We were a longtime customer at Better, until we had quite a sexist incident occur.
According to Better, someone complained that my wife and 8 year old son were using the female changing rooms at the pool.
My son has been taking swimming lessons since he was a toddler, about 5 years now. He has now been at Better for a couple of those years without any concerns or complaints for his behaviour. Since the beginning, my wife and son changed in cubicles and strictly adhered to common sense and public etiquette when in the cubicles. Never left it sopping wet, or dirty or took hours to get themselves ready. My child wasn't a nuisance by running, screaming or kicking doors. He just came in already in his costume, used a closed shower and a closed cubicle to change back in his clothes after and left. Since we raise children and not heathens who don't understand the word no, he is very comfortable following rules. However, some people are just miserable and pathetic so according to Better staff they complained anyway. To appease the petulant adult, Better decided the best way to resolve this was to send my 8 year old to the male changing room. I work and it's just my wife (who obviously cannot follow my son into the male changing room).
Firstly, who would even complain, when we have never had an altercation or incident with any other pool goers?
Secindly, I just wonder if appeasing the Karens of today is worth the mental, emotional and frankly speaking physical safety of a child? No one can guarantee his physical safety when in any changing room, hence why he goes with his mother, where she takes responsibility for him. How much more dangerous is a male changing room where he is alone?
Let me also mention there is the family changing room, which is on the other side of the entire pool area and separated by a wall. Again, not very fire or safety friendly to have a wet child cross 60-70 metres to get to a changing room with no visibility to the pool and back round again. It's an accident waiting to happen, and honestly fingers waiting to be pointed from staff. My son isn't the only little boy in the female changing rooms.
When trying to get a straight answer from Better, they did what anyone who works in customer service does now days and gave us the runaround. Emails with links, phone calls from different people, who didn't know or understand the situation - so we had to explain it OVER and OVER again. Most people who would talk, took the 'it's not my problem approach'.
Honestly Better, you don't have to be a parent to understand that a child's safety is important. You just need neurons that fire once in a while.
Do better.
I have been attending Better for a long time and immediately noticed the strange faces the receptionists do at better in Morden leasure centre however at my age one tries to avoid confrontation and I always blamed on lack of training or the young age of the girls however yesterday they definitely crossed the line . While accompanying my child to start his usual swimming lesson a member of staff appoched saying " ah here you are from now on you need to move to another changing room as they have been complaints "
I was "officially " asked to change the gate of the swimming pool where I collect my 8 years old even he still swims in there ,, as someone according to the staff had made a complaint and our presence has offended someone's religious beliefs. I was told that I haven't done anything wrong nor me neither my child but still we need to move to another gate. At my questions as to what happened I was told to ' learn to have respect " by a rude young girl my daughter,s age . None of them were able to tell me as what kind of disrespect I had caused just by collecting my child and minding our own business?
Obviously they used the office power saying that as they are in charge we must do as you say and "its official. "
Its pointless to say that they made me feel second hand citizen even i am not . I am a mum if four a wife a home maker and a teacher by profession.
Its pointless to say that my child was present and kept saying what have we done wrong and obviously I didn't know the answer as I was not given any answer.
The teachers that teach my child swimming and have been doing it for a long time didn't know this new rule made on the spot for us. One of them kindly apologised but they had not got a clue either as to what we had done to be segregated or why we had to change our gate Had to ask another manager in the swimming pool aeria if I could go through the little children swimming pool to the older ones swimming pool as i know it was not allowed before and he as well didn't know this new rule or change but allowed me to collect my child .
All this brought to my mind some movies where in different times innocent people were asked to don't attend certain public aerias ....
I am on my 50 es . I have grown up four children ,,I mind my business and miticosly respect the rules both in changing rooms as in the commen aeria however I demand reasons when people try to step over my children mostly . I am polite but not stupid. My plea is train your staff to respect people's lives feelings and mostly respect every child as our children are precious . Use common sense . Children are important and we pay monthly for them to learn a skill without allowing anyone to make them feel unwanted non grata at only 8 years old especially if the child goes by the rules.
My question still is : what religious rules can my 8 years old break if he comes out of swimming pool has a shower with his swimming costume on and then goes and changes inside the cubicle while I wait outside the cubicle??
The staff told us that their cubicles are nearer to each other compared to other swimming pools. I find the answer not true as the cubicles are just fine.
It's concerning how people abuse other people without a good reason or explanation.misusing their office . Anyway had to collect my child entering through a gate where my child doesn't swiim anymore as he passed that stage walking through a swimming pool full of children swimming therefore through the staff and teachers, walking along 25 mettes of swimming pool aeria with the risk of slipping as well and if the little door that connects the two swimming pools is busy with the teachers giving the little children to each parent I will be stuck in another aeria meanwhile my child has to wait in the next swimming pool gate ? Why ?.
What our presence has to do with other religions believes ?
If we have some invisible stigma would not that be the case of offending other people in the next changing room believes as well ? I need a valid explanation and an apology as well

My son has been having swimming lessons at Better Centre since summer 2022, and we have had a very positive experience throughout. The teachers are always enthusiastic, patient, and kind, which has really helped build his confidence and enjoyment in the water. The facilities are clean and well maintained, creating a great environment for learning. We also feel the lessons offer excellent value for money considering the quality of teaching and facilities provided. Highly recommended!

Great Centre, great staff and really good facilities

So the facility is clean nice and well maintained with the centre being right outside my home however, it’s a leisure centre not a full gym so it’s rather small but the main con is the fact that I waited two years to turn 16 so that I can use free weights as part of their “policy” but as soon as I started lifting again one of the employees told me that I could use it and had to “upgrade” to a full membership due to being junior. She said it in quite a rude way and a full membership is like triple a junior memberships price.

I think it's very good value for money, although it's a pity I have to book to use the pool and exercise classes.

Really impressed with Morden Leisure Centre. I'm a new returner to the gym and have been impressed with the range of equipment and the cleanliness of the gym. Also a shout out to a super helpful staff member Adrienne on the front desk - she is really patient and polite to everyone. (I've had some issues with an account and she's been great at resolving things and never flustered). Nearly all the staff I've seen are super helpful and approachable.
I've not used the classes or pool but from a gym perspective think it is great value for money. Slight watch out on what time you attend (the junior gym hours can be very busy with younger people).
