Unethical business practice

Based on my personal experience with Threadless as both a designer and customer, I've witnessed concerning unethical business practices. As a designer, I had work approved and used on greeting cards sold in Target stores. However, Threadless refused to pay me for my work and ignored my communications until I was forced to involve a third party to recover payment. Even then, the compensation I finally received was well below industry standards for nationwide retail distribution.
Recently as a customer, I ordered a t-shirt that was priced above average market rates. After three weeks, I discovered they hadn't even shipped the t-shirt. When I contacted customer service, they promised a refund, but failed to follow through until I had to contact them twice to actually receive it.
I attempted to address these concerns directly with founder Jake Nickell but received no response. Based on this pattern of behavior - refusing payment until forced, ignoring communications, taking money for products they don't ship, and failing to fulfill basic business obligations - I have serious ethical concerns about their business model. They appear to exploit their designers by withholding rightful payment, mislead customers by charging premium prices and sometimes not delivering products, and given this treatment of both designers and customers, I question whether the staff manufacturing their t-shirts are being fairly compensated(?).

We are equally sorry about the delay with your recent t-shirt order. Our printing partner experienced an unexpected cyberattack that disrupted operations and delayed shipments, including yours. We dropped the ball by not proactively communicating these delays to you, and we sincerely apologize. Initially, we issued your refund, but the bank unfortunately declined it, though we’re still unsure why, given that your account and card are active. Our payment processor’s limited details left us unable to explain the issue thoroughly, but we provided a screenshot in our recent email to keep you informed. We’ve now issued your full refund via PayPal to ensure it reaches you as quickly as possible.

In response to your concern about the treatment of employees in our supply chain, please know that we hold ethical standards in high regard and share your commitment to fair labor practices. Our print partners are affiliated with the Fair Labor Association, adhering to strict guidelines prohibiting involuntary or forced labor, child labor, and unsafe or unhealthy work conditions. Employees are respected and compensated fairly, compliant with local laws, and vendors we partner with promote equal opportunity free from discrimination or harassment.

We’re committed to improving our processes to reflect the respect and support our customers and designers deserve. We are grateful for your patience and openness in addressing these concerns and for allowing us this opportunity to respond.

Excellent Customer Service

I ordered some shirts for my son, and unfortunately they were a bit too tight around the tummy for him. I've ordered many shirts for myself from Threadless over the years, but this was the first time I had any issue with an order, so I didn't know what to expect.

What I received was AWESOME customer service from Amanda. 10 minutes after I emailed I had a response letting me know that shirts in the larger size would be sent out, and 3 minutes after that I got confirmation of a new order. I'm extremely impressed by the quick response, and providing better service than I was expecting. I've been dealing with custom service at a different company (trying to get them to send me a zipper), and that's been 4 phone calls, 5 emails, 8 months, and still no resolution.

Thank you Amanda! I was already a fan of the site, but I feel even better recommending it to friends now that I know how awesome your support is.

Update: Sizing, Purchase isses, Credit issues

Their sizing guide is inconsistent within the same categories for materials/shirt styles. The quality is not very good as the material is so thin and chintzy that it feels like an old shirt that has been sitting around in a warehouse aging from air and dust. Purchased well over $400 in shirts; had to request for four-five of them to be corrected. Only offered a credit or a reshipment and told information that counters the website. Follow up wasn't really prompt as I had to email two extra times to get a response over the course of a few days.

If you REALLY need one, only purchase if on a sale, but probably can find better quality somewhere else. Honestly, not the brand I purchased from some time ago.

Update: Oct 10.

Decided to go take the credit option (if the sizing was inconsistent & incorrect despite all other shirts of that same type fitting, I'll spin the wheel). Received a credit for $56.13USD when in fact, the total I paid was $78.4.

So I checked the site and the shirts are on 30% discount... Why would the company not offer the actual amount I paid? Wouldn't you assume that the person would check the account, see the total paid and go, "Yeah, credits for that"

Additionally, there is a charge for three shirts that I NEVER received a shipment order form for and am looking into.

Since we offer several different styles of tees, slight variations in fit, sizing, and length can occur depending on the fabric blend or manufacturing process. While we aim for consistency, tees may occasionally run a little bigger or smaller than others of the same size, typically within a standard industry variation of +/- 1 inch.

