not worth it. autosomal test did not give alot of insight, somewhat inaccurate

Dreadful. Applied for two test kits for which they require two consent forms, but they only sent one. They do not respond to e-mails but direct you to complete an online query form on their website. I repeatedly completed these query forms over several months as no response to my query re the consent forms was received. Eventually I received an e-mail from customer services, apologising, with the excuse that all my completed online forms had ended up in their "spam" box. Obviously they don't check their spam box for months at a time. By then the consent forms had been revised and the one old one was no longer valid. I received an e-mail attachment for me to print out the forms myself. (I do not currently have access to a printer.) I asked them to post me the forms - guess what - no response.

I received an e-mail saying the results were ready, but have never been able to log in to look at them. It's always failed, even though I meticulously enter the passwords etc. given on application.

I concur with the reviews who believe the operation is a scam on the growing interest in DNA tests. A cumbersome service process, poor or less than knowledgeable IT. Things don't upload or downloaded video doesn't play. Direct e-mails to the CEO are blocked. Kicking myself for not finding these reviews first; it would have saved $$$$$! There's enough here to suggest to Mr. Greenspan to issue refunds to all those who have used their customer service system to solve problems.

This form should be: dates (plural) of experience. I'm up to 3 weeks of trying to solve issues. Many days, many contacts, many hours spent waiting for responses.

Very much a poor man's Ancestry.
You get "matches" but there is no way to connect them to you. I have 3,000 "matches" not one of them have any of my family's names. You can't check your "matches" trees, it doesn't say how much DNA you share. Really total waste of money. Haven't learn anything from "family finder"....not sure how you find your "family"
Where I learned so much from Ancestry, nothing from Family Tree DNA. Waste of money.

I ordered 2 DNA kits on 29th january. They were shipped in the day after the purchase and have been stuck on customs in my country since 16th february . On 1st April the package was returned to the sender (Famiy Tree DNA). Since then, I have contacted them more than once through their website, and I have not received any reply watsoever. They still did not refund me. As a professional enterprise, they ought to know that my country has costums issues with biological material, and they shouldn´t even sell it to my country. I`m not supposed to know those rules. I`m the client. So, don`t trust this company. I don`t know yet if they will refund me. That`s almost like stealing. Kit number SM13587

Took DNA Test. All of the results do not match anyone on our extended family tree as well as any results from Ancestry DNA Test. It appears to be a total scam.

I have been trying to request a password reset for years, and it won't work and goes into a loop. I tried some time back and Im trying again but no luck.

Inefficient. Lost first sample. Got another kit free. Took ages to post it (from Europe to USA) and then months to process it.
Then they muddled reports with those of another family members and it took about a year for them to correct that mistake. Seemingly Customer Service seriously understaffed!
Resulting Reports dissapointingly and uninformative.
Turns out that you are basically paying £500 / $500 to provide your DNA free for fairly obscure historical genetic research into "haplogroups" and you get very little back - (except that you are a man from a certain country, which you knew already!)
No interesting health or trait information is given - unless perhaps if you pay more money. They are constantly trying to get you to "upgrade" and pay more for little return! I did purchase a "Health and Fitness Report" but it did not work because of aforementioned muddling of family members results.
Also their formats and reports are not compatible with most other sites so you cannot even download info from Family History DNA and upload elsewhere to get info on traits and health from 23andMe or Ancestry etc.
Serious waste of money unless you are an expert "in the field" wanting to contribute to the minutae of Historical Demographics and getting very little in return.

In my opinion the negative reviews are excessive. It's true that there are things to improve but the company has been gradually raising its quality in recent years. They are the only ones who have given a complete and in-depth overview of the paternal line thanks to the Big Y test

This company, familytreedna, continues to send me spam.

1. I never opted into any list, but they put me on their marketing list themselves.
2. I clicked the unsubscribe link a year ago, and received a confirmation email of such.
3. They continue to send me marketing emails in violation of the CANN-SPAM Act.
4. These new marketing emails have no unsubscribe link, in violation of the CANN-SPAM Act.
5. Requests for them to actually remove me from their mailing list go unfulfilled.

family tree the biggest rip off no useful info no supprted data to conclude your big 450$ or your mtdna$ and results that show no connectivity of probability to be true and definitely not accurate this company should be out of buisness

