Score for this provider should be zero. I had a very disappointing experience with Pulse energy. When the sales representative signed us up, we were promised a much cheaper cost per kWh. Later, the rate increased, and we were told that the lower rate had been given to us by mistake. That was not our error, yet we ended up paying more than what we had agreed to.

To make matters worse, our bills were not sent on time, which resulted in a large accumulated bill. Instead of taking responsibility for their billing issues, they blamed us for the outstanding balance.

When we decided to leave because of the poor service, we were also charged an early termination fee just to get out of the contract.

Overall, the customer service was poor, communication was lacking, and the entire experience left me feeling misled and scammed. I would not recommend this provider based on my experience.

Pulse Energy

Pulse Energy — a professional scam dressed up as a better deal.
Here's how the move works. A Pulse Energy rep knocks on your door, shows you your current electricity provider's pricing, and then shows you what they can offer. Looks good on paper. Looks cheaper. You sign up.
But here's the manipulation.
What they show you: Pulse's rates without GST, compared against your current provider's rates with GST already included. So they're showing you Pulse at 29.72 c/kWh anytime and 25.06 c/kWh controlled, versus Meridian at 31.29 c/kWh anytime and 25.93 c/kWh controlled. A clear saving, right? That's what you believe in the moment. That's what gets you to sign.
The reality: Strip GST out of both and compare apples to apples, straight from each company's own published pricing — Pulse's anytime rate is 29.72 c/kWh against Meridian's 27.21 c/kWh, and Pulse's controlled rate is 25.06 c/kWh against Meridian's 22.55 c/kWh. Pulse is actually MORE expensive by roughly 9–11% on usage. Add GST back onto both and the gap stays the same. So instead of saving money, you're paying more — for the exact same electricity flowing into your house. In my case, that worked out to around $37 a month extra, or roughly $441 a year. Your number will be different depending on your usage, but the direction is the same: more expensive, not less.
The $160 "joining credit" is the lure. It's applied entirely to your first bill, so that one bill looks cheap and you walk away convinced you made the right decision. By the time your second bill arrives and reality kicks in, you've already switched, already signed, and they've got you.
Now, the legal defence. Yes, somewhere in the Pulse agreement document, in the fine print, it does state: "Please note all rates above are exclusive of GST." Yes, technically that's disclosed. And yes, they can probably turn around and say it was my responsibility to read it. Fair enough — on paper.
But that's not what actually happened. What actually happened is this: a man came to my door, came into my house, sat down with me face to face, and told me he was going to save me money. He pulled up calculators in front of me and walked me through numbers he knew were manipulated. Electricity pricing in New Zealand is already confusing for the average person — between energy rates, network charges, retailer fees, daily charges, controlled versus uncontrolled meters, EA levies, GST treatment — most consumers genuinely cannot tell you what their actual cost per unit is. I'm an uninformed customer, in an industry that doesn't explain itself clearly, being shown manipulated numbers by a salesman who knew exactly what he was doing. And what he was doing was getting the sale, regardless of whether it was actually in my interest.
Fine print or no fine print, the entire sales pitch was a lie. The promise was savings. The reality is I'm paying more. Who, on any day of the week, in their right mind, would knowingly sign up for a more expensive electricity provider — even for $160 off the first month? Nobody. And that's exactly why they have to hide the truth to make the sale.
Avoid Pulse Energy.

prices were ok

prices were ok, but their onboarding and general customer service is non-existent.
I've since had reason to leave and again contacting them on their customer.care email is blocked, looking at emails to them last year they are still unread, I looked in their sales team, also unread from last year and last week. Found the resolutions email, also unread.
I know I could phone them, but I'm leaving anyway so I don't care, but I don't like poor customer service, if they are going to send me an email, then not read my response, or ignore my messages entirely, that is non-existent customer service.

Stay the hell away from this company!!

They tried to bill me based on their estimates from the previous householder. HUGE BILLS came my way which I refused to pay. I had started filling their direct debit form online, but never completed it or submitted it. Next minute they are helping themselves to my bank account!! I had to go to my bank to put a bar on Pulse. I sent them my photographic evidence of the meter when I moved in - they refused to accept it as has no meter ID (old analogue). But a meterman showed me that it clearly has an ID - very visible in the photos) but Pulse obviously don't know this. Since then all I get are random numbers thrown into a bill inspite of 3 actual ( meter man ) readings which corroborate my very low power usage. I have spent hrs on deliquent people who should not be anywhere near a business. The people they employ are THE MOST STUPID and INCOMPETENT I have ever known. I will be reporting Pulse co. to the ComCom for their disgraceful, incompetent and deceptive behaviour and conduct.

I talk with this guy, he is a frank & elegant person, He guided me with the power which was a good deal for me. I like his punctuality as well. Although I definitely want to join, due to my current existing contact, I cannot do at this moment. In the long run I'll join the pulse energy.

Support sucks

Support sucks - be prepared to spend an hour or so getting angrier while they hem and haw, and try to cut the session.
Beware of the sign-up bonus - it's all-or-nothing, so if you leave within 12 months, you lose the entire bonus.

Actual scam, don't sign ANYTHING

I made it very very clear to the rep that knocked on my door that I was not definitely looking to switch to pulse, and would do my own research and get back to him. He told me that I would receive an email, that, if I didn't want to switch, I should simply ignore and they wouldn't go ahead with signing me up. They went ahead with signing me up anyway. Actual scammers.

This company is pure day light ROBBERY…

This company is pure day light ROBBERY I have been charged $860 this month , only 4 people live in my house and we only use the average household etc washing machine and heater … my first month with them was low and then it kept doubling an extra $200-$300 a month

Deceptive Company

Deceptive Company, very dogey dealings, trick you into thinking you are going to get better prices, talk you into signing stuff saying a representive will contact you to discuss, but its actually an agreement you sign and they change your power company to theirs. I have demanded a cancellation of the Agreement but they have not responded, BEWARE

LIARS

LIARS! Just read everyone else’s reviews and we are on the same page. They offer you something appealing when they door knock but once the bills start coming through they’re charging close to $500 a month for power. They charge for all sort of different services and fees.

Daylight Robbery

Hands down the most expensive power company. DO NOT SIGN UP! Was with this power company for 4 months and our bill doubled with each month despite a conscious effort from us to decrease our power usage. Final bill payment was $1056, our previous company charged us approximately $300 a month.

This company should not be allowed to operate in NZ and the commerce commission should investigate.

Should have known better!

Similar story, knocked on the door and offered an excellent controlled and uncontrolled rate. Was substantially cheaper than my existing rates but our power account increased by approx $100 a month. Didn't investigate why, gave them the benefit of the doubt until the 2nd month invoice arrived, almost identical to the first month. Gone back to my original company, where is Fair Go now?
