The WORST experience
Bought in 2021 for my 2-bed flat, told it would be 'comparable' to other heating & cheapest elec. While looking into the system they did not send me any manuals, kit list, breakdowns of how the system works other than a quote & later a layout of the mats in simple plan format. No q.s about my flat, NO initial site visit BEFORE quoting, no heat loss calculation. Specified my flat via email, asking only for the plans of my flat. The kit came with ONE document with pictures of how to install the mats. Installed in April, tested fine, already warm outside so getting to temp. Sep, turned the heating on & it wasn’t struggling hard against the cold. Phoned & was told that the building structure needed to warm up, it would be 2 weeks before warmth. I waited, although if you buy a new heating system you should not have to be cold for 2 weeks every autumn! Weather plummeted, it got colder. Heating on all the time never getting above 17 degrees and meter £10+ a day. Told to feel both ends of the mat - were they warm? Yes. Galvin came to the flat for the first time, looked at the mats with the heat camera, they were heating. Response was that my flat didn’t have enough insulation, even though they had NOT asked me any relevant insulation questions. Mentioned our block was considering cavity wall insulation and he decided that this was the issue & once I got that everything would be fine, ( had mentioned in an email before purchase that cavity wall wasn’t filled!). Now, they would get a bigger transformer to replace one for one zone and I should heat the other rooms with oil radiators until my block got cavity wall insulation. This had happened to someone else, in one room, backing onto garage. Made a song & dance about how 'nice' they were to pay for this new transformer for the system they specified that wasn’t working. New transformer arrived, not the manufactured white ones, it looked a DIY prototype. Came with no health and safety instructions (since advised a legal requirement), nothing to say what it was. The casing was an industrial box oversized for the transformer inside, and 3 x bigger. Couldn't fit more in the space where they were, should our cavity wall not happen. Turned on & finally 20 degrees although it took HOURS. But crazy bills £504 for January to heat one zone (livingroom/kitchen), £438 in Feb. Worked for a while but in April I noticed a hairline crack appear in plaster. Turned the heating off for summer. Became clear that my neighbours did not want to get the cavity wall filled. Sep, turned the heating on again. A burn mark in the ceiling! Galvin and my builder came to the flat and they cut into the burn. Doing this revealed that my builder had plastered the mats in before skrim taping the plasterboards together and the big transformer heat was putting pressure on boards screwed into the ceiling but not taped enough together. My builder accepted fault for the boards not being held together well enough, but while this caused ONE mat to rip/burn, it was not responsible for the whole system not working. But Astectherm washed hands of any responsibility for under-specified expensive system. If bigger transformers are needed -have them already manufactured? If cavity walls are an issue -make sure people know that in advance? I have double glazing and double wall - my flat has average, not poor insulation. Why no documentation regarding the higher levels of insulation it needs to run? Maybe ok for new builds and fed by solar panels. But DO NOT RETROFIT this product as Astectherm doesnt know which buildings are suitable & how to advise.
Response:
Big transformer: My bills were £4-500 a month for 1 zone & no more space for 2x more XL tranformers. This is not ‘satisfaction’.
Certificate: You tested the system & found numbers you expected, written evidence in Whatsapp. It was working just not effective. Unfortunate certificate FROM ELECTRICIAN was misplaced in chaos of renovation, never received a certificate from YOU. Wow more lack of docs revealed!
Initial visit: was AFTER problems occurred. You are the only heating company that has not done an initial site visit BEFORE quoting. Dimplex have a system to specify their radiators. You don’t have one that works, and you don't know which buildings it will work in, so ‘supply only’ is really 'wait and see if it works' &if not tough, they’re plastered in
Every other heating system works in this & neighbours' flats. Except yours. You're distracting & not addressing the fact that you specified a heating system that was not strong enough regardless of trade work.
Advice for others:
Contacted Trading Standards who opened a case file on Astectherm. If you are experiencing the same issue, contact them, multiple complaints trigger an investigation.
