropping off, you could not fault them.
We have been to Tsavo East, Tsavo West, Amboseli and Masai Mara with our wonderful guide, Sammy, who is very knowledgeable, responsive, respectful and funny too. Whenever we were on the game drive, he was always on the look out to find different animals for us. We were able to encounter a lone lion walking on the road all by ourselves and even find the rhino on our last drive from Masai Mara.
The accommodations organized was fantastic with wonderful settings and lovely foods.
I would have no hesitation to recommend this company to all my family and friends.

onze safari begon in Nairobi, op het vliegveld werden we zoals afgesproken opgehaald en naar ons hotel gebracht. Volgende ochtend werden we opgewacht door onze gids Stanley, deze man heeft ons in 7 dagen heel veel laten zien en geleerd, leuke dagen gehad met hem voelde als familie! Complimenten voor zijn geduld, kennis en inzicht in de natuur, maar hij is ook vrolijk, respectvol en een goede chauffeur!

Excellent experience with Southern Cross Safaris - from pick up at the airport, transfer hotel & then onto Satao camp, we could not fault them. Our guide was Duncan & he was fabulous - incredibly informative, knowledgeable, responsive, respectful, humorous, kind and clearly loves his job.
He ensured that we saw everything possible, even racing to find a lioness which he heard about on the radio - the vision of her wandering down the road at sunset will stay with me forever!! Anything we asked & he didn’t know (which was rare & not necessarily about Tsavo!), he found out for us by the next morning. The accommodation at the camp was excellent & the staff could not have been more attentive. Animals all around the camp watering hole kept us on our toes but we were always kept safe by the guards. Five star experience - thank you, we loved it!!

We have just finished a Safari with Southern Cross. I should like to thank and congratulate them. The whole organisation of our trip was perfect - not one single hitch. Transfers were flawless, accommodation good to great - I mean, like hippos in the garden at night, and a baby zebra close to your room?
I should especially like to write of our experience with Sammy, our driver, guide and support. This man is gold! If I make a list of what I would hope to find in a Safari guide, Sammy ticks all the boxes.
Trustworthy Reliable Conscientious Kind Considerate A good sense of humour. Very good driver on and off the roads. Incredible knowledge of the parks, which he knows as the back of his hands. Great general knowledge over nature and animals. Determined to give us the best experience possible- and he gave us all the big five.
Sammy keeps himself in the background, but is always there when you need him.
He gave lots of information, never too much.
Whenever anything worth seeing came over the radio, Sammy was off - always knowing exactly where to be and how to place the car to give us the best view.
All in all he's a treasure, and Southern Cross has done an excellent job. Please look after Sammy well - he feels like family already!

This was my first Safari and everything was fantastic! The animals so close up and Satao camp had good food, the tents were lovely and open with animals free to roam. Our Driver Francis was friendly, knowledgeable and took really good care of us! An experience I won’t forget!!

All our expectations have been exceeded! It was a great experience and a dreamful and fantastic vacation.
If a safari again, then with South Cross Safari!

Wir bewerten hier eine 1,5 tägige Safari-Tour in das Satao Camp im Tsavo East National Park.
Unser Fahrer (Chris) holte uns pünktlich am Hotel ab.
Während der ca. 3-stündigen Fahrt zu Nationalpark erzählte er uns viel über die geplante Safari und was es auf dem Weg dahin zu sehen gab (z.B. Straßenbau).
Erwähnenswert ist sein gutes Deutsch.
Im Camp angekommen fand er die besten Stellen, um Tiere zu beobachten, gab uns Zeit alles zu fotografieren und gab viele weitere Infos zu den Tieren.
Wie sind begeistert, was wir in der kurzen Zeit alles sehen durften.

Southern Cross safaris went be on my expectations. Wesley, my driver was in Mombasa. His driving skills were exceptional considering the way people drive in the city. I was driven by him to Diani beach where we collected shells and swam, and I couldn’t have asked for anything more! Wesley was considerate to all my needs, and was very protective of me, and went along with all the activities that I wanted to do. Again, his driving skills were impecable! I highly recommend him for any activities that you may have in Mombasa. Thank you again Wesley you’re the best.

I recently travelled on a Ladies-only tour in Kenya. It was booked via a separate company, but Southern Cross Safaris provided the transport and drivers, and I could not praise them more highly. Steve and Sam, our drivers, made our trip. They were there for us from the early-morning starts to the end of the longest day, always kind, courteous, informative, patient, and above all, superlative drivers of the trusty 4WD vehicles which carried us safely from start to finish.

Based on this trip, I highly recommend Southern Cross Safaris. I would book direct with them in future, and hope that Steve and Sam would be there to share another adventure.