I'm waiting for a response I'm told that everything has to be by email which if you call them,and the chat is with a chatbot not a person. I don't know if it takes weeks or longer to get a response. Now if you are in a group project,and you ask a group Administrators about anything that doesn't have anything to do with the purpose of why people pay for what the company claims to offer you will get a quick response. In group projects the necessary information to confirm a DNA Match is listed on charts. With the Big Y 700 DNA Test it only lists 101 Y STRS which those Y STRS are used to confirm DNA Matches. If you know anything about Y DNA Testing you can Google the Haplogroup of people in your Group Projects to confirm if you share any SNPS. Don't expect anyone that works for the company, or that runs group projects to be able to explain anything about the products and services that the company offers. To know and understand how to know what a Y DNA Match is as well as how to know if you have any Y DNA Matches you have to find blogs mainly on Facebook or Reddit where it will be explained with diagrams as well as examples. I have had my Big Y 700 results since 2019,and I have only had 1 DNA Match. The website which is why I contacted the company has told me that these other people whom I Match 95 Y STRS Identically,and the other 6 Y STRS each are only 1 deviation of difference also that I share Identical SNPS with within the lessthan the last 1,500 years that's Matching both ways to confirm a Y DNA Match the Website is telling me that they aren't DNA Matches? I'm hoping that they are taking me seriously,and if the information that I know to be true explain to me how much closer the DNA needs to Match to confirm a Y DNA Match if there isn't an issue with the Website which if so could take years before it's fixed?OK it's Monday November 13th after posting the information to the owners of the Y DNA Test in my Group Project as well as contacting Customer Service nothing to complain about taken care of 👍

I paid the 19 dollars to unlock the chromosome browser some time ago, and found it unlocked only for myself, and not the other three DNA kits that I manage.

So I paid a further 19 dollars to unlock the chromosome browser for one of the kits I manage - a little anxiously because I read the negative reviews of the website - but the response was instant and the chromosome browser was available immediately.

After having places an order and paid, i waited 6 weeks. The company told me the delivery time is 2 months !!! After 2 months the company explained its impossible to deliver in France. Since that time, i wait for m'y money back. Dont deal with this fraudulous company.

Super reliable. But, customer service is severely lacking. Unfortunately, cannot resurrect my ancestor. Yet, they insist on making me find some dna. I order mtdna and they could not use my sample. Will NOT refund. Insist that I find another victim.

Very kind and helpful sales team. Upon checking the info it appears a great feature is the processing of kit on-site in state-of-art laboratory.

I did a free autosomal transfer but it corrupted apparently so I had to message them for the corrupted kit to be removed. It took....a while. I had to e-mail them to remind them to do it, and it was done pretty much within two days of that follow-up e-mail. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and tried the autosomal transfer again, and this time it seemed to be working as I had the option for the autosomal unlock, so I paid around $19 for the unlock. Then....nothing. I wait about 10 days, still nothing so I message customer service to ask what is going on. They ask me to send over my DNA file, which I do, and they tell me they'll send it off to IT and it could take a few weeks. No problem.

I purchased this in late March, messaged them in early April. I then did a follow up e-mail at the end of May since I'm still waiting to receive what I paid for and was told that the issue was apparently tricky. It's now almost mid-June and I'm STILL waiting for something that I paid for at the end of March.

I understand glitches happen but honestly the lack of communication and wait time is unacceptable for paying customers. It's like this company is being ran as a side-gig by one person with a 9-5 job.

Edit: It's now October 2023 and I'm STILL waiting for the unlock I paid for back in March.

Edit 2: I decided to follow up, yet again, by messaging them a week and a half ago now. I've yet to receive any response back. It's now November and I'm still waiting on something I paid for in March.

A lot of you read on this company is hipe. The real truth is they don't care about you except to get your money. Most of it is basic and not high tech.
They're thieves and liars. They scam you and use unorthodox business practices
They use online family tree and info generating fake info.

They leave much to be desired. I doubt their claims are accurate and trust they fail doing accurate DNA testing as they claim. They base their reviews on misleading information.

. It's not about customer satisfaction but rather stealing their money. I ordered by mistake, refused their delivery, and their reply was we are charging $25.00 for your cancellation of the item. Which I did NOT agree to any of it.

I trust all of their claims are untrue and dishonest.

This company is on the more expensive side, but offer Y-chromosome (or Y-DNA), mitochondrial (or mtDNA) testing. The site can be frustratingly slow and difficult to navigate and could use a technology and perhaps graphic upgrade as well. My autosomal ethnicity results was fairly accurate for the most part comparable to my family tree. Also they offer a family tree format and even better FTDNA allows you to see your matches family tree when publicly posted.
