2.5 Year Life Span - Optoma Projector

I purchased an Optoma UHD35x 4K UHD gaming projector (3,600 lumens, 240Hz, HDR10/HLG) expecting a reliable product for home use. Unfortunately, my experience has been disappointing—both with the product and the company behind it.

The first unit I received was defective out of the box and would not power on. It was replaced, but the replacement unit has now completely failed after about 2.5 years of normal household use and no longer powers on.

I contacted Optoma Technology, Inc. for support, but they declined to offer repair or replacement beyond a paid service, with no meaningful after-sales consideration.

Given the price and specifications of this projector, I would have expected significantly better durability, as well as stronger customer support when issues arise.

Based on my experience with two failed units and the lack of support, I cannot recommend this product or the company.

Cuidado con Optoma y sus actualizaciones

Tengo un proyector que funcionaba correctamente hasta que realicé una actualización oficial de firmware proporcionada por Optoma. Tras dicha actualización, el dispositivo quedó completamente inutilizado, sin posibilidad de uso alguno.

Este fallo no se debe a un uso indebido, manipulación incorrecta ni a daños externos. El problema se produjo única y exclusivamente como consecuencia de la instalación del firmware oficial de Optoma, lo que evidencia un grave defecto del producto o un software defectuoso distribuido por el propio fabricante.

GRAVE FALTA DE RESPONSABILIDAD Y SOPORTE DE OPTOMA ESPAÑA

He contactado en repetidas ocasiones con Optoma España para solicitar asistencia técnica y soporte en garantía. La respuesta ha sido inexistente o totalmente irresponsable:

No contestan a los correos ni al teléfono, y

En otras ocasiones se limitan a derivar la responsabilidad a terceras empresas, afirmando que Optoma España no se hace cargo, algo absolutamente inaceptable tratándose de la filial oficial del fabricante.

Esta actuación deja al consumidor completamente desprotegido, sin servicio postventa y con un proyector de gama alta, con menos de 1200 horas de uso, inutilizado por una actualización oficial de la marca.

Considero esta práctica engañosas y abusiva. No recomiendo en absoluto la compra de productos Optoma. Existen numerosos testimonios de usuarios afectados por problemas similares, fácilmente localizables en foros y reseñas públicas como Reddit, lo que indica que no se trata de un caso aislado, sino de un problema recurrente que la empresa no está resolviendo.

Entschuldigung, daß ein möglicher Kunde stört …

Tja, was soll man da noch sagen ?

Ein Telefonat mit dem Optoma-Support führte zu einer schriftlich formulierten technischen Frage am 18. August 2025.
Auch die schriftliche Nachfrage am 04. September 2025 ergab keinerlei Antwort.
Eine telefonische Nachfrage am 09. September 2025 führte zu der Antwort „der Techniker meldet sich bei Ihnen“.

Bis heute, 16. November 2025, keinerlei Rückmeldung.

Kunden scheinen bei Optoma lediglich ein Störfaktor zu sein …

Estafa

tiendaoptoma.es está denunciada ante la Policia Nacional y Consumo de la Junta de Andalucía por estafa, se quedarón con mi dinero. No entregaron el producto, ni factura. Pasó todos los tiempos legales para el reembolso y sigo sin la devolución (de más de 500€). Cuidado!!

Ik denk dat we een rechtszaak moeten starten tegen Optoma (Cinemax P2)



Ik wil even mijn frustratie delen en peilen of anderen ook problemen hebben gehad met hun Optoma Cinemax P2.

Mijn P2 hield er in december mee op – helemaal dood. Opgestuurd naar Optoma Duitsland. Diagnose: mainboard defect. Maar het apparaat was nét twee maanden buiten de garantie. Hun oplossing? Een kostenplaatje van €900.

Na drie maanden (!) over en weer bellen, mailen en pushen, heb ik uiteindelijk een deal kunnen maken: we delen de kosten, ieder de helft. Dus eindelijk gerepareerd, teruggestuurd, ik blij…

Maar: na een maand is het weer mis. Precies hetzelfde probleem. Alleen de backlight doet het nog.

Serieus… €450 betaald voor een “reparatie” die dus geen maand houdt. Dit kan toch niet? Ik overweeg serieus juridische stappen, of een collectieve actie als meer mensen dit probleem hebben gehad. Zijn er anderen hier met vergelijkbare ervaringen? Ik lees heel veel klachten allemaal de zelfde problemen

Tips of suggesties zijn welkom. Dit voelt echt als oplichting.

