New Camper Late & Then Sold Out From Under Us

We ordered a high spec camper from Big Wave on a new T6.1 chassis to be our new kayaking base camp.

“Completion” came after 9 weeks as opposed to the 3-4 originally advised. Not the big issue though.

We did our inspection today having insured it, paid a deposit etc. There were multiple scratches down the roof, and a warning light on for a failed cruise control system. This wasn’t however the big issue - as kayakers one of the reasons we selected Big Wave was the promise of a 75kg roof rail system. On inspection, the thick looking bars were nearly the full length of the vehicle, but didn’t have any centre support. They were each fastened only by one tiny (M6?) bolt at each end. The rails predictably were very bendy, and as I jumped up to look, found that they actually moved from side to side. This was because the single bolt went through an oval slit hole.

With these 3 issues we said we would look into alternate roof bars which would actually take the load, and said instead we’d pick up mid week when they’d fixed the issues. Remember this was a £53k vehicle, so you expect it to be right.

As we went down the motorway on the way home, we were in the midst of calling Leighton to get a stronger rail system when the phone rang from Big Wave. The ultimatum was pay today or they’d sell it to someone else the next day. We said we were on the motorway so couldn’t do anything about it now, and hadn’t had any opportunity to close out the roof bar issue.

Their response - we’re selling it now unless you pay up. This was relayed to us by the sales person under instruction from the director of the business.

The rest of the van was fine, but if you are worried about service or support levels, or indeed the way you’ll be treated after waiting 9 weeks, paying a deposit and driving 2.5 hours to pick up a vehicle in good faith, then I’d say - be worried.

This waste of time cost us a 250 mile round trip in fuel, 9 weeks when we could have ordered from someone else, £30 cancellation charges for the insurance we put in place - and as we sit here at end of June, basically our summer.

It’s also worth noting that during the 5 week delay, communication from Big Wave was terrible. It would have been easy for them to communicate fully that there were parts delay issues and to give a new estimate. Instead, we would see an update on a Sunday simply moving the delivery date out a week at a time without any comment. That meant we couldn’t plan anything.

Ultimately, Big Wave managed to take all the joy and excitement out of what could have been an awesome experience. All we asked was that the parts were fit for purpose and that the van was working and unscratched upon delivery.

Update - I see the response from Big Wave. Note that their response on Trustpilot came faster than their refund of the deposit….

We did indeed restate to Big Wave that if the issues were fixed we’d still take the van. Refer to my note that we were trying to save our summer. We found two other suppliers who actually understood roof racks who could retrofit or supply a part which was fit for purpose.

Big Wave’s response was that they refused to sell us the van for which we had paid a deposit. I guess that means that the deposit scheme they use isn’t really a deposit, or that they are comfortable to renege on a contract.

EDIT - Under the circumstances and after discussion with the Customer we did agree not to sell him the van. Any Customer where the transaction does not complete has their deposit refunded as per our “fully refundable” terms stated at time of purchase.

Great Value for Money and Positive Experience

We had toyed with the idea of owning a VW Transporter conversion for years and this year we finally took the plunge.

After scouring the internet for months, I couldn't find a retailer who could match Big Wave's prices. After meeting with Jodan in the Birmingham branch, we went ahead with a custom conversion.

I'm the type of person who is always expecting there to be a catch, especially when goods are priced lower than competitors but my experience was really positive throughout.

When I picked up the van, I expected the paint work to be in poor condition as I had opted for an older, higher mileage van to fit my budget but the paint work and been uplifted and repaired so there were no stone chips or scratches.

The van came with a new cam belt, full service and a full MOT which gave me peace of mind.

The quality of the conversion itself surpassed my expectations and when we were away for the first time, we received lots of positive comments from fellow campers.

My colleague is a VW Transporter enthusiast and he is very impressed with the quality of the van, the conversion and the value for money.

The only negative that I can think of is that we have picked up some issues with the fitment of the roof and some other minor niggles but to be fair to Ann in the After Sales Team, she has been more than understanding and is currently arranging for a suitable time for the rework to take place.

All in all though, I'm delighted with my van, the conversion and the price that I paid.

Thanks Big Wave for a positive experience. I would recommend you to anyone.

Recent purchase - 2018 plate SWB 4 Berth Conversion -Silver

My wife and I purchased a van from Big Wave in Birmingham last month, having been saving for one for a while.

