Do not assume their demand is valid—or that you must pay
Our experience with Visual Rights Group was deeply unimpressive.
Their correspondence appeared designed to create urgency and pressure recipients into paying substantial amounts without adequately establishing the legal or factual basis for those demands. A demand from a private claims company is not a court judgment, does not prove liability and does not automatically mean that any payment must be made.
We made no payment and do not accept that any payment was due.
Anyone contacted by Visual Rights Group should independently verify every aspect of the claim: the identity of the copyright owner, Visual Rights Group’s authority to act, the chain of ownership, the licensing history, the alleged usage and the basis upon which the amount demanded has been calculated. Do not simply assume that the claim is legitimate, proportionate or enforceable because it has been expressed in forceful legal language.
Their manner of operating also left us with serious questions about the company’s reputation, standing and credibility. We would strongly encourage others to research the organisation carefully, read accounts from other recipients and obtain independent advice before responding or considering any payment.
We conducted a comprehensive audit of our image library and removed any material associated with disputed or potentially questionable claims. Visual Rights Group has been directed not to contact us again about this or any other matter.
Based on our experience, we would not recommend this company.
