Patient Review Experience at the Prostate Clinic - Nigeria // KINGSLEY CHINEDU EKWUEME
Hi everyone.
I know you reading this has searched the internet looking for a review of The Prostate Clinic Nigeria (Lagos), spearheaded by Kingsley Ekwueme, here's an honest review.
The Clinic Setting:
The hospital is quite beautiful on the outside. The automatic sliding doors and solid air-conditioning are honourable mentions.
Pre-Operative Stage:
First, surgery is pricey, drugs are overpriced, and I noted considerable gaps in staffing and clinical support in key areas. There was no visible pharmacist for proper pharmacovigilance, and to me, that alone raises concerns about patient safety
Kingsley Chinedu Ekwemue (MD), in my personal experience, does not reply emails and does not communicate properly and courteously with patients. Again, I am speaking strictly from my own interactions - HE LACKS THE COMMUNICATION ETIQUETTE - which to me is a requirement for service in the medical profession. I had the impression that foreign training (UK and possible US exposure) would reflect in communication and patient management, but was fed utter disappointment.
Moving on, I was required to make a deposit of about ₦25,000,000 to ₦30,000,000 for just two admission nights. You will receive constant reminders that full payment must be made before surgical booking is validated. From my experience, surgeries were arranged and then rescheduled without proper or timely communication. A planned procedure could be pushed back by several days or even up to a month.
In addition, the hospital does not seem to respect timing or scheduling. From what I experienced, no one could clearly state the exact time of surgery. In my case, I was not properly informed when to begin pre-operative fasting, which caused major concern. In one case I was aware of, a patient whose surgery was rescheduled for about a month experienced progression of BPH to PCA during that delay. I saw the patient receive reduced attention and care. I cannot confirm the final outcome, so I will not speak further, but I want you dear reader to get the idea.
We were also given a PDF document containing what appeared to be general or AI-generated recovery instructions. This seemed to replace proper individualized post-operative care.
Post-Operative Care:
From my personal experience, I would rate the post-operative care 3/10. It was not a pleasant experience. Patient monitoring was not consistent. There was no regular wound inspection or dressing changes, and catheter care did not appear to be routinely done; one catheter will be worn without change, no backup medications to avoid their said goal in the PDF.
When we reported unbearable post operative discomfort, it was often dismissed as “normal" recovery. Even in cases of symptoms such as bright coloured bleeding, fever, severely painful urination, it was still described as "normal", they hardly solved any problem of sorted concern of complication - but dismissed it all. After protest, we were given blind prescription to manage the said symptoms - there was no physical examination before writing those prescription.
Additional Observation:
I noticed what appeared to be differences in the level of attention and responsiveness given to certain patients.
Whether this was due to familiarity, social status, personal relationships, or other factors. However, the inconsistency left me with the impression that not all patients received the same level of care and consideration. Patient care should be equitable, professional, and consistent regardless of background, ethnicity, social standing, or personal connections. Unfortunately, my experience did not always reflect that standard.
Final Verdict:
1. If you are going to the Prostate Clinic - Nigeria or working with Kingsley C. Ekwueme, make your bookings through a certified compliance lawyer. This may help protect you from being taken advantage of.
2. In my opinion, Kingsley Ekwueme values profit over people, which I consider an spit-on to the principles of medicine.
3. Please consider exploring federal hospitals in Nigeria and other options for your prostatectomy. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this clinic or urologist Ekwueme to anyone.