We never want you to feel stuck with something you don’t love. While we don't accept physical returns unless items are damaged or defective—since each item is printed on demand just for you—we are happy to send a different size you might prefer or issue a credit for a future purchase. There’s no need to bother shipping back the original items; feel free to keep, donate, or gift them!

We’re also sorry about the delay in responding to your follow-ups. We'll work on being more prompt in the future.

Quick response and replacement

In my order of several t-shirts, one of them was a bit too small. I contacted them and they responded very quickly and started the process of shipping the same shirt with a larger size, at no additional cost. I thought I would be returning the original one in the mail, but they said I could keep or donate it- this was a surprise and is really nice of them since it can be a hassle to send it back. I will find a good home for the original one, and appreciate their prompt reply on this!

Great returns/exchange service

I requested an exchange after a shirt I ordered was too long, and the store said they were sending me a new shirt, one size smaller, at no extra cost, suggesting I gift the too-long shirt to a friend. This was unexpected and much appreciated.

Great Returns Policy

I ordered a sweatshirt from the Autism Self-Advocacy Network (ASAN) but the sizing was not quite right. They quickly sent a new one and encouraged me to donate the previous order. This is incredibly kind and generous customer service and much-appreciated as, like many Autistic people, I struggle managing unexpected/unplanned tasks. Instead of having to manage a return, they made it easy. Thank you!

Small Business Owners Go Elsewhere!

I set up a shop for my small business on Threadless. I placed and order 17 days before I needed it and waited. A week later I get an email that my order was canceled, that somehow it was missed but no worries they redid the order (somehow added $6 to the total) and reprocessed it. Here I am now 3 days from when I need the items and only one seems to have shipped.

Had no luck with customer service

Had no luck with customer service: tried cancelling my order immediately after sending it. Got a "thank you we got your message" email. Customer service replied 4 days later, when the order had been already shipped with "oh sorry your message went to spam and what did you want? "

Even if cancelling hadn't been possible anyway, and/or their ticket processing system does send to spam messages from addresses they had corresponded with before, I'd prefer to get an answer from somebody who can, at least, read. "I want to cancel" seems to be quite a simple idea, receiving a "What kind of changes did you need to make to your order?" four days later as a reply is really frustrating.

Had a very good experience with threadless when DHL lost my shipment. They replaced the lost items at no extra cost. Great service and customer orientation. I will definitely oder with threadless again!

Absolute garbage quality

Absolute garbage quality. One wash and the shirt shrunk around the logo on it. It looks awful. The logo also wasn't laid right so some of the shirt color bled through the print.
Really disappointing.

It's like a large inkjet printer, but we print on blank garments instead of paper. Not the same Threadless quality I was expecting

Years ago I ordered a batch of shirts from threadless that still look great today, so I thought I’d order some new shirts from threadless in hopes that I’d get the same quality. Unfortunately the threadless quality from the past is no longer. The shirts that I ordered were sized wrong and the print on one shirt was printed far lower than shown on the photo. Customer service offered a refund, however upon receiving the refund it was only a partial refund, they refused to refund my shipping, so I’ve spent about 8 dollars to donate defective shirts unless I win my dispute. Don’t buy shirts from this company. Additionally in response to the threadless reply below, The shirts were indeed defective, both shirts were tagged as XL’s. One shirt measured 22’ and the other 23’ making them far too tight. And as mentioned before, the design was printed lower than shown on the webpage. I had to open a dispute with PayPal to get my full refund.

From the photo you sent, we confirmed that the design was printed as expected and the shirts were not defective. Items are only refundable if they are damaged or defective.

Regardless, we've refunded you for the cost of the items plus any sales tax. Additionally, as a one-time convenience, we refunded your shipping costs.

Threadless is taking advantage of its artists & customers

Four products got sold from my store, I got profit from one only. The other three mention zero profit "because they got on base price" because of some promotion or another.

In the meantime my friends who got shirts lately are complaining about the abhorrent quality. The designs peel off after a few washes. This is not how it used to be.

I will close my account and advice other artists to do the same. It's better to support your local print vendor and create high quality artifacts.

When a product is set at the base price, there are zero artist earnings, as outlined in our documentation. Not a glimpse of what they used to be.

I ordered from Threadless 10 years ago and was happy with the products. Some t-shirts didn’t have the best quality but the printing quality was out of this world. I ordered again recently and… was I in for a surprise. The quality of both the tshirts and printing is below zero. Colors are opaque, nothing like the design. Costumer service basically says this is just the way things are now. Not even a shadow of what this company used to be. So sad. Never ever ordering anything from them again.

