I've been signed up with TutorExtra for several years and have got a few clients over the years from them. They do require tutors to be subscribers in order to reply to enquiries, which is a bit annoying as some other sites require the students to pay the finders fee instead. However, they offer free course advertising for subscribers. Recently, I have got a couple of decent enquiries that led to students. One technical issue is that the system doesn't always alert you to new messages in a timely manner. I recently missed out on a student because I only got the notification the day after they sent the message and they'd already found someone else. That's the main thing that could be improved in my experience.

I've been a listed tutor with TutorExtra for several years now and very pleased with their service. Whilst I may only get 3 or 4 new students per academic year, I feel the fee I pay them is good value. They have been very quick to remove any suspicious or scam messages, making me feel confident that the team monitors the platform rather than just taking subscriptions like some other agencies do...

The team have been responsive and supportive whilst setting up my profile. They also respond quickly to messages and queries.

Now looking forward to getting some new students.

UPDATE: They have made some changes to their system, following my complaint. Subscribed tutors will now be able to tell whether a message they receive was sent to them directly by a student, or whether it was a duplicate of a message sent by the student to a different tutor. This is a big improvement on before, and I appreciate their steps they've taken to rectify the situation.

They use a very misleading business practice where, by default, a message sent by a potential client to a tutor, will also be sent to multiple other tutors. The other tutors are given no indication that they were not the primary recipient of the message. Tutors are required to pay a subscription fee in order to reply, but are then frequently surprised when they get no response from the client who appeared to have messaged them. You can see this pattern in the other reviews on here, and you can see how TutorExtra replied to those reviews and didn't mention the underlying cause.

In the approx 3 years I've been a subscriber, I had 33 enquiries but only 3 of these turned into clients. This is a much worse ratio than other tutoring websites, and when I messaged them a while back asking why the ratio was so bad, their suggestion was to tweak my profile. Again, no mention of the underlying issue described above.

Their system of messaging additional tutors sometimes even ends of mailing tutors who are totally inappropriate for the job. I received a message from someone looking for a singing tutor (I tutor computer science), and another message from someone who was looking for a tutor who charged a third of what I charge.

After I realised how their system works and raising it with them, they have given me a refund of the current period of my subscription fee (although not for previous years), and they say they reviewing how to communicate the way the system works. Even if they do communicate this effectively to tutors, it feels like the site will remain a poor option for many tutors. I get far more clients from other sites, both in terms of raw numbers and enquiries to client conversions.

Company helped me a lot. Got a fair few clients from Tutor Extra. It is really good value for money.

I was listed here for quite some time and received countless so-called “enquiries.” I responded to every single one — through text, email, and WhatsApp — and not a single parent ever bothered to reply. Not one. I also paid for a subscription, so this so-called “service” isn’t free at all. It’s hard to believe any of these enquiries were even genuine. This platform has been a complete waste of time and money — utterly useless.

I have now deleted my profile from this website. I have been listed for quite some time and have had numerous enquiries. I have responded to every single one of them. Often via text, email and WhatsApp. Not a single parent responded. Not one! I find it difficult to believe that the enquiries are genuine. Total waste of time.

Very difficult to obtain clients from this website, customer service was relatively poor, cancellations and subscriptions are not structured in the best of ways. Would have hoped the process of becoming a member and receiving inquiries would have been more smooth sailing as the majority of inquiries I received were from clients who did not wish to pursue the possibility of tutoring any further. Whereas I have not had issues like this using any other websites for tutoring.

I signed up to be a tutor, only to afterwards be told how high the fee was going to be and that there even was a fee. That's annoying but I guess I should have investigated better. However, now I cannot remove my profile without paying the fee. Which means that my profile and face are being used to attract new users into joining even though my services aren't available. That I consider a scam. I have never tutored via this site, yet I receive messages all the time from people who want a tutor. I can't even message them back and say that I'm not available.

Siobhán has helped our daughter with triple Science GCSE tutoring. Her grades have improved significantly and she has a more solid understanding of the subjects now thanks to Siobhán. We would highly recommend Siobhán as her support has enabled Izzy to grow in confidence.

I've had a great experience using TutorExtra, and it has been a valuable platform for me. Impressive customer service. I didn't find the website entirely intuitive when signing up as a tutor and was not initially happy but Lara has been in touch several times, determined to improve my experience.

I've been on only a month so I can't speak to whether it ultimately works as a model but we'll see.

Sadly this has turned out to be a complete waste of money. Paying up front to avoid commission on each lesson is a great idea if any lessons get booked. I got around 10 enquiries over the 9 months, which is woeful. I couldn't do much about it as this website does not allow you to be proactive and contact tutees. Another website I use delivers on new student to me for about every 30-40 messages I send to prospective students, which shows that it's a numbers game.

The customer service was really, really good, TE were VERY keen to get a good review from me and upgraded me to the highest level in return for a better review but if the highest level doesn't get me students, I won't be subscribing again. No evidence that it would pay off.

The best thing about this company is the business model. It offers simply an introduction site and nothing else.

Other tutor agencies charge a commission per every lesson for unwanted add-ons (Tutorful deduct a very unattractive 37%!).

That means hard working tutors make a better living wage than with other tutor companies.

For a fixed price subscription, the tutor can make of the subscription fee what they want.

Whilst other companies justify deduction of fee on a per lesson basis by offering a whiteboard and handling payments, I am happier to control and manage that myself. I don't want to pay a company to do that (especially when they charge fees which are not worth 37% deduction).

I have control as I don't have to use the tutor company's T&Cs when dealing with my students; I'm able to use my own.

I didn't enjoy working at other tutor companies where payments were made after the lesson was complete on a weekly basis.

This meant checking whether you'd been paid, sometimes long after the lesson was complete so was wasted time reconciling against a tutor company's online calendar and their payment calculations.

I experienced fraudulent withholding of my payment by another tutor company (Tutor Hunt) which meant wasting time raising a claim against them (and winning!). Absolutely none of that happens with Tutor Extra.

Tutor Extra don't tie you to one particular agency or their particular whiteboard. I use my own subscription-paid, 5* whiteboard which is superior to the ones offered by others anyway.

I also get support by talking to a real life human being- Lara - who helped me when I first joined the platform. Lara works really hard providing personalised responses.

Lara also posts regularly on social media sites to attract traffic to the site which is good overall for us tutors.

Advertises as free for tutors, but requires payment to reply to messages

I have had several pupils who found me through Tutor Extra, and I have always had a good, helpful and a professional customer support. I would much recommend them.

The company has a straight forward and honest business model - the advertising fee for a premium membership ends up being much, much lower than for the sites that take commission after a decent number of lessons.

Within a week or so of being properly setup on there, I had two enquiries in the first week of July which is normally a quiet period.

I am happy that I decided to advertise my services with TutorExtra UK. I believe they have an excellent model as a tuition Website for tutors and for people searching for a tutor. I have always been impressed by the speed and rigour with which admin has responded to my questions and I have had a healthy, positive and beneficial correspondence, ever since I posted my service 4 years ago. I wholeheartedly recommend them.
