Review for Mitre 10 MEGA Hornby

Today I visited Kiwi’s favourite home and building merchant. If you guessed Mitre 10 MEGA, you got it right.

I was in a hurry and did not have time to walk around searching for what I needed, so I approached a staff member and asked for help. In some stores, you can spend half the day trying to find someone on the floor, slowly losing your patience and sometimes leaving empty-handed.

Not here.

The staff member greeted me with a smile and immediately knew where I could find what I was looking for. I could tell he was busy with other tasks, yet that did not stop him from making me feel welcome, valued, and important as a customer. That kind of service is not something you experience everywhere.

I also passed a couple of other team members, and each of them responded warmly and with a smile. It gave the whole store a friendly and positive atmosphere.

After finding my item, I went to pay using the account of the company I work for. Unfortunately, I discovered the account was on hold, most likely because our accountant was away on holiday. These situations can feel a little awkward, yet the young lady at the till handled it beautifully. She showed empathy, used a touch of humour, and quickly put me back in a good mood.

Thank you to the team at Mitre 10 MEGA Hornby for your excellent service and wonderful business culture. You clearly have a team that understands how to make customers feel respected and looked after.

I will definitely be back, and I am sure many more of us will be too.

went into Mitre10 Brougham street today…

went into Mitre10 Brougham street today with my puppy very tightly secured in the baby seat of the trolley ( tied in ) she was laying down just about a sleep!
While I was shopping I decided to pop into the Cafe for a full meal and drink and have it brought out to a table outside the Cafe where the playground is!
We weren't near the counter or food but as soon as I walked in the manager of the Cafe told me I cant bring my puppy into the Cafe she was very very rude so at this point I felt unwelcome into this Cafe to place and pay for a meal and drink so we left and went somewhere else !!! Mitre10 does accept pets into there shops but seems like there's different rules for the Cafe even though my puppy was very secured in the baby seat ( tied) of the trolley I personally won't be buying anything from the Cafe again I was so shocked I have told all my family and friends!!
Cafe was empty only one other person sitting down inside at the time I went in I had no one else with me who could watch my puppy outside the Cafe!!

Staff in the main shop are lovely and helpful and welcome your pets with cuddles and treats.

Knowing you got a item advertised on…

Knowing you got a item advertised on sale. Sale is for 7days which is a week,now you as a seller you MUST stock your items enough for it to last upto 7day sale,if not then what is the POINT OF SALE FOR ?. As a customer it's very frustrating to battle these kinds of on going issue with mitre 10. Everytime you want to buy something that is on sale they are OUT OF STOCK. Do you order only 5 items ?????? Change the buyer of your store esp manukau because your store buyer absolutely has no idea what he or she is upto. In future if you putting any product on sale you MUST have enough stock for sale.

Lawn Mower Sales and Assembly

On 10 April 2026, I went to Mitre 10, New Lynn, Auckland to seek help to assemble a LawnMaster brand line trimmer which I had bought from there. One of the employees named Mani who works in the lawn mowers section was most helpful. He was very approachable and agreed to help immediately after I spoke to him. He tried his best and finally managed to connect the two parts which I had struggled to connect. I wish to record my compliments for his friendly, courteous and helpful attitude.

Very disappointed

Very disappointed, was told they would beat price of same item, matched the product,product number and all other details (from same product sold at Bunnings) and was told because the shop code was different could not honor ??? Surely shop codes are unique to that store ??!!!

Mitre 10 Rotorua Appalling Customer Service

Mitre 10 Rotorua no customer service at all! Currently doing a bathroom renovation with our builder. Spent 40 minutes looking at toilets taps, basins 2 Asian workers just looked at us no hello, no asking if we needed any assistance. Maori Lady in kitchens right next door again no acknowledgement. We have decided to go to Plumbing World instead, and we will shop there and at Bunnings going forward. Absolutely crap service, staff look miserable too.

Morrinsville Mitre 10

Morrinsville Mitre 10 really gone down hill since it changed hands. Constantly items wanting to purchase comes up with Out of Stock on the webpage. Friends are saying the same thing.

No back or repair for workmate products

Took a hedge trimmer as it stopped working. Usual story no receipt. Any way took to repair shop and they said they cant get parts because Mitre 10 direct import from china. I went back and the manager basically said not my problem!!!!! I been those crooks are selling products that cant be repaired???Id give a zero star but not available. Dont buy their WORKMATE tools as they cant be repaired......

