I was a family law client of Unified Lawyers. Following serious concerns about my billing, I ultimately had my legal costs independently assessed under the NSW Costs Assessment Scheme.

The independent Costs Assessor found that Unified Lawyers had not provided proper disclosure under the Legal Profession Uniform Law and set aside the firm's Costs Agreement.

What I found after going through the billing in detail concerned me even more.

After my Costs Assessment application and objections had been lodged, Unified Lawyers amended one of the disputed invoices. The amendment corrected rates that had been charged before their notified commencement date. It also completely reversed 2 time entries that I had already identified in my Costs Assessment objections as relating to work that I maintained had not occurred.

There were also problems before the Costs Assessment. After I started raising concerns about the billing and disclosure, I received an updated costs variation which stated that I was entitled to negotiate its terms. I did exactly that. I provided detailed proposed amendments and made it clear that I wanted the firm to continue representing me. My proposed amendments were not accepted.

Earlier in the same sequence of correspondence, I was also told that, for the firm to proceed with its proposals, I would need to withdraw the OLSC complaint I had made about the billing. I did not withdraw it.

Following the Costs Assessment, I then received a formal Letter of Demand that included an additional interest charge. I repeatedly asked the firm's Managing Director in writing to identify the legal basis, rate, calculation period and calculation supporting that demand. Those details were not provided in the responses I received. The interest was initially proposed to be waived as part of a settlement and was later omitted from a revised settlement figure.

That proposed settlement also required me to release claims, notices and complaints against the firm and agree to a non-disparagement condition. I declined those conditions.

I have since paid the amount certified as payable in full, under protest. So this review is not about refusing to pay my legal bill. It is about what I discovered when I started properly checking it.

Based on my documented experience, my advice to anyone considering this firm is simple: keep every email, keep every version of every invoice and costs disclosure, check every time entry and rate, and question anything that does not match your own records.

I wish I had done that from day 1.

I engaged Unified Lawyers for a family law matter in late 2024. I dealt with Matthew Tang and Alex Bourne. I would not use the firm again.

In my view the costs disclosure was structured in a way that is misleading in practice. Fees were set out in stages, which led me to budget on a stage basis — the stage I was in was disclosed at $4,400–$8,800. My total billed costs came to just over $16,000. I terminated the engagement at that point over what I considered excessive charging.

I took the bill to a NSW costs assessment. The assessor accepted that the estimates were confusing, and observed that it is not the client's job to collate bills to calculate their own running total. She nonetheless measured the bill against the overall matter estimate ($23,000–$38,500) rather than the stage figure I had been given.

That is the warning I'd pass on: staged figures are not caps, and a client who leaves mid-matter can still be assessed against the wider range.

I have separate concerns about the conduct of the retainer which I am raising with the appropriate regulatory bodies. I make no claim about the outcome of that process.

I have since represented myself and found it more effective. Do your research.

As a Father of two boys and a financial head of the family, when separation and grey divorce presented itself, I went into damage control trying to be proactive about any predicted collateral damage.
Assigned to my plight was an enthusiastic, rapport building, sharp dressed individual, James Lee, charged to me at $605/hr for consultation. Because of the potential severity of the situation, I was in dire need of a path out of perceived cascading destruction and instead of offering a path, every query was met with an obstacle. If deciding to go with his obscure expensive rhetoric, every one of my well intentioned moves would be exploited.
In sheer feeling of desperation Im trying to grapple to something that could be retained that I had built prior and during marriage so as to be able to provide a dignified existence as a role model to my boys.
A couple of years has now passed, my worst fears are realised. I retrospectively assess this demonic industry churning of men at the whim of women’s emotions.
How many DV deaths, suicides, parent displacements & alienation, homelessness and psychologically damaged individuals will it take until places like these actually offer a hand of help instead of the oblivion pit of hell??