It’s fair to say we’re both quite hesitant when it comes to making any large purchase such as this so we were slightly nervous after reading some of the reviews on our way home after leaving a deposit on our new van. We trusted our instinct in the end and went through with the purchase as we had a good feeling after visiting the showroom in Birmingham and meeting Jodan. I don’t know how much they pay that guy but it really isn’t enough. He’s worth his weight in solid gold, he spent so much time answering our many questions over the two weeks that followed. I even raised the point of the negative reviews I’d seen and gave him the opportunity to put our minds at rest, which he did and more.

I have to say after looking at VW Campers for some time, Big Wave are definitely the best value for money. Fantastic spec available at a much more competitive price than some of their competitors. We agreed a fantastic deal for our new van with 20in alloys, tv, tow bar, wind out awning as extras. If I shop around today, I still can’t find a better price. For that, you might expect some imperfections and like anything in life; if you look for imperfections you may find them. What sets these guys apart from the rest though is their commitment to make things right in any event. They’re not squeaky clean, you may find a few specs of dust in the cupboards upon collection but look at the price you’re paying vs others out there (let alone for a VW California). They’re a conversion company, you’re not buying a vehicle from a main dealer. Their lead times are also months quicker than others out there. Our van was ready for collection 3 weeks after placing the order. It would’ve been ready after two weeks if we hadn’t wanted to change the leather interior for a different colour, which they were only too happy to do for us.

Another positive was the way they dealt with our concern for our two year old son who will sleep in the pop top bed, they supplied an extension board (veltrim lined) free of charge for the bed to prevent him falling down during the night.

The only reason this isn’t a five star review is the van wasn’t 100% perfect upon collection. However, the response from Big Wave to make the situation right truly was. Also, if like me, you read mainly 5 star reviews you may start to feel skeptical about their authenticity. This is a genuine review from a very happy couple who recently enjoyed our first two camping trips in our new van to Anglesey and Sherwood Forest with our son. He loves the van too! I wanted to give the van a good run out before posting a review. The fault we experienced within our first two days of ownership was actually with the base vehicle itself (not the conversion) in that the central locking was faulty. I called Anne and Jodan who were both extremely helpful and keen to address the issue quickly. They paid for a local diagnosis for my convenience and it turned out a new comfort module was required, and the garage I took the van to informed me VW would need to take care of the replacement and programming. Big Wave and Blue Chip (warranty company) were both on hand to cover the cost of work as required but VW couldn’t book us in for two weeks or more. At this point, Jodan offered to collect the van from our home, rectify the fault with their own VW mechanic and return the vehicle to us at their cost. That, in my view is putting the customer first. Yes, it is disappointing the fault occurred and had it not, this would’ve been 5 stars but I cannot fault the response from Big Wave. They didn’t have to do that, it’s one thing to address the fault but they didn’t have to collect and return with the vehicle refueled as they did, let alone pay for another garage local to me to perform the diagnosis. Let’s be clear, I chose to purchase a vehicle from a dealer many miles away in Birmingham. It is not their fault that it is inconvenient to me to take the vehicle back to their branch for repairs which they are fully prepared to honour. They seem more than happy to take care of any issues that arise, they are not obliged to pay for a local garage to do any work for me, nor are they obliged to collect and return the vehicle at my convenience and their expense.

Absolutely top notch customer service in my book. Restored my faith entirely, and I have no doubt if there are any other similar issues that arise Big Wave will be happy to support me either at their expense or that of Blue Chip during our 3 year extended warranty period.

If, like I did, you have some doubts after reading the usual negative reviews I hope my review goes some way to encourage you and others to go along and judge for yourselves. I’m very glad we did.

Huge disappointment !

Unfortunately we have had nothing but problems from day one. Badly fitted interior which constantly needs repair, no wheel locking nut for spare tyre, only one key, loose wiring, badly fitted roof (unbearable squeak) the list goes on and on. In isolation not huge but when sitting with kids in middle of nowhere and a puncture, unable to remove spare tyre - it suddenly became all the more frustrating.

They do try to help but you have to really chase for any response. (Rarely answer phone) Lots of unnecessary hassle which has really taken the fun out the van, always awaiting the next issue! Hang on - this just in, nitro struts to raise roof jammed ! Upon calling them told to order new one, and fit it which i have done only to find out this is a small adjustment to a valve which would have saved more money and hassle.

