Cruise Routes were the first, although not the only, travel company we contacted when we came up with the idea of a polar cruise. From the initial contact they were extremely helpful and clearly very knowledgeable about the type of holiday we wanted. We were given detailed options of what was available and, once booked, kept us well informed of pre-cruise requirements. They booked our travel to and from the cruise ship and were very helpful when it became necessary to make some changes due to external circumstances. We had a brilliant holiday that lived up to all expectations and I would have no hesitation in recommending Cruise Routes as a first class travel company.

We wanted to do an arctic cruise - but had little idea where to start.
We had a great range of options presented by Cruise Routes when we first discussed the trip and James Townsend was so helpful answering questions and providing information.
The booking process was really easy and both James and Jane Coy were really fantastic with sorting out all our additional hotels, flights and our kayaking excursion.
We had the most amazing trip to Svalbard. Everything was seamless. And the MyRoutes app is just fantastic for managing everything.

I had never been on a cruise before and really wanted a small ship to see the islands off Scotland from the sea. I had so many questions, from what to bring to how to pick a cabin to what to expect. Jane, from Cruise Routes/Polar Routes, was unbelievably helpful and among other things, helped me pick the perfect cabin for the trip, which I was delighted with. I will certainly use this company (and ask for Jane) if I go on another cruise to this part of the world.

The cruise itself was absolutely wonderful. The cabin was comfortable and had everything I needed (including enough hot water). The crew was friendly and ready to help at every point, and the expedition leaders were enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The ship's captain, consulting with the expedition chief, took us in to places that a less skilled captain could not have, in conditions that were often quite difficult (wind and waves). I was able to see so many of the sites I had been reading about for years.

My one complaint about the trip was that the very wide (probably man-sized) Muck boots we were issued for onshore expeditions just did not work for my skinny foot. Even with two insoles and two pairs of thick socks, my whole leg and foot rattled around with every step and gave me blisters, to the extent that I couldn't walk more than a few feet comfortably or without my socks sliding under my foot. If I had known this I would have brought my own perfectly good waterproof boots (from Aigle and Sorel if you want to know), which I can walk all day in. However, I made do with hiking boots with gaiters, and did all right as there were no bad water landings. It turned out to be a minor problem on this particular trip, and now I know. But I strongly suggest that the company source an alternative brand for people whose feet are narrow—one of the expedition guides had the same problem. It might spoil your trip if you had a lot of walking planned and had to wear the overly wide boots to get to land.

I enjoyed the food and drink on board. Personally I would have been happy with simpler meals and less elaborate dishes, but I have no complaints. I am mostly a vegetarian and there were always plenty of vegetarian options, and the breakfast spread was plentiful. The waiters and cooks seemed to really want us all to enjoy ourselves.

What a good experience this first cruise was in every way. Of course, now I want to go back again.

Excellent and informative assistance with holiday to Antarctica

A trip to Antarctica is a holiday of a lifetime and Polar Routes were fantastic in recommending just the perfect trip for me as well as organising the amazing add ons to the cruise.