Unfortunately, due to the one-off nature of DTG printing, there can be some inconsistencies with pretreatment application, placement, and print outcomes because each tee is printed in a separate run. We look into and record each complaint and keep track of error rates and other issues to ensure the quality of prints and designs. We have quality control checks in place, so seeing when and where it fails allows us to improve and make the next print even better, but we are always happy to help if something doesn't live up to expectations. All of our tees are Digitally printed the same way, some prints just hold up better than others.

A Creative Hub with Frustrating Approval Process

Threadless offers a unique concept and fosters a competitive, creative environment for artists. I particularly enjoy having my own shop there (maksdesigner.threadless)Their only drawback is the approval process for new accounts.

There's a bit of lack intransparency. I submitted a design over a week ago and haven't received any feedback or indication of how long it might take. Knowing the approval criteria and timeframe would be a huge improvement for artists.

While Threadless offers a great platform for artists, the unclear approval process creates some frustration. If they can address this issue, it would be a flawless artist-friendly platform.

Although each Artist Shop operates independently from the Threadless catalog, your Artist Shop designs might be chosen to be featured in the Threadless.com marketplace and search.

By opting into the Marketplace, you open the door to exciting opportunities. If any of your designs are selected, we may include your shop's products in the Threadless catalog, making them discoverable in search and potentially increasing your visibility and sales.

Remember, choosing to be part of the Marketplace does not guarantee that your designs will be included in the Threadless catalog. Inclusion in the Threadless marketplace and search depends on various factors such as design quality, commercial viability for the Threadless market, sales and activity in the Marketplace and Artist Shop, product tagging, and search relevancy. We strongly support human-made artwork, and licensed IPs or AI images may affect marketplace availability as AI images will not be curated in our Marketplace.

I actually joined as an artist

I actually joined as an artist, I finally created a portfolio I was excited to list, designs I KNOW are good because I have ran tests on them with my clients before I even began my POD adventure. I could print myself, I have the equipment, just not the time anymore so I was really thrilled to find Threadless. Especially since they claim new artists have the same opportunities as their few select artists they seem to be keen on. But I have learned very quickly this is not the case. I have entered a few of their contests and I know one of my designs had more votes that some of their chosen winners, so I call their voting system a joke because it is. Recently I had three designs shot down because they claimed I made them with AI but I am a graphic designer and I take pride in the fact I DO NOT use AI and I refuse to. This company makes artists feel welcome but unless we sell anime inspired junk we have zero chances to actually become profitable. I truly believe this company has a very select few artists they like (cuz its about what they like not the customers) and only those artists stand a chance. So if you are an artist hoping to be taken seriously by this site, well good luck. Reality is you need to find a way t get the employees of Threadless to notice you and after learning things I have learned, they only pick their friends. I have someone on the inside who has filled the rest in for me, so if I could give zero stars I absolutely would. And if the company actually cares to read this, heed my advice, you're not competition to sites like Redbubble because you choose to feature the same exact crap over and over, for a POD site you fit one niche, a niche that is honestly losing steam, maybe if you gave new designs an actual chance you could become true competition for the larger POD sites and you could make your artists happy. As a matter of fact I am willing to pay a subscription fee if it helps you weed out the artists flooding your site with AI junk. I am steps away from creating my own POD site where I can take new artists just as seriously as I had hoped you'd take me. Oh, another issue, if I or my customers search my products they cannot find them, an issue I have read many others have. How can we prove we can get sales if no one can find our work?! SMFH, yu could have something great but not if you stay on this same path.

The more your shop gets crawled, indexed, and gains visitors, the higher the likelihood of appearing in search results. If your shop is new or doesn’t have much activity, your designs may not show up immediately.
It's essential to note that regardless of search results within the marketplace, your Artist Shop designs can always be found via your unique Artist Shop URL.

We aim to balance showcasing popular designs while providing a platform for emerging artists. This way, we cater to various tastes within our vibrant community.

Contest Voting System:
We appreciate your participation in our contests. While the voting system does play a part, winning designs are selected based on various factors, including score, creativity, originality, and design concept. No specific vote count is required, but higher scores indicate better placement.

Regarding concerns about AI usage, we take such claims seriously and continuously work to refine our review processes to ensure fairness.
