We tried to change our dates from September to an available date in December 26 because we have had a foster baby who is seriously unwell and has been in Hospital for 10 weeks. This company refused the calendar available swap. The owner sent me an email to say he had mortgage and bills to pay. There was no empathy whatsoever. Yorkshire Coastal Cottages and owner of the Lodge in Ingleby Greenhow are utterly heartless and morally corrupt.

Where do I begin? Disgusting piss-stained mattress, faulty lock on front door (took us an hour to get in one evening), freezer compartment in refrigerator totally blocked with ice, curtain collapsed, plates chipped, one of the rooms very dusty (triggered my wife's asthma). Left very early. Ruined holiday. Dismissive, disinterested response from Yorkshire Coastal Cottages / Sykes Cottages.
Have been customer of Sykes Cottages for a number of years - no more!

- Urine stained mattress - disgusting
- Freezer compartment solid with ice - couldn't get anything in
- Dodgy lock/key to front door. Couldn't get in one evening - it took us over an hour to get in one evening
- Four plates available but two chipped
- Office extremely dusty
- Beware, car parking in season a very bad problem
On discovery of the mattress, we packed and went home three days early.
Left feedback with Yorkshire Coastal Cottages but they couldn't be assed to reply!

Well i booked Rigg Cottage in Sandsend on Saturday 17th May but didnt check my confirmation until Sunday 18th. Panicking I realised the dates were wrong. I tried to change the booking to the correct dates but its already reserved. Naturally reaching out for help on the Sunday explaining the situation. I cried to call but it was after 4PM so i sent an SMS, e-mail and whatsapp message but no luck. I ve been on the phone since 830 Monday 19th July 2025 and so far I am being told that ive lost my money and that they did not receive my messages. This is despite me proposing to take another property in Sandsend N Yorks. As we speak Im again on hold for 29 minutes. To note, no payment has been taken but honestly my experience with this company Sykes/Yorkshire Coastal properties is pretty harsh. I will update once I get through...

I was a bit dubious about this property after negative reviews. How wrong was I. Lovely clean, comfortable cottage. Well furnished and everything supplied that you need. I will be back. Don't hesitate to book. Beach, cafe and pub all within 2 minutes. The food in the pub is worth a try.

We arrived at East Row Lodge in Sandsend, Whitby.
From start to finish our experience was appalling. The cottage was dirty and in disrepair, so bad we did not stay and found a hotel.
We have asked for a refund but there are so many parties involved , no one responds.
Do not use this company, they should be ashamed of themselves.

DO NOT (and I cannot stress this enough) book your holiday through this company! They're actually owned by Sykes Cottages. We booked a supposedly 5* cottage in Whitby called Rooftops Cottage, paying £1100 for 2 people/one week. On arrival, what we found was a shabby and dirty cottage in bad need of a thorough clean and full update. The furniture was old and stained, there was a bizarre hole in the lounge floor and the bed had sand and stains on the fitted sheet. The bed mattress also seemed very worn and was totally unsupportive. The guest book in the property contained lots of comments from previous disappointed customers too. We contacted Yorkshire Coastal Cottages (which we hadn't realised is just a branch of Sykes) & they were APPALLING. Simply forwarded our messages to the owner & then sent back her reply, saying we could leave by 10am the next morning & she'd refund us £600. So we'd be out £500 for staying one night and having made a four hour journey! I was genuinely astonished by their attitude and rudeness and total lack of effort to resolve the problems. I asked them to confirm WHEN the property had received its 5* rating (as in our opinion it must have been many years previously) but they refused to answer.

We had our booking for the Cottage at Sandsend cancelled by Yorkshire Coastal Cottages now owned by Sykes because they did not take my balance from my credit card that I paid my deposit on, although I had it in black and white 3 times that was what would happen.
We went to see the cottage as we wanted to go back to Sandsend, their description does say that you have to park in the parking area, but no mention of the most important information to get to the Cottage. Once you have parked your car you have to go over a foot bridge that has 4 steps up and 6 steps down but the most important part is not mentioned at all to get up to the level of the Cottage there are 28 steps to the level then you see the cottage is called The Cottage Tea Pot Hill !!
This is bad enough if you have to do it with out luggage or shopping, but we go out every day exploring the area, I suffer from Fibromyalgia I would not of been able to go out every day after climbing those stairs and steps twice a day, so that would of ruined my holiday.
There was two other comments that mentioned the parking and the steps but they are not on here anymore
When I said to Yorkshire Costal Cottages about this I was told that you can see it’s on a level and I should of made an enquiry before booking the Cottage ??

Now bought out by Sykes Cottages - the one that was getting a lot of media attention for being difficult over rebooking and refunds during Covid-19. We had a couple of problems during our stay and had to call them - took a long time (and a lot of phone credit) to get through to someone who could actually understand us, and then got given completely inaccurate information. Rang again to be told 'sorry - there's nothing we can do'.

My holiday was withdrawn/cancelled by YCC and I'm still waiting to receive my refunded deposit. All of my emails have been ignored, wait times of over one hour by phone.
Update - still waiting to hear from YCC, still no refund, still unable to contact by phone (2hrs). Did a bit of research and this is not uncommon. Also found the property we booked has cancelled before & there have been no refunds forthcoming.

Dirty in most places with broken furniture and a filthy cooker. It was obvious that nobody was checking the cleaning or general maintenance of the property, which is a real shame as it was roomy and in a good location.

Yorkshire Coastal Cottages / Sykes were absolutely abysmal in their customer service. We called them (and waited nearly twenty minutes for an answer) to report the numerous problems the day we arrived. Three weeks later we have had no feedback, and even worse, no return of our deposit. We are on the point of raising it as an issue with the credit card company, as numerous calls of complaint have gone unanswered.

It seems to us unfair to blame the staff, they are inundated with calls and emails on similar issues to those that we have raised. The owners of the property and the agency should be ashamed of themselves.

We will never be caught out again by this company and would advise any prospective customers to look carefully at customer feedback on here and elsewhere.

Now sold out to Sykes Cottages DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY you will have to deal with Sykes Cottages if you have any problems. We booked a week in Whitby with YCC in July 2019 at Dovecote Cottage, shown in the brochure is being "on the edge of open countryside" with "far reaching views to Whitby" and photographs showing the cottage in the countryside. When we arrived a new housing estate has been built right next door overlooking the cottage on all sides. The cottage was also badly run down, with poor cleanliness, mould in showers, poor equipment and overgrown lawn etc. SYKES COTTAGES had appalling customer service, were rude and arrogant and refused to do anything about it. They just tell you your contract is with the cottage owner and that they are not responsible. Unethical company, very poor customer service. Previous stays with YCC have been good but we will not use them again now they have been sold to Sykes Cottages.

Very poor cleaning services, but top dollar charged and sometimes cleaning not even done when billed, glad to move away when contract finished, beware.
