DO NOT USE Airport Rentals.
They are just a booking platform who took a $95 deposit which the car company we rented from (East Coast Rentals), said that they had never received from Airport Rentals.
We paid Airport rentals for insurance but were then charged more by East Coast Rentals who said Airport Rentals never honour the insurance. We had to buy further insurance from East Coast as the insurance we bought through Airport Rentals was worthless.
East coast said Airport Rentals is an overseas firm that they had never been able to collect from.
I should have just gone straight to a local company like Budget, East Coast Rentals or Hertz and skipped Airport Rentals. My mistake, one I will never make again.

We would also like to clarify that we are not an overseas company. We are a New Zealand-based business with offices in multiple locations, and we have been working in partnership with East Coast Car Rentals for over a decade. We will be following up internally to understand why incorrect information may have been communicated to you.
In relation to insurance, our website & confirmation emails clearly outline that the protection purchased is provided by a third-party insurer (RentalCover). This policy is designed to refund your excess in the event of damage, and customers are not required to purchase additional protection offered by the rental provider. However, rental companies may still offer their own cover at the counter as an optional extra.
We would appreciate the opportunity to review this further. Please provide your booking reference starting with an IM or the name the reservation was made under so we can investigate and assist you directly.

After reviewing your case, we’ve identified that the price difference was related to an after-hours service fee. This fee is applied based on the selected pick-up and drop-off times once a vehicle is chosen, and applies when collections or returns fall outside standard operating hours at airport locations.
We agree that these fees should be clearly visible upfront. As this may not have been sufficiently clear during the initial search stage, we understand how this could be confusing when comparing prices. We’re currently reviewing how this information is displayed to improve transparency for our customers.

Disappointing Experience and Inconsistent Service
Our experience was disappointing overall — although the booking was made for a Toyota RAV4 AWD or similar, the rental process involved multiple vehicle changes, including older models, which resulted in unnecessary inconvenience and disruption during the trip, with one vehicle also developing a fault after a short period of use; while we understand the use of “or similar” classifications within the industry, the level of consistency, reliability, and overall service delivery did not meet reasonable expectations. Notably, the explanation provided in direct correspondence differed from the response given publicly, which further highlights a lack of clarity and consistency in how the situation has been addressed. Overall, the response was overly focused on policy rather than acknowledging the practical impact on the customer experience.

From what you’ve described, the concerns relate to the vehicle provided and the service delivered by the rental company. As a booking platform, we facilitate reservations, while vehicle allocation, condition, and on-the-ground service are managed directly by the rental provider.
