A great bookish treat!
I've now received two boxes from Books That Matter and I've loved them both! The box arrives quickly, and the books are in perfect condition. I like the inclusion of bookmarks - you can never have too many! The other gifts are carefully chosen and cater to a wide audience (vegan treats that everyone can enjoy!). I would definitely recommend!
The best book subscription box out there
I was originally gifted a 3-month subscription to Books That Matter and immediately renewed when it was up. The book boxes are beautifully packaged, contain loads of fantastic items from independent and/or ethical businesses and, most importantly, have some fantastic reads. Honestly couldn't believe it when I opened my last box to see the latest Sally Rooney book - blown away! An amazing business that I'm happy to support and recommend.
Increasingly disappointed
Used to have a year round subscription in 2020 but now only buy boxes that appeal to me. However, I have been getting increasingly disappointed in the content of the boxes. There’s only so many postcards, posters and tote bags one can have. For £17 + postage, I’m better off getting the book at a bookstore.

We received the Brave Girls Book Club…
We received the Brave Girls Book Club box and my daughter loves it! Really looking forward to the next one coming.
WELL WORTH IT
Books that matter boxes are consistently high quality with some excellent choices of books which often bring me outside my comfort zone. Would recommend to anyone interested in feminist literature. I've been getting these for a year and a half or so, and in all that time there's not been a single disappointment. 5 stars!
Absolutely love receiving my box every…
Absolutely love receiving my box every month. I really enjoy the books and the gifts and snacks are always beautifully curated
One-off Sally Rooney box
I ordered a one-off box for the Sally Rooney special. This is my first time purchasing with Books That Matter and I’m so impressed with the box I received. It’s decently sized, recyclable and definitely worth the price for the contents I received: hardback book, bookmarks, a tote bag, sweet treats and a little booklet. In fact, it’s actually an unbelievable price, I would certainly pay more. The contents were presented / organised well, and overall, I’m very happy with it!
Worth the secrets!
Never know what you receive but you know it will be amazing and something you’ve never read before. This has opened my preferences for books and also who to support in the small business world.
Such a great monthly treat
I'm always so impressed by the quality of the boxes- just when I think I won't bother renewing my subscription again I get sucked back in by another great theme. It's definitely helping me read more, in varieties and genres I wouldn't necessarily choose for myself but always end up enjoying!
No added extras
Dissapointed with the box I received, ordered before the full details of what the box included but with the description, marketing and social media coverage then expectations were higher. The Sally Rooney box was to include exclusive merch, but was disappointed that it was the same things given away at no additional cost in bookstores like Waterstones. So it didn’t include anything other than some dairy free snacks compared to what was available on launch day. On that learning, I’d suggest purchasing after an unboxing to make sure you want to receive that.

Nice little treat but no wow factor
I ordered the Sally Rooney book box and it was a nice little treat to myself but nothing special. In the box I had some bookmarks, print things, a tote bag, some vegan chocolates, and the book. The presentation was lovely and I really appreciate that the chocolates were vegan (I was worried I'd receive sweets that I couldn't eat!) but I just think there wasn't much wow factor to the box. I definitely liked the box and will use the gifts inside but not sure I'll sign up for another box anytime soon as I think if it's a book I'm not bothered about it probably won't be worth it.
Disappointing Women's Prize Box
I've previously had a short subscription to BTM and found it nice enough, if a little too "young" for me (there are lots of postcards/bits of card with girl boss slogans on).
I didn't continue because I didn't feel it was great value for me personally, even though the book selection was varied and good.
However, over the summer I decided to treat myself to one of their one-off boxes - the Women's Prize for Fiction box. This was hyped/sold on their social channels as being a really special box that would include exclusive women's prize goodies on top of all six books. It was not cheap - I think £85 plus postage - but it was a present to myself. You had to pay upfront and order the box blind, trusting that the contents would be as nice as they were suggesting.
But when it came to the box arriving... Well, that was the first issue - there were problems with delivery and it came much later than originally suggested (and communication from BTM was not at all good on this front). Then when it finally arrived it was so underwhelming...yes all six books were in there, but a couple were in what seemed like a weird airport-style paperback form (i.e even though the book wasn't yet available in paperback they'd got some special/weird edition of it instead of the hardback). I expected a paperback when the book was already available in that format - e.g Brit Bennet - but it was especially disappointing for Unsettled Ground, as I'd been looking forward to a beautiful hardback edition of that.
Then...the extra "goodies". Um, I've no idea where these exclusive Women's Prize treats were. I'd very naively hoped the box might include the WP journal or a mug (which they sell on the WP site). All there was, was a` bookmark saying "read women" (no women's prize mention/branding on it) and a couple of postcards advertising BTM (so flyers, basically). So no "exclusive" Women's Prize goodies at all. The treats were a couple of vegan chocolate things that I know appeared on one of their recent subscription boxes too, suggesting they might have been leftovers.
It wasn't even in a nice box/packaging. It all just felt really disappointing and bad value for money - especially when it had been advertised as being a really exciting/special box. I really wish I'd gone into my local indie and bought the books there instead.
I think the monthly box scheme is decent enough if you're a young female reader who likes getting stuff in the post - at least they give you a chance to see what's in the boxes on their social media before you order - but I personally would steer clear of one-off boxes like this, which are poor value for money. I certainly wouldn't take a chance on ordering one again without knowing exactly what was going to be in it for the considerable £££.
I respect what they are trying to do as a small female-run business, and so hope they take this feedback on board.

