Was a loyal customer of many years
Was a loyal customer of many years, always with on-time payments. Recently, due to inactivity, and since my balance was $0.00, they spontaneously closed my account. When I called to question it, they stated my FICO score was low and I had an inactive account. 1. I NEVER received a warning about utilizing card and 2. My credit is in the 700s. They refused to activate my card.
They keep reducing my credit limit
They keep reducing my credit limit. They reduced it by $800. I made an $800 payment to make up the difference and they reduced it by another $800.
They are awful
They are awful, do not open an account - you'll be sorry.
I have had an account for years and want to transfer to Schwab as I'm getting older and need to consolidate.
They have put so many barriers up to get MY money - unbelievable.....it looks like robbery.
My next step will be a complaint to federal banking regulators.
Barclay's poor customer…
Barclays has very poor customer service. When they took over the GM Card from Goldman Sachs, they automatically enrolled me in online statements and payment notifications without my knowledge or consent. As a result, I never received paper statements and wasn't aware that my payment was overdue.
Because I wasn't receiving statements, I incurred late fees before I realized something wasn't right. Even after I explained the situation, Barclays refused to waive the late fees, even though the issue was caused by changes they made without informing me.
I ultimately canceled my GM Card and will never do business with Barclays again. It's not about the money—it's about the principle. They treat you like a valued customer as long as you're making payments, but the moment you have a problem, they seem to forget that you're a customer.
Can't make a payment
I got locked out of my credit card in January. I've scheduled online payments since then. Today, one week before the due date, I'm told I can't schedule online payments over the phone... They will review any late fees charged after I resolve all the paperwork... Not helpful! Apparently fraudsters want to make payments?
The absolute worst credit card co.pany…
The absolute worst credit card company out there. I have been basically harassed at this point. I tried to update my phone number to the most current and have been dealing worh the fraud department for months. I have faxed over my driver's license, ssn card and bank statement and yet they are still giving me issues. I called back in to update my email and phone number and my information sent over was good enough to update all my info. But they locked my card again because my cell phone caller id doesn't show my name because I am a business owner. Absolute harassment. This has cause me to be locked out of the system, have late payments on my record. Now they are saying my drivers license and ssn are not clear enough on the faxes to unlock my card and want me to send it all over again. HARASSMENT!! IF I COULD LEAVE NO STARS I WOULD.
This beautiful bank that i love
This beautiful bank that i love, literally has zero customer service, no agent knows anything. Over 20 days a fund transfer pending but no body has a say/clue about it. They only can read computer screen. One manager call me Saturday to talk about and i missed the call, i called back in 10 min and agent said no managers available sat and sundays, how the manager call and leave massage to call back if any manager not available.
The worst bank on the market
I’ve been a responsible customer with a clean payment history, never late, never missed a bill, and yet they decided that my credit limit should be slashed from $5,000 down to a humiliating $250.
No explanation that makes sense. No consideration of my history. Just a cold, careless reduction that feels less like risk management and more like a random punishment. Imagine trusting a financial institution to support you, only for them to yank away your available credit overnight as if loyalty means nothing.
What makes it worse is the complete lack of accountability. Customer service offers generic, scripted responses that amount to “we can do this whenever we want,” as if that should be acceptable. It isn’t.
This kind of behavior doesn’t just inconvenience people—it actively damages credit utilization ratios and financial stability for no clear reason. If a bank can arbitrarily cut a $5,000 limit to $250 for a reliable customer, then what’s the point of trusting them at all?
Bottom line: unreliable, dismissive, and completely disconnected from basic customer fairness. I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone who expects consistency or respect.
Just a terrible experience trying to…
Just a terrible experience trying to setup an online savings account. They also tried an automatic transfer from my external bank that I didn’t realize they would do.
Not a transparent company
DON'T GIVE THEM YOUR SAVINGS!!!
DON'T GIVE THEM YOUR SAVINGS!!!
This is the worst bank ever, just read the reviews. As soon as they took my savings, they restricted/blocked my online access. Since I'm in the US, I don't have access to their bank and have to deal with their customer service, which is 99% AI.
Barclays customer service is the absolute worst. Calls during the past two weeks have met with 99% AI even when speaking with a supposed “real person”. They ask you to email your bank statement and ID on a non-secured email. I have no access to my savings account or my credit card with Barclays. It's ridiculous. They make you verify accounts that funded your savings account and then you can't get any help. I don't know when I'm going to get my account unfrozen.
As soon as I do, I'll be closing both my savings and my credit card with Barclays. Just horrible!
Worse card ever horrible customer…
Worse card ever horrible customer service stay away at all cost they are truly horrible
WARNING: Beware of doing business with Barclays Bank US
WARNING: Beware of doing business with Barclays Bank US. They work on an antiquated system, and if you every have any problem with your account (big or small), they will likely make you jump through hoops and their only possible solution is for you to FAX or possibly MAIL your personal information to them for verification. Also, they are notorious for constantly lowering limits. I have dealt with this company for years, but after their shenanigans, I have decided to just bury them in the back of my wallet. They're a headache to deal with. Not worth it!!!