A real shame, its a nice van but the workmanship is shoddy and rushed! if you buy a van here make sure you check absolutely everything out and unless you live near them (we are 600 miles away) don't waste your time or money on Big Wave.

Updated - You are well aware of the issues i have had and i have forwarded you my details. As I said, you tried to help but this does not detract from the fact the problems are continual and i am fed up chasing you with no response hence this review! Typo 400 miles ! my apologies, glad you are focussing on the issue at hand ! PS - the key lock nut you sent me was wrong one and actual bolt was jammed so cheaper just to pay and have it repaired at local garage which i have done !

Updated - no issues have been reported ?? Really?? That’s simply not true ! I have several emails backing this up! Yes we bought it last year and have one problem after another ! Maybe if you actually answered your phone they could have been dealt with quicker !

Update - You really are missing the point and your arrogance above underlines this ! your workmanship is shoddy at best and we have spent considerable money fixing issues which should never have been a problem - since our purchase LAST year as you highlight - the van has rarely been out the garage, if you think that is acceptable then bash on, please all buyers from Big Wave, be very very wary !

PS - for the record my last response to you on the wheel nut was asking if you can confirm the spare tyre would still fit ? to which you wouldn't confirm and at which point did i confirm well nut was correct ? please post evidence ?

UPDATED - The issues have been ongoing since i bought the van, not suddenly appeared after six months. Just last week i was advised to replace the struts for the roof tilt by one of your guys as they were broken. Upon buying new ones, it became apparent that a simple adjustment on the existing ones (gas release) would have worked. The facts are you sold me a van with several issues which was purely down to lack of attention as you were obviously keen to get the van out the door as quick as possible. You have made the buying experience very stressful, thats not an opinion thats simply a fact. I will highlight here as my emails have gone unanswered on the subject regarding the spare wheel - was this checked before you sold the van and will this fit in the event of a puncture ? Instead of actually trying to help, showing any form of remorse for the hassle - all you have done is try to pick apart my comments instead of addressing them - I await your feedback on spare wheel....

No answer on spare wheel ? i have several emails asking for this from you, even ones with pictures attached??

Great company to deal with

Great company to deal with again. I’ve had my camper for a little while now and my parents have just bought one. Attention to detail was second to none. They went the extra mile... literally... delivering the van to my elderly parents who were shielding and were fully Covid safe and took extra precautions to clean the van before handing over the keys.Mum and dad can’t wait to get out and about in Betsy. Nothing but praise for dealing with my parents over the phone and countless emails making sure it’s all perfect for them Thanks so much

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!

Second Edit: I can’t work out how to add photos to a Trustpilot review but if you check google reviews you will see my review plus pictures - a screen shot of the original eBay listing with Big Wave Campers wording listing an 04 plate.. The van is photographed by Big Waves Campers in front of the dealership itself. Why would I go to these lengths to make up a random lie...? This company is trying to cover up their mistakes.

Edit: re the response below from the company - I have tripple checked all the the links and it is the correct company. It was the Studley branch not the Bude one. The van was advertised through eBay but sold by the dealer and we collected it from Studley. It was an older second hand vehicle they had been given in part ex. I WAS told that the vehicle is ‘sold as seen’ and I was not allowed to get it checked until I had bought it, clearly trying to hide something.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!! This was our awful experience: We were sold a second hand vehicle with a seemingly valid MOT which, after an independent mechanical inspection, turned out to be as good as scrap and completely unsafe and not roadworthy. They tried to blame the person they got it from as part-ex by saying it came with an MOT, but no reliable dealer will not inspect a vehicle themselves before selling it on.

The customer service was terrible every step of the way: They refused a pre-sale independent mechanical inspection (which I later found out a dealer isn’t allowed to do), they delayed our collection time on the day without giving a valid reason (possibly in order to prevent the inspection they knew we had booked in). Luckily our mechanic still fit us in and provided us with an extensive list of everything that was wrong with it so we returned the vehicle. I dread to think what has happened to the vehicle now. If you are about to buy a red VW transporter pop top from them with the reg SX04 HLY – DON’T.

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 you can return a faulty product and expect a full refund within 14 days to the same manner paid….. this did not happen. They insisted they had to pay the money back via BACS and that it would take 7 – 14 days. Sure enough after 14 days there was no money in the account… after many, many ignored phone calls and angry voicemails left, HALF(??) the money was paid (outside of the 14 days). I was told that the company card has a limit of £10k per day for transfers so they had to pay it in two halves over two days – completely going against what they had told me about the transfer taking 14 days. They did it instantly and still have failed to explain to me why they held my money for over two weeks when a transfer was clearly possible.

