The discovery flexicare plan is a scam

The discovery flexicare plan is a scam, do not take it because the discovery website says it covers unlimited GP consults and medications and when I went to a doctor last month and did bloods I was told it doesn't cover the blood tests and none of the medications on the 2 prescriptions I had and when I queried it with flexicare I was told that there's an approved list for medications and that's not stated in their website and they don't tell you this before taking this plan because they told me all prescribed medications are covered. Rather go for a recognised health plan like the standard Bank UNU plan which covers everything and it's cheaper!!!

Today I went to Sunninghill hospital…

Today I went to Sunninghill hospital emergency room. I have a severe allergie. I was told to call Flexicare and bring a authorisation number.
Flexicare told me"unless you are dying of a severe allergie, we can t help you. No one helped me ..neither th hospital nor Flexicare .😭😭😭

SCAMMERS AND MONEY GRABBING SCHEME

I signed up for Discovery Flexicare in early 2024 and cancelled the policy in February 2025. Despite receiving official written confirmation that the policy was withdrawn effective 28 February 2025, Discovery continued to debit my account for March, April, and May.

Each time I blocked or reversed the debit, they simply changed the reference number to bypass my bank’s stop order — a clear sign of deceptive and unethical billing practices.

I had to fight to get every cent back through my bank. Discovery ignored my cancellation request at first, delayed issuing the letter, and then tried to blame me for reversing payments on a policy that was already cancelled. It’s unacceptable.

After nearly a year of paying for this plan, I only used it once — and even then, I had to pay out of pocket due to shortfalls. The value is poor, the service is worse, and the admin team is clearly overwhelmed or just doesn’t care.

I’ve filed a complaint with the Ombudsman for Short-term Insurance and reported their debit tactics to my bank’s fraud division.

This was one of the most frustrating customer service experiences I’ve had. If you're considering Discovery Flexicare — don’t. There are far better, more transparent alternatives like Bloom.

Beware of Discovery Flexicare

Discovery Flexicare falls well short of standards set by Discovery proper. Their IT systems are not ready for commercial trading. They are unable to process electronic claims submitted by a leading pharmacy chain and leading pathology service providers. Their Call Centre staff lack training and are unable to resolve simple queries. Their standard response is “this will be escalated and I’ll call you back tomorrow” Of course no-one calls back.
A paper claim submitted on 23 Jan has still not been loaded for processing, despite almost daily calls and emails querying the delay.
I today lodged a complaint with the Ombudsman as they are denying their legal obligation to provide benefits for the treatment of a PMB condition.
It is extremely frustrating dealing with this dis functional and unprofessional company.

Flexiplan/Dishonesty

Please, please whatever you do, do not get Flexiplan, after 7 months, 7 installments of R967, I have just given up fighting with Discovery. Do yourself a favour and go read the reviews on Hello Peter. I did not even once use the insurance, the basic promises could not even be honored.

Pathetic service

Pathetic service
I am a new member who is dealing with a call centre Manager , Kim Lee Jones, who has offered me nothing short of pathetic service.
I started with vitality, with an additional gym membership a month ago, when I enquired about the product I was told to go to the gym I'd like to join and approach the Sales Manager, who then informed me that I need to pay a premium of R640. Then, 2 weeks down the line , Discovery made my card/App inactive, without any notification. When I called them, and spoke to the above manager, I was told that I needed to obtain a finance product in order to join vitality. (First time I was informed)
It's been 2 weeks and with my written e-mails to reinstate my card after I felt forced to open this banking account to reap the benefits of my membership, my gym card/App is still inactive.
Today, I put in another call to Vitality and specifically requested that Kim's Manager calls me back....I get Kim on the line and again talking to me like I'm an idiot and don't understand the way the world works.
I am very unhappy and feel like cancelling my membership if that is the service that is offered.

Flexicare does not cover what they claim to cover

I have had multiple negative experiences with Discovery Flexicare over the past year that have left me extremely disappointed and frustrated.

First Incident:
Last year, I went to a Flexicare-approved dentist for a routine checkup and cleaning. I brought along the pamphlet provided by Flexicare to confirm with the dentist that my visit would be covered in full. The dentist confirmed my coverage. However, a few weeks later, I was contacted and informed that Flexicare would not be paying for the visit. Fortunately, the dentist, feeling bad for my situation, covered the cost out of their own pocket, which was quite embarrassing for me.

Second Incident:
Earlier this year, I visited a Flexicare-approved doctor for a vaccine. Later that same day, I received a call stating that Flexicare does not cover vaccinations administered by doctors, only those given at pharmacies, a detail not mentioned in their pamphlets. Despite an extensive telephonic argument with a Flexicare representative who promised to follow up and keep me informed, I never heard back and had to pay for the vaccine myself.

Third Incident:
Two months ago, I fell ill and visited a GP. Flexicare claims their clients can visit GPs unlimited times without any charges. The doctor prescribed medication, which I filled at a Flexicare-approved pharmacy, believing it would be fully covered. To my dismay, Flexicare did not cover the medication at all, and I had to borrow money from friends to pay for it.

To top it all off, this morning, I received an email stating that Flexicare did not even cover the GP visit either and that I would have to pay for this myself too.

Paying for Flexicare each month has provided me with no coverage when I needed it most. I strongly suggest anyone considering Flexicare to save their time, money, and patience and look for alternative options.