No delivery options = no sale

Love the store, some great items I wanted to buy. Made my choices and was ready to foot the bill of $2000+. No delivery option even for large items. Only collect. Who decided this was a good idea? Went to Bunnings, found similar items there, Paid my $2000 and surprisingly little extra for delivery. Sorry Mitre10. I wonder how much revenue they miss out on every year?

Zero customer care after online payment

I recently purchased an item from my local Mitre 10. I bought it online because I was unwell and couldn't go there myself.
They took 3 days to process my order. I received no reply whatsoever to the email I sent to enquire about the delay! It took a week to receive an item from across town. It takes the same time to receive from China and with far superior follow up customer service. Furthermore, the item I bought, Made in China, would have cost me half the price I paid at Mitre 10. Needless to say, I regret purchasing it at Mitre 10 and was left stunned by the total lack of customer care.

If I could give 0, I would

I am extremely disappointed with the service I received from Mitre 10 Mega New Lynn regarding my LawnMaster lawnmower warranty repair (Repair ID: 2373366). What I experienced was unacceptable, unprofessional, and honestly shocking for a brand that is supposed to be known for good customer service.

1. Repair lodged on 8th November: but staff claimed I dropped it off on the 12th
I handed the lawnmower over on 8 November 2025, yet when I called one week later, I was casually told it was “processed on the 12th.”
When I corrected them, the excuse was that the operator was a trainee who didn’t know what she was doing. This already showed how poorly the job was handled from the start.

2. Twice told it was marked HIGH PRIORITY: but it actually wasn’t
I called again the following week. The receptionist told me she had emailed the repair team because nobody was answering their phone, but she reassured me that my job was marked as a HIGH PRIORITY repair.
This was completely false.
When I called again on 22nd Nov, after being kept on hold for 15 minutes, I was told the repair will take 4-6 weeks with no such thing as a high-priority status.
So the “high-priority” story was clearly just something said to get me off the phone.

3. Ridiculous customer service behaviour
The person who handled my call on the 22nd was extremely unprofessional. She claimed she was a supervisor, but after 5 minutes of me explaining the issue, she suddenly said she would “get her manager.”
Two minutes later she returned saying someone from yesterday will call me back instead. No clarity, no follow-up, nothing.
It honestly felt like nobody wanted to take responsibility.

4. Staff who don’t understand the products they inspect
When I first brought the mower in, the person inspecting it panicked because there was a little fuel leakage. He acted like it was a life-threatening situation and completely overreacted, which instantly gave me the impression that I was dealing with someone who doesn’t understand lawnmowers at all.

5. A 1 year-old mower with a 5-year warranty: yet no urgency and no professionalism
This mower is only one year old, with a 5-year warranty, but the attitude and service I received made it feel like they were trying to push me away instead of helping.

6. Mitre 10 needs to fix the inconsistency between franchise branches
I recently learned that different Mitre 10 branches are operated by different franchise owners.
That explains why some branches (like Henderson) provide decent service, while New Lynn feels like a completely different experience and not in a good way.

Final Thoughts:::
This entire process has been frustrating, time wasting, and completely avoidable. New Lynn Mega seriously needs to improve its customer service standards, staff training, and communication.

Customers deserve honesty, follow up, and professionalism not excuses, delays, and being bounced around between people who don’t seem to know what’s going on.

I hope this review prompts someone within Mitre 10 to actually look into my repair and fix the bigger issue here: how customers are being treated at this branch.

No online prices and lack of staff

The first thing that is a pain is the waste of time website! There are more and more listed items with no prices - how am I to price check? May as well just give straight to Bunnings! My local M10 in Chch also seems to be lacking in staff numbers and those that can be found lacking in knowledge sadly

Poor Customer Service & Inflexible Policy

Visited Oct 27 to exchange a 2L paint tin for 10L size (unopened, unused). Intended to also purchase 30L additional paint (~$1,000 spend).

Offered bank statement + photo ID as proof of purchase. Staff refused and instructed me to drive back to Cromwell first.

Problem: NZ Consumer Protection guidance explicitly lists bank statements as acceptable proof. Yet Mitre 10's policy only accepts invoices.

This conflict between corporate policy and government guidance is the real issue.

Took my business to a competitor instead. For a national retailer, I expected better flexibility.

Te Awamutu Mitre 10 Great service

Called in to Te Awamutu Mitre 10.Needed help finding right door hinge,suitable masking tape and lighting.Each staff member was really helpful, patient and experienced. I was surprised at such good service. 5* from me.

Mitre 10 Henderson Megastore staff are so kind and welcoming. All staff members are so full of knowledge and approachable.

A big shout out to the staff who took me around to get my drilling tool set sorry I forgot your name. You are very kind person.