Amazing!!
I gifted a box to a friend for their birthday and was so pleased with everything about Books That Matter!
The box itself was very well received and my experience with ordering and delivering couldn’t have been better. The process was easy and the delivery was speedy. Shout out to the excellent customer service team who were very helpful throughout. 5 stars all round, I’ll certainly be coming back for more!!
Underwhelming book box, unhelpful customer support.
I decided to try the subscription on the 19th of a month, not realising that they automatically take payment for the next month on the 20th. This meant that in the span of two days they took £40 from me. I was not expecting this. All of my other subs email at least 48 hours prior to taking payment. I emailed asking them to cancel the second payment (the subscription box will not be sent out for a while) and they refused citing issues with logistics. They suggested that I “gift the box to a friend”.
Here is the thing: the box I received wasn’t very good at all. Certainly not something I would gift to anyone. For £20 there was book that is currently £7 on amazon, a strange single-layer polyester facemask and a plain net shopping bag. There was also a travel-size foot spray (it’s okay, probably wouldn’t buy it), a cheaply printed bookmark and a little booklet/magazine thing.
There really are better book boxes out there, that are much better value for money and have better customer service when things go wrong. Shop around a bit before you pick this one. I really regret giving them my money.
Edit: I’ve since received my second (and thankfully final!) box from this company: the latest Sally Rooney best seller, a flimsy tote bag and some chocolate-covered chickpeas (honestly so grim, haha) It’s just not my cup of tea, I’m afraid. I hope others have a better experience with them!

Love everything about Books that Matter
I absolutely love my Books the Matter subscription! After signing up for two 3 months periods I decided 12 month subscription was the way to go. Every month you get a wonderfully curated box filled items themed around that months book which always has a feminine link. The book is often a new release in paperback from authors I haven’t heard of, on topics I wouldn’t usually read and that’s great! I always love the gifts, they range from edible treats, toiletries, accessories, stationary and artwork all from independent female suppliers and artists.
A diverse and immersive reading box…
I have been a subscriber now for over 18 months! I can honestly say that I have loved every box. Each month the book and gifts are carefully curated to ensure an enjoyable reading experience. It brightens my day when I get home to a new box and I enjoy reading a wide range of books. Books that matter have helped me to find such wonderful and diverse books across this time. I really could not recommend them any more
Great Surprise!
I loved the Books That Matter subscription! To be honest, I didn't love the idea of a subscription as I'm not usually into all the books that are trendy at the moment, but I found that having one book per month that was chosen by someone else a lovely change -- and many time a pleasant surprise! All the treats and fun things that come with the book are also a great plus which makes you get in the mood to read. Highly recommended!
First box is a big hit!
My box only arrived on Sunday and I’ve already read over half of the fabulous book, painted my nails with the beautiful polish, starting using the (totally natural) stunning smelling soap, written and sent the cards and drank the lush colour changing tea! (It’s Monday)
I appreciate it must be very difficult to keep all subscribers happy all the time as everyone has very different tastes. But I feel like this ‘Feminist Utopia’ themed box was made just for me!
I will be sure to post another review in three months time. I am very confident they will be just as good though.
Thank you ‘Books That Matter’ you are awesome in my book!

Disappointed.
Signed up two weeks ago, been charged for both June and July boxes but not received anything.
Customer support told me I should have a tracking link (I don't) and not sure if I'll actually ever receive anything associated.
Disappointed.

Total disappointment
Tried to order a subscription and was told it would arrive repeatedly. It didn’t. Customer service was rude when I contacted them. It was just a really upsetting experience when I’d been so looking forward to signing up.
