We used Go Ask A Local to confirm information for an upcoming trip to Slovenia. Primož gave us a lot of great insights, potential places to stay and eat, and ideas on things to do. He was great in helping us set the broader itinerary so that we are not trying to fit too much in the time we have in country and so that we plan our route of travel in a logical manner. I would highly recommend these folks, and I will be using them again.

I was asked to fill out a rather extensive questionnaire before our consultation: It led me to believe that the $150 charge included the time prior to our meeting during which the consultant would review our requested travel styles, budget, places to stay etc... and provide a custom tailored consult. I could not tell that our consultant read the form I filled out or that she came prepared to help craft our trip.

Not only did it not feel custom, despite the fact that she was supposed to be a "specialist" in the Yucatan and Oaxaca, I did not feel the consultant had a handle on the areas we were asking about.. there was not even a cookie cutter approach to the consultation. For example:
When asking for either a specific hotel recommendation or an ideal location or area to find a hotel that was charming, walkable and small/locally owned, I was lucky to get one recommendation. She provided a referral for an online website for rentals, which is a resource that I could easily access on Air B&B or VRBO.

We learned a few details here and there but I did not have the impression that the consultant had resources at hand and certainly did not specialize in the Yucatan. She lives in Oaxaca and even there, the recommendations were vague: (eg she told us "there are nearby villages that do pottery, others that do weaving" etc..but I could not get the names of the villages from her for the most part and she could not explain transportation to get there or where to go once we arrived in a village. "Ask a Local" set up the expectation that the consultant had vast experience in designed trips, travel, accomodations that could be customized for individual budgets and travel styles and activity preferences. It rather felt like sort of a shot gun approach, a not well thought out or informative session that did not deliver on their advertised promotion.

UPDATE: I contacted "Ask a Local" and received a full refund. Appreciate this response from them. There was no personal note of apology or assurance that this is not their usual customer experience so I will likely not use them again

Discussing our Peru travel plans with Nicho was well worth the time and money. He helped me refine my tentative itinerary. He pointed out potential logistical hassles, and helped me set expectations around those. He gave me an excellent overview of towns and sites in the Sacred Valley, and around Paracas. I really liked how he pulled up Google Maps, shared his screen, zoomed in, and walked me through all the places I wanted to go, providing recommendations in line with the interests I expressed.

I feel much more confident about finalizing our Peru plans now, and I plan to use Go Ask a Local for future destinations as well. Thank you Nicho!!

I could tell he was listening to what we were seeking out on this trip and made suggestions that were very in line with what we wanted. The travel consultant was very helpful. Answered all my questions and when I was done I was that much more confident that our itinerary was spot on. Also gave me comfort about the VRBO we are renting. It is like having eyes on the ground.

Simone is such a lovely person! He was a great source of information on everything we wanted to know about Sardinia and planning our trip. He has in depth knowledge of the history and culture of the island, and the best areas to visit and stay. Highly recommended!

In the hour that we spent on a Zoom call we learned so much. In particular, he pointed out that trains ran well north of Lecce. Also that the best way to get from one point to another may not be the way that we were thinking.

With his great Italian sense of humour, he informed us on different walks, wineries, towns, etc. that we had no idea about.

The consultation was more than worth the price, and saved me a lot of difficulties and uncertainties. Sebastian was very knowledgeable, friendly, and had lots of great idea that make me even more excited for my trip than I had been (which is saying a lot!).

Well for one thing, Leanora accomplished and accommodated my last minute request for a consult. Then I was late for the call but join the others when I could. She was articulate, knowledgeable, admitted where she was not as knowledgeable about an area, but is sending us a name of a person to contact for further info if needed. She had so much information to share, sending emails also with lots of suggestions for the things I asked. It was so worth every dollar spent. I will use GO ASK A LOCAL again.