Questionable specs provided by the company and terrible attitude on the phone

My UHD51A projector finally quit on me. It was nothing but odd problems throughout the years of owning it. Research online also shows from professional testing equipment that the projector was not nearly as bright as was claimed by Optoma and after a period accumulating research, I finally understood why HDR and other visual aspects on the device were underwhelming. At one point, the frame interpolation stopped working. Picture settings kept randomly resetting. Lots of terrible dark and white crush. The 4K was never very impressive and HDR was barely effective. (I thought this was normal because it is a projector and not a TV) When I called in, a lot of pushback was offered when I tried to provide feedback as a former customer who was moving on to a different brand. Despite my clear expression that I was merely providing feedback after my experience with this model, they insisted that I should have brought this up during warranty and that their newer products would absolutely impress me. So according to the person in support, I had to have all the problems within a year in order to have any valid comments about the device and that I should take their word for it (again) that their newer products are now amazing. On a final note, my true purpose for calling was to ask them for some troubleshooting tips about why my projecting wouldn't start anymore despite replacing with a new lamp. I am suspecting the color wheel as faulty since a reference marker on it appears to have rubbed out but they refused to offer any sort of input and insisted that I send it in and pay a 150$ US diagnostic charge excluding labor and parts to get any further with them. They wouldn't even provide me with any information on where I could send it locally to have it repaired. Hard pass on Optoma going forward.

Do Not Buy Optoma products at all

My optoma projector CinemaX -P2, suddenly stopped showing any display. Laser was working but no display. I reached optoma service center in Pakistan as i live there.
To my surprise they simply refused and told contact USA ( As it was purchased there) I was not claiming any warranty just a repair but totally disowned the product by Optoma Pakistan due to reason that it was not purchased from their center. Not even on money. USA website is not giving option for my address. In view, I cannot avail any service of Optoma services center in Pakistan.

I regret buying from Optoma, what a pathetic customer support. Please save your hard earned money money and stop buying it from Optoma . Obviously Shame on me that I choose optoma for home theater.

Breaking devices and expensive repairs

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend Optoma devices. In December 2021, I bought an Oproma cinemax P2 laser projector. I actually started using it after moving in mid-January 2022. The equipment was advertised as a high-end and modern home entertainment center. Unfortunately, after about 8 months of use, the projector began to display "dead pixels". At that time, the laser operating time was about 1000 hours. The laser matrix was replaced at that time. In August 2024 (laser operating time was about 3800 hours), the device broke down again. The left side of the displayed screen first loses color and sharpness, and after some time it turns off completely. The service visit did not detect any faults. When the problem repeated, I sent a report to the service and received an email that it was a faulty formatter board, the replacement of which would cost about 600 euros (500 pounds), or 1/4 of the value of the entire projector. I described the entire problem to the service in my country and to the service in the UK. Unfortunately, the company's position remains unchanged - the warranty ended a few months ago, so the repair is chargeable. If I had bought a new TV back then, first of all, I would have spent less money and had the equipment for years. I could also have bought much cheaper equipment from Epson or Xiaomi and not lost a large sum of money. Huge disappointment.

[UPDATE 03.01.2025]

The issue has been solved. I am raising my rating to 3* because after intervention on social media and in several Optoma offices in different countries the matter was resolved. The projector was in repair (the third time) from 17.10 to 20.11 but the problem was fixed. It has not recurred to this day. I received an additional 3 months warranty for the repair.

A big thank you to Matt from the customer service of the UK office, who dealt with the whole matter and helped to resolve it.

[UPDATE 12.12.2025]

Broke down again! At first, it would "freeze" on the Optoma logo, then start up but display no image (the laser does power on), but it won't load the software. I've tried unplugging it, resetting it, and even updating the software via USB (following the instructions at optoma website for this device).

The device is out of warranty (it's exactly 4 years old), but I still can't believe that a device of this caliber, priced at this price, can't function for a year without failure or needing service. Completely useless and expensive.

You're rolling the dice with Optoma

The projector worked well until 13 months after purchase when a dark patch appeared in the upper left hand corner (see pics)... Amazon sent me to Optoma who ignored my emails. When I called they said the minimum cost of repair would be £150 just for shipping and diagnostics plus any costs for labour and parts. Optoma were curt with me and a quite rude and arrogant actually. I kicked up enough fuss with Amazon that they agreed to take it back for a refund but it took hours to get to that point. You can roll the dice with Optoma if you're feeling lucky but my advice would be to go with Epson or BenQ. Better quality products and superior customer service. Optoma, sadly, has become cheap tat with couldn't care less customer service.

I recently bought an refurbished OPTOMA…

I recently bought an refurbished OPTOMA UHD65 projector.
i usually avoid refurbs when it comes to projectors,but i thought i would try it since the price was reasonable from buydig.com.
and this was a factory refurbished unit.
well i have learned my lesson wont be doing that again.
the unit came dirty inside and out and the top covers looked like someone used it as a snow board.
buydig immediately offered a refund but i didn't want a refund i wanted a projector that wasn't beat to death.
this wasn't buydigs fault as they don't do anything but sell and ship,they have to take the manufacturers word for it.

so i emailed optoma and didn't get a reply of course,so i called and spoke with a nice lady who couldn't give me any information on their refurb process .
i kind of tripped her up alittle when i asked her if i had bought this projector new and sent it in for repair in the condition i described above would they honor the warranty she says no.
she then says because it came from optima this way, it would be covered under the 90 day warranty.
as i said above lesson learned i wont be buying any other optima products in the future.
i have only bought one other factory refurb out of all the projectors i have owned (jvc dila sony sxrd boxlight/sanyo lcd) and that was an Mitsubishi HC7000 lcd and it came over packaged and immaculate.
no scratches it was clean, you could not tell it wasn't new,
i still have and it still looks perfect.