Supervisor Alex is a Fraud
Alex, a supervisor in the Philippines barclay division, did nothing but degrade me for three hours and tell me that I was not deserving of a 50k miles promotion that I truly qualified for. I had to contact frontier and have a three way call in order for Alex to understand how horrific she was. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM START TO FINISH AND ALEX SHOULD BE FIRED IMMEDIATELY.
Deposit Accounts Banking US
I can't speak to thier credit card operation but they merged the credit card and bank deposit operation to a new website the past year or two. They completely ignore messages/mail asking you to call to an overseas 3rd world country telephone center even though they have operations in the U.S. with people who speak limited english asking all sorts of personal questions. This was not the case years ago. They are headed for regulatory complaints.
Terrible service
Terrible service! These people are thieves. I opened a new account with $10,000 (transferred from Chase), only to have Barclays immediately lock up my account, and demand additional verification of my Chase account and driver's license. I have also had a Barclays GM Mastercard (for 22 years - since 2004), with perfect payment history, but their customer service (which is an Indian call center with basically no English speaking skills and loud background noise - making it almost impossible to understand) treat you like a criminal. The only criminals are the people running this bank. DON'T OPEN AN ACCOUNT HERE. EVER.
Repeated Account Lockouts and Unreasonable Delays
I opened an account with Barclays for the competitive interest rate and a $200 promotion after maintaining a $30,000 deposit. Unfortunately, this has been one of the most frustrating banking experiences I’ve had.
Since opening my account, it has been restricted twice in just a few months. When your account is restricted, you cannot even log in to confirm your money is safe, which caused significant anxiety, especially when the automated phone system told me I didn’t even have an account.
The account opening and verification process took far too long, funding took about 10 days, and even small transfers regularly take around five business days. I am now being asked to reverify a bank account that funded Barclays months ago.
Most frustrating of all, resolving issues feels unnecessarily difficult. Phone support was unhelpful, and formal complaints apparently require mailing a physical letter in 2026. The entire experience has felt outdated, stressful, and unnecessarily complicated. Once my promotional period ends, I will be closing my account.
Worst experience ever in applying for a credit card
I applied for a credit card from them online and had to wait for a mailed letter response. The *letter* listed documentation they needed to complete my application (photos of DL, SS card, and copy of utility bills). There is no support for secure uploads - only mail or FAX. I mailed them in, waited a couple of weeks, and received the same *letter* again. I had to call to find out if they received my documents. The DL photos were not clear enough, and they needed the back of my SS card (which contains nothing but SS policy info). I mailed these in, waited a couple of weeks and received the same *letter* again. I called again to find out what was wrong. The DL photos are still not clear enough for them (they look fine to me). I give up! In 2026, it should not take two weeks to find out if they have received the information they need. And sending a form letter that gives no information about what the problem is kind of a slap in the face. The letter doesn't even include a phone number to call. They clearly don't care that much about the customer experience. It almost feels like they are trying to discourage credit card applications.
Horrible company
Horrible company. I had a Gap credit card and needed to do their hardship program. My bill was always due on the 3rd. But when i started the program they would debit money from my bank on the 8th which was fine until after a year the program ended and then I was supposed to pay by the 3rd. Well i didnt remember when it ended i just assummed it kept going until paid since they closed the account during this time. Well i ended up behind by 2 months and now marks on my credit report for being late! Who remembers all the details a year later? I even get paper statements. A heads up would be nice and debit on the 3rd the actual due date. Do not use this bank!!!! Never again. Talked to a supervisor even wouldnt help and good luck getting through the bots to talk to anyone!!!
Absolutely the WORST customer service…
Absolutely the WORST customer service I've ever experienced. Stay away! Have been trying to open a HYSA since March 2025. Finally got the account open in late April but then they put the account in "pending status" for additional verification needed so we can't deposit any money into the account. I've sent them every document they requested, numerous times and still every time I call to check the status, the persons who answer the phone, who can barely speak english and won't let you talk to a supervisor, tell me its still in review and need another 7-10 business days. I finally gave up today and opened an account with Vio Bank, with a higher yield, in minutes. Don't waste you time with Barclay's
Do not get the Carnival Rewards Mastercard
Specifically, the Carnival Rewards Mastercard. This company does not care about loyal customers. I paid my card off, continued to use it, made all payments on time, never even late. They slashed my limit to the point I couldn't even put a cruise on it if I wanted to. All the reasons they listed as to why were present when they approved me for the card at my original limit, so what is the real reason? The only thing i can figure is that we earned too many carnival rewards and they don't want to pay those out anymore. Terrible company-find another card with rewards to apply for!
