Illinois to Texas

The Packrat storage unit was a plus!

It was very hard for the driver to get parked in our new place because the driveway was so short but he made it work and was very courteous to us. I also had no problem rescheduling the date of pickup. It was a plus to have the storage unit so that we could take our time loading and unloading it.

Great Experience

The storage container was dropped off and picked up when promised. The unit itself was very good and secure, and the billing process was very easy and much more reasonable than other competitors.

NO customer service

I called 1-800-packrat on 08-17-22 to get a quote. My son is moving from Fl. to Boston for college. The rep said they "want my business" and met the quote I received from PODS ($2250.00). I booked the move informing her that the pickup was from a home with a driveway, but asked how the delivery in Boston, a major city with parallel parking would work. She said I needed a permit from the city of Boston for 2 parking spaces to allow the 8 foot container to be delivered. When I called the city, they said this must be done in person. I had to work with "Permit Pullers" paying a total of $260 for a 2 parking space permit for 48 hours: 09-02-22 - 09-03-22. I called packrat on delivery day 09-02-22 since I heard nothing and was given a time frame of 11:45am - 3:45pm. At 5:23pm, I was notified that there was a break-down of a truck and my delivery would be "first thing the next morning". On 09-03-22 I called to get a delivery time and was told 3-5 pm- NOT the morning. At 2pm the driver called and at 3pm he arrived on the wrong side of the street yelling out the window "That's not enough space. You need 4 car lengths. You have to go to the warehouse to get your stuff". Then he left. I promptly called 1-800-PACKRAT and spoke with Melody who would call me back. At 5:45pm, I received a voicemail from Carlos who said, "They do need 4 spaces to park" also stating I could go to the warehouse to pick it up myself Tuesday. I returned the call, and spoke with Stephanie (Escalations) suggesting I go to the permit office on Tuesday 09-06-22 to try for a 4 space permit. I had a flight booked to leave Boston on 09-04-22. Ultimately I had to pay for the hotel to extend my stay 3 days, rent a U-Haul van, and drive 60 miles to retrieve my belongings (while also getting hit by a semi). Through these 4 days they called me once and made NO effort to work with me or take any responsibility for their mistake. I was only reimbursed for the unused permit $260. Nightmare is too weak of a word.
Update 10/06/22:
The company has offered me an $800 refund stating this is the best they can do and that it's "nearly a 50% refund". $800 out of $2250 is not close to 50%. But they want to placate me to avoid negative feedback and are not overly concerned with customer satisfaction. I have no choice but to accept this amount to help recoup at least a small fraction of all of my expenses due to them.

I called Pack Rat to check on a…

I called Pack Rat to check on a container that was picked up in May to insure it was at the warehouse. I had not heard anything from Pack Rat concerning charges for the previous months. Kayla was very helpful in solving the issue. A mistake was made on Pack Rats end they did not charge me for the previous three months. That is customer service to the nth degree. I am back on schedule with the monthly charge. I highly recommend Pack Rat.

Exceeded our expectations

Definitely recommend. We used PackRat to move from Colorado to Florida. Everything was great and timely from initial quotation, communication, container delivery, pickup, storage, and delivery to our new address. Wouldn't hesitate to use PackRat again.

George Greenfield and Rachel Holland were particularly helpful. As a result, our move went very smoothly.

They were very professional move from…Fl to back home

They were very professional move from one state to another. Delivered the pod when they said picked it up on the day they said. Delivered it in the other state and picked it up the same day as scheduled. Very pleased.

Relocation made easy...

This is the second time I used Pack Rat and I'm very please with each experience. The staff was so accommodating to my needs and directed me every step of the way. I had to move south for my job, then return to the north once finish. Not only did I move, but needed my things stored until I found a house. This was taken care of also. Then when I was ready to received my pod, it was delivered on time with no damage to the items inside. I'll recommend them to anyone who is in need of moving and/or storage.

Report this company to the Better Business Bureau

I'd recommend everyone who had a bad experience with Zippy Shell/1-800-PACK-RAT to notify the Better Business Bureau (BBB.org). It's my greatest wish that they lose their accreditation and implode like so much garbage.

I used Zippy Shell for a long distance move. The pick up went well, but everything went off the rails after that. I was lied to about the expectancy date for my furnishings to arrive to my new location. I was told the representative "misspoke, and was being retrained". I asked when the new ETA was and they quoted another two weeks. I asked them to confirm the location of my belongings at that time and they actually could not confirm that my belongings had even left my hometown. Within those next two weeks I did not hear from them; I had to contact the company several times to make sure the items had left and were being directed to me. On the next expected delivery date I was told the delivery would be delayed another week because the third party delivery service they use was "down a forklift". I'd like to emphasize the fact that ONE forklift delayed delivery for a full week.. ONE fork lift brought this company to a grinding halt!

During this move I was told (another lie) by another representative that they could compensate me -$50 per each late day; they did not. I was also made to sign an agreement that indicates two half (50%) payments; one half before pick-up and one half at drop-off. The agreement also clearly stated 'NO storage time/immediate delivery'. I was charged a month storage and the second payment I made was more than the first payment made. When I questioned the second payment I was directed to a hyperlink on the agreement (which is not part of the signed document) that indicates third party fees.. quite literally a hidden/undisclosed fee.

Lastely, I experienced an unfortunate event during this move when my pet passed away. I don't blame this company for the passing of my pet, but the fact of the matter is that I had moved into an empty home and waited for my furnishings. My pet's bed was part of those furnishings and it keeps me awake at night with the thought that my pet wasn't comfortable and did not recognize his surroundings before he passed. I'll never forgive myself for putting him through this move.

I reported this company to BBB and did not get the outcome I had hoped for, but would like to urge others to do the same if you have similar experiences. I have found several more reviews like this one (some much worse) on different platforms: yelp, google, trustpilot, consumer affairs.

This company is fraudulently representing themselves as a moving service and they are not one. They outright lied about their service dates/times/pricing. They contract third parties to move your belongings while not being responsible for the outcomes, which also leaves you without recourse when your belongings are damaged or go missing.

Please do not give this company your business! They're cheap and there's a reason for it.

UPDATE: They've replied to this post and done absolutely nothing to resolve the issue with me. I haven't even been contacted. Total bullsh!t artists.

Can't be trusted with your life stuff...

*Make sure you put an Apple tag or another geo location tracker with your stuff so you know where it is. They will not tell you with any accuracy or honesty. And only the dispatch manager knows what’s going on so make sure you ask for them if you want to know where your stuff is.

I had no problems ordering for a cross country move with them. They even dropped off the container and provided good communications until after they picked it up. The problem was once they had my container and were supposed to transport it.

They waited 19 days from the time they picked it up to begin to ship it. Which is one day from the time they were supposed to deliver it. I had been calling asking why it had not moved (5 times) prior to it shipping. Each time they said it’s on schedule and not to worry even though no one checked on it. 7days before it shipped, I calculated it was impossible for my container to arrive on time (11hrs driving limit per day which is approximately 600-650 miles and a day for transfer to local service for delivery). I called and they agreed and revised the date by adding an additional 8 days to the delivery time. 8 days later and it’s still not here. I call but there’s no urgency in their response.

They keep telling me they’re sorry but it happens. It’s the busy season. The truck broke down (really). The carrier never got scheduled. Hard to believe. The family is suffering and stressed out. No idea how much longer it’ll take them to deliver.

Have used them twice and a friend of mine has as well. All great experiences. They are on time, competitively priced and have some really great people that work for them. Equipment was all in good condition. Always will be my first call.