Sammy and Steve(now Stevo lol) drove our Australian Solo Ladies tour for 10 days through the Kenyan highlights, in a pop top safari vehicle, that was comfortable, and should be commended on their driving skills!
Their knowledge of all the locations visited, wildlife, the sharing of wildlife fun facts, sense of humour and relaying sensitivites of culture, was invaluable and appreciated. Ask for Sammy or Stevo, they are awesome drivers/guides. See you next time im there fellas

We just finished a 9 day safari holiday across Kenya. Coming from Australia we were a little concerned about a recent travel alert issued by the Australian government warning about safety in Kenya. Nothing could be further from what we experienced. We booked our safari through Bench Africa and it was fabulous. On day 1 we caught the train from Nairobi to Voi where our Southern Cross guide was waiting to pick us up. Our guides name was Freddie and he was fantastic. Over the 9 days he was great company, very knowledgeable and went out of his way to show us as much as he could. There were just 2 of us in an extended Toyota Landcruiser with a pop top. We visited Tsavo East and West, Amboseli, Massai Mara, Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru. Ticked off basically all the animals on our list. Accommodation was mostly in deluxe camping style tents with ensuites and the food was excellent. Had a fantastic time and would recommend it to anyone ... ask for Freddie, he's the best!

I was recommended from a local Kenyan friend Satao Camp. Not knowing where to begin I sent a message to Southern Cross Safaris via email because their name was on the camps website. That led me to many email conversations with Kelvin Gichia/tour consultant. He helped organize a wonderful 4 day Safari package and even helped us book train tickets from Nairobi to Voi. Highly recommend. BTW, we’re from the US not Kenya as stated.

We had an amazing safari in Kenya, Africa in December 2023. We booked through Jamba Safari Club in The Netherlands who uses Southern Cross Safaris on the ground. Our guide, Peter Kibe from Southern Cross Safaris was a great guide and did an outstanding job in locating the various animals in 3 different national parks! We managed to see just about every animal one can see and all of it was close up! Zebras, lions, leopards, rhinos, hippos, gazelles, wildebeests, giraffes, and much more! The accommodations in the 3 parks were great, the food was excellent and people were super nice. Our guide Peter picked us up on Dec 26 and dropped us at Nairobi airport on Jan 1 for our flight home. Super great service all around.

We booked our Safari with Jambo Safari Club, who use Southern Cross Safaris as their ground agent. We had a 17 day Safari and beach vacation. Our driver/guide Thomas really made the difference for us. He was an excellent, enthusiastic and patient guide who ensured that our Safari was truly unforgettable. We went to Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha and Amboseli. We were able to see a lot of wildlife, including the big 5. The lodges and camps were all excellent. Thomas made it possible for us to personalize our Safari to visit several places which were important to me because I grew up in Kenya. The transfer from Amboseli to Mombasa via Nairobi was well organized as was the transfer back from our hotel to the airport. We will certainly use this organization again!

We organised a Kenya safari trip through The Africa Specialists (UK) who used Southern Cross Safaris as their ground agent. From the moment we touched down in Nairobi (late…. the after effects of the air traffic control breakdown plus a passenger collapsing on the gangway on exiting meaning the rest of us having to stay on the plane) till the time we left, we could not have been dealt with in a more courteous, friendly and professional manner. Jama and Elliot met us and took us to our Nairobi hotel with Elliot taking us to Wilson airport and negotiating us through to the flight. After our visits to Masai and Amboseli, Simon picked us up for the rest of the trip: he was friendly, good fun, courteous and accommodating; always ready to stop for that ‘photo opportunity’ or that little brown bird disappearing into the undergrowth! All this as well as guiding us on plenty of game drives and excellent and memorable sightings of the big mammals. Thank you Simon
On our return to Nairobi, Jackson was equally friendly, taking us on an impromptu tour of Nairobi and even organising for us to be escorted through ‘Sky Fast track’ and the ‘chaos’ that is Nairobi departures. They certainly went above and beyond: thank you all.

Joshua was an extraordinary guide and driver. His knowledge of local flora and fauna made our trip all the more memorable and special. He was an exceptional driver and we, at all times, felt safe and secure. In support of his company, Joshua went over and above when it came to game drives. He knew when and where to go for us to experience wildlife and nature at its best. Highly recommended.

We booked a 9-day trip with Jambo (Netherlands based) with Southern Cross as local operator, so all contacts went through Jambo. The trip was wonderful, all was very well arranged, transfers were smooth, camps truly met or exceeded our expectations. The first four days we travelled with a car and driver of Southern Cross from Nairobi to the Naivasha-Nakuru area, including a full day gamedrive in Nakuru NP. This was a great experience, the driver was very professional, knowledgeable and respectful. We then transferred to Maasai Mara with gamedrives out of the local camp. Too bad the great migration was behind schedule this year, still we saw the great herds approaching the Kenyan border. Amazing!
