They Employ or Employed a Crooked Contractor…

UBuildIt and/or URemodelIt employs or employed a crooked homebuilder named Kent Carter. Carter built homes under the name KC Homes.

We hired Carter to build what we thought would be our “dream home”. Instead, he turned it into a nightmare.

Kent Carter lied to us, repeatedly, about the price of materials going up. Ultimately, he admitted to embezzling at least $150,000 of our construction funds. We suspect that the figure was much higher. His construction foreman said Carter had a gambling habit and told us that was probably where most of our stolen money went.

Even worse was the subpar quality of construction. Years after our home was “finished”, we still deal with problems caused by Carter’s poor workmanship, corner cutting and use of inferior materials.

One of the selling points regarding hiring Carter was that he had highly skilled subcontractors that had worked for him for many years. His construction manager said that these subs quit working for Carter because they were not getting paid. He hired replacement subs whose level of experience and quality of work were far inferior to what we were led to expect.

Frankly, knowing that this organization would employ someone who is not only a thief, but is willing to put his name on such poor-quality work—we would not hire them to build or remodel a doghouse for us.

Instead of using UBuildIt, hire a real builder

If you are thinking about going with UBuildit, you won’t get what Chris promises and he is misleading in his Facebook post. In his Facebook post for my house, he is saying that our house cost $620k and compares to a listing next door for $819k and what a great deal. The problem is, he isn’t including the land or the actual costs which is significantly higher. If you think you will save money going with UBuildit, think again. Use a custom builder. He will tell you he will get 3 bids from different companies for each trade. He doesn’t. In fact, I could never get him to give me any of the bids he used for our budget. This is probably because he pulled the numbers out of his ass. Don’t let him tell you not to get actual plans and specs with blueprints, that “his guy” can create them. No house should be built without blueprints. It’s basically building a house from a drawing on a piece of paper. And “his guy” is probably a 12 year old. I should have known when he messed up the foundation by telling the concrete contractor that the brick ledge was included in the dimensions when it wasn’t which completely screwed up the floor plan. The framing had to be modified which messed up the dimensions of every room and all the plumbing fixtures were in wrong place due to the initial foundation screw up. I can’t even count all the mistakes and issues. He bid 23 windows, we had 32. He bid 1 fireplace, we had 2. He grossly under bid all of the major components. He bid $2k for water, it costs $7700. He bid $45k for framing materials. Is was close to $60k. He ordered about 10 too many LVP headers which are very expensive and way too much lumber and said that the material company would come pick up and refund for the unused. That was bullshit. Patron stated they had a 15 day return policy so if Chris had done his job, we could have returned the material but they never called for them to come pick it up so there goes thousands of dollars down the drain. He bid $16k for the roof. It costs that much just for the material alone. The plan from the beginning was to have hardwood floors but all of the doors were framed too low. The headers had to be cut out to fit the interior doors and the exterior doors had to be cut down. The thresholds are too low so the doors drag on the floor. The plumbing materials used are as cheap as the come. They aren’t even mounted to the wall so when you try to turn the water off, the whole line moves. The patio ceiling had to be completely ripped out and started over from scratch. It was that bad! The roof decking was super wavy in multiple areas and had to be fixed. The flashing installed between the siding and stone is a joke and will have to be fixed so water doesn’t intrude. Walls are not square so Sheetrock, trim and cabinet contractors had to compensate as much as possible to try and fix. He ordered too much brick and mortar which are not returnable. We had an entire pallet of mortar and 2 1/2 pallets of brick left over. Every time I asked a few questions, I might get one answer if any. At one point, I had so many unanswered questions, I emailed them all and got smartass responses putting it back on me. His contract covers his ass so that he doesn’t have to do his job. They were supposed to have 25 inspections but before it was even dried in, he basically ghosted us. After we moved in, my husband noticed that there was a 2x4 installed directly in front and above the firebox. Can you say fire hazard? And yes, it was the one masonry company he referred. And then today, we had a plumber friend over and pointed out that the propane water heater wasn’t vented to the outside. The carbon monoxide was going straight into the garage. It literally could have killed us had he not noticed. I could go on and on. I posted this in a comment under my house on his Facebook page and he called and left me a very ugly message, removed my comments and blocked us from his Facebook page. I’m not the only one. After posting, I have been contacted by others with very similar stories. After I posted a review, I read some of the others and noticed they are from his employees and contractors. Bottom line…buyer beware!

Matt Miller - 100% better than last owner. Excellent.

Matt& Dani are really turning this UBuildIt franchise around. My last experience with Greg was a nightmare. We are now on a different project and so far, it couldn't be better. Matt has given me a reduction on management cost to make up for the bad experience. He is very detailed, organized, honest, prompt, always available, accurate on his numbers and working with me on getting the best estimates. This is a completely different and positive experience. Will post again as the project moves along (major addition to old house, 2 stories). Thanks much, Matt!

A Nightmare. Overpromised/Underdelivered

Worse transactional experience of my life. Indianapolis, Indiana. A home that was to take 10 months to build took over two years and then did not have hot nor cold running water when the UBuildIt team instructed us to "move in". Mistakes, ignorance, negligence, countless re-dos costing me lots of $$. It was a learning experience on my part, one that I could have easily skipped in this lifetime.

Horrid experience

What a horrid experience. I felt like I was negotiating for a seedy hotel room in a 3rd world country. Salesmen are commission hungry and know nothing about construction. Building advisors are lazy and know nothing about construction. Designers are unimaginative and know nothing about construction. Did I mention they have an army of negative reviews online for knowing nothing about construction? You'd be better of lighting your money and floor plans on fire.
