George J Howe Colombian Supremo whole bean coffee
This is a review of George J Howe medium roast whole bean Colombian Supremo coffee. I visited George Howes brick and mortar store in Grove City Pennsylvania. They have a unique store where you can purchase in bulk all of their coffee, candy and nut offerings. They fresh roast on premises both nuts and coffee. The coffee is stored in large self service hoppers and according to employees are filled several time per day. Commercial coffee grinders are available for customers to grind their coffee selection if they so choose. I purchased one pound of the Colombian Supremo and it was priced at $10.99/pound. This coffee is 100% Arabica beans and no other information was or is available. The fragrance of the whole beans was pleasant, sweet nutty cocoa like. Inspecting the beans I found a high-quality bean roasted to a medium roast in my opinion. I ground 66 grams to coarse-medium setting 12 on my Ollygrin BG710T conical burr grinder, or approximately 770 microns, again this coffee had a very pleasant sweet, nutty fragrance. This 66 gram dose was brewed with 1.2 liter of cold filtered water in a Cuisinart Pure Precision CPO-850 automatic pour over coffee maker.
The aroma from this coffee while brewing was pleasant but light. Upon cupping I found this coffee to have a similar aroma nutty and sweet, tasting this brewed coffee I found virtually no acidity, and a pleasant but not heavy mouth feel. This coffee was smooth and pleasant on the palate. The SCA rates coffees with a cupping score of 80 or higher as specialty grade coffees. Using their scoring system I rate this coffee at 90. George J Howe has been roasting coffee at this location since 1917 and this Colombian Supremo has been one their trademark specialty coffees. George J Howe's Colombian Supremo whole bean coffee makes a very fine cup of coffee worthy of your table at any time of day. I could not find anything to dislike about this coffee. It is just a solid cup of coffee. At a price of $10.99/pound this is a mid level price for coffee. Who is this coffee for, anyone who loves and enjoys a good up of coffee. I can recommend this coffee, it will not disappoint.