They said I need to speak to ‘accounts’ and gave me the number of a woman. They can’t even get their story straight within the company as this women told me she wasn’t from accounts, she was from after sales and had basically been told to call me to make sure I was happy with the arrangement – I wasn’t. Constant lies, do not use this company. I am also reporting the place the signed of the MOT that came with the vehicle as this is putting people’s lives at risk.

Stephanie in response to your review I am not sure that you have the right Company ? Big Wave Campers do NOT sell vehicles that old ? In response to the comments about vehicle checks, it is a rare request however we have no objections of customer’s having Independent checks should they wish, so again this is not something we would say. It is unusual, but Customer’s do sometimes take out Independent checks on Retail sales which is fine. An 04 plate vehicle is not one which we have had for sale on our Retail stocklist.

Doesn't match the description!

I bought a camper from this company back in March 2021. There have been numerous issues since purchasing the vehicle and I'm still trying to resolve them! Advert stated 'full service history' but to date only partial history received. It was sold without a spare key (this was only disclosed on delivery), incorrect alloys were fitted, the van arrived with a cracked bumper and the interior wasn't even valeted (we were in lockdown at the time). It has now come to light that although the vehicle was advertised and sold to me as 102Bhp, I have since found out that the van is actually 84Bhp, which would explain why it struggled to get up hills! I'm obviously extremely upset and angry about the whole experience, however I love the van and I've already invested a lot of time and money into making it mine. When I approached Big Wave about the false advertisement the only response I've received so far is "we'll refund you and take the van back!". Apparently the company Director refuses to discuss the matter with me and this is his only solution!

Highly recommend …

We brought a van from BWC in 2019 and is the best thing we have purchased. The friendly sales team who did not push us into buying. The quality and standard of the Van's is fab. The after sales with BWC is a quality of it's own. Quick response and always happy to help. Attended the workshop and the staff there ae just like the sales team friendly and attend to your needs. If I could I would deffently buy another van off them and I always recommend the company to further customers. 100%

We just took delivery of a newly converted 20 plate VW transporter SWB from BWC. With the dream of foreign holidays cancelled this year and a long held desire to finally buy a camper van, we discovered big wave campers. After further googling, seeing the classic negative reviews, and searches we decided these guys seemed the best to buy from.
Now, we’re in Norfolk and the van of interest was at their Bude forecourt. They delivered to our door and even came out a week later to fix a very minor snag. I have to say that the after sales service, from Ann in particular, has been second to non. They recognised we were buying online, in a pandemic, from a town nearly 400 miles away and handled any concerns and queries professionally and with good humour. I cannot comment on some of the negative reviews we saw and that remain for this company but I had a mate of mine, a true VW camper man, give this conversion a tyre kick at point of delivery and save for a few very minor issues, he said he could not believe the quality and was quite jealous. Result!!
We’ve since camped out on the drive in our new van and it was everything we’d hoped for. Highly recommend Big Wave Campers. If you want a California then this is the closest you’ll get for a lot less but without scrimping on quality.

If I could give a zero I would. After putting down a 'fully refundable deposit' on a van and subsequently seeing many very poor reviews on Trustpilot we decided not to conntinue with the purchase. We requested the return of our deposit and were told we would have to do this via the credit card company. After several polite emails requesting that they return our money as agreed; it was obvious that they would make it as difficult and a prolonged process as possible and that it would end up in the small claims court. This is the extent of their aftersales customer service, very poor. Be wary and please read some of the negative reviews on Trustpilot before you trust these people with thousands of pounds of your money.

Mr Leckie, in response I would like to state that your deposit IS FULLY REFUNDABLE via your credit card company. We advised you that we cannot make the refund onto a credit card (as stated ) and our Finance Manager telephoned you to discuss. You were more than understanding after the reasons had been explained to you and said you would obtain the money from them.
At time of cancellation you also advised that the reason for having to do so was “unforeseen personal circumstances “. We said that we hoped the family issues were not too serious and that everything would be okay. You even thanked us for our kind words.
The situation was, as far as we were aware resolved until we started to get e-mails stating you would be taking further advice. You sent half a dozen, all of which were replied to and it was only when you stated you had “changed your mind” that the truth came out.
We also have taken legal advice and have replied accordingly to your letter.
