Went into buy a goldfish at animated Invercargill, as one of ours died after 10 years so have one left so was interrogated on why it died, was really inappropriate and very judgemental. Our family walked out in disgust. Will never go there again
I got the runaround for several weeks over their Petpoints rewards scheme. Despite spending thousands of dollars with them, I couldn't get any clear information about how and when to redeem Petpoints rewards. Customers Services told me I had free vouchers to use, then they said I didn't, then they said I did, then I was told in-store that I didn’t. I ended up paying full price for services in my local store that I had previously been told I had earned for free. It was quite embarrassing.
It also took multiple attempts to find out how to get the free delivery that their website said I should have, and most of the other benefits proclaimed on their website simply vanished into thin air. Information from Customer Services was repeatedly vague and inconsistent. Despite being told that I had reached platinum status, I was never able to redeem the full range of rewards advertised on their website.
It seems that they add vouchers for rewards to your account at undefined points in time (in my case, several months after I earned them), but incredibly, in most cases they don't even tell you that they’ve done it. The rewards then expire after a fairly short period of time. They also “issue” a code on your account for free online delivery when you reach gold or platinum status, but they don’t tell you what it is (or even that you’ve got it) unless you guess that you've got it and ask Customer Services for it.
It seems that they expect you to specifically ask in-store if you have any new rewards every time you visit, just on the off-chance that they’ve randomly issued you with something since your last visit. They don't volunteer the information, even when you are there purchasing something (they seem to have to hunt around for this information on their very slow computer system).
They seem to be masters of obfuscation. I had a terrible customer service experience, and in the end I just gave up in sheer frustration.
The Petpoints scheme is simply disingenuous. You spend a lot of money on the promise that you will earn some rewards, then those rewards are extremely difficult, or even seemingly impossible, to redeem.
I'll shop elsewhere in future. I hate companies that aren’t entirely up-front with their customers.

This company does not care about their customers at all. I was treated really rudely by a staff member, and had poor service from other staff as well. I contacted their customer service about it. They were rude and didn't care either. I was then told it had been passed on to management. I didn't hear back from anyone so followed it up again. Then never heard from anyone at all.
We had loved Animates for years and had been regular customers.
Never again.
Yet another hypocritical business that doesn't walk their talk.
Absolute rubbish.
Good quality but so over-priced. Great regular discounted sales on cat food and other supplies. Quick delivery too. Buy quickly as they always run out of some sale stock.
I recently had my dog groomed there.
It was supposed to be a full groom and did not even get to talk to the groomer prior to grooming but when I complained that they did not manage to do half the things they were supposed to, the customer service person had every excuse under the sun why they were unable to do the full groom. They had no trouble taking my $90.00 though.
Worst attitude I have come across in a long time.
New Plymouth store. The staff are always friendly and helpful. I have a couple of cats, who need flea and worm treatment regularly, and are willing to price match.
This animates store is just horrendous.
A simple purchase which should take a few minutes ALWAYS ends up being just under an hour. The computer system always seems to freeze. They over charged me again and I had to go back in and get a refund the manager was rude as usual. Also the treats I get, had expired this is the third time now, I’ve seen this in this store.
I stopped going into this store a yr or more ago because of the service, but I desperately needed some biscuits, and they are 2 mins away. It was a stormy day, I wasn’t feeling well and just raced to get biscuits. Should be simple enough, Nope! So sick of paying huge money for their products and getting the worst service!!
You can spend a few thousand a Yr and then you have to deal with this.

I bought a 55L of hay on line when I opened it I found it was full of prickles,I couldn’t get the hay out of the plastic bag all that hay was a waste of time.I contacted the on line complaints person and gave him all my details but it was never replaced,I am not happy at all as this hay is not cheap,I will never shop there again I was totally dissatisfied.
I would like to thank Sam from animates Blenheim. Answered the very politely as if she enjoys her work. Very helpful over the phone. Even wished me a good day. Lovely to see this service still exciting 😀
The service is really good and I liked the click and collect option during covid 19.
The staff's there are awesome, lots of supplies and goodies. However, the price is just up the roof. Most dog toys there are 20-30 dollars, which is not worth it. Found the same duck toy at kmart for 7 dollars, and the quality is the same.

Poor customer service. I've ordered prescription food for my dog. Usually, with other companies, it is overnight delivery. Using their chat link on the website I was told that it can take 1 to 2 days to get the order ready, then it can take up to 7 days to deliver. Just wondering if they should sell prescription food online with that kind of service? Very poor :-(
