Poor communication and goods held to ransom

If you want to run the risk of being slapped with additional charges prior to delivery (on top of the many thousands of pounds you have already parted with) with your goods being held to ransom until they are paid, John Mason is the company to book for your international move.

I was a repeat customer with John Mason having previously used their services with no issues. However with my most recent move, I was absolutely disgusted with their behaviour and how I was treated. They truly have no concept of decent customer service or how to communicate with their customers.

My most recent move was Australia-UK. Due to the road being too narrow for the container vehicle to deliver my goods directly to the house in the UK, I was advised I would need to pay an additional £420 for a ‘shuttle service’ (for my goods to be transferred from the container into a Luton van before then being delivered to the house).

I was surprised to suddenly be presented with this additional charge because I had not been charged an extra fee for a Luton van delivery for my previous move with John Mason (and using the same Australian removalists).
My contract paperwork with the Australian removalists was identical for both journeys and specified that the total charge paid would include delivery to my address. There was no clause in the paperwork stating that an additional fee may be charged for delivery of my goods, and there was no mention that a ‘shuttle service’ may be needed which could incur additional charges.

Then ensued a lengthy back and forth of emails with various people at John Mason as I questioned this charge. No one in the Liverpool office could provide me with an explanation as to why I had not been charged this fee for the previous move, yet was being charged it this time. It was only eventually after many many emails and a telephone call that they stated they had spoken to the Australian removalists and that I must have been charged a ‘warehouse handling fee’ for the first journey as this had included a car move along with my goods. Nowhere in my paperwork could I see mention of a warehouse handling fee. John Mason emailed me a ‘copy and paste’ message that they said had been sent from the Australian removalists regarding the ‘warehouse handling fee’ for the first move.

They then offered some bizarre suggestions as some sort of ‘workaround’ which were simply ludicrous. One suggestion included me hiring a van at my own expense and going to the warehouse to pick up my goods myself. Why would I come to collect 147 boxes when I have already paid a charge for the removals team to do this transfer?? That’s what I have paid John Mason for…
Another suggestion included the removals team bringing the container vehicle and the Luton van to a wider nearby street (rather than the warehouse) to offload my goods from the container into the Luton van before then being driven round to my address. I questioned if this would still incur a charge, which they confirmed would be the case. Right..so what is the point of that idea then?

Meanwhile during this back and forth of emails to clarify the additional charge, John Mason continued to send repeated emails threatening me with the risk of incurring further ‘quay rent’ and ‘container demurrage’ fees if my goods were left at the quay due to John Mason’s refusal to collect my goods until the charge was paid.
With this, their aim is to back you into a corner and exert maximum pressure until you pay whatever charge it is they are demanding. A disgraceful way to treat their customers who have entrusted them with many thousands of pounds to transport their precious worldly goods.

John Mason bluntly stated that they would not deliver my goods until the charge had been paid. How dare they treat their customers like this and essentially hold their goods to ransom?
This was all going on at a time when a close relative had just undergone major surgery, and I did not need any additional stress or disputes like this at that time.

To this date, I have still seen no written evidence/paperwork/contract stating that a warehouse handling fee had been charged for my first move, or any clause advising that additional charges could be presented at a later date. They introduced a charge at the last minute that they could not substantiate or show proof of in any written contract or paperwork that had been agreed between myself and the Australian removalists.

I would absolutely NOT recommend using John Mason at all under any circumstance, based on my experience.

Thank you for your review, although we are disappointed by your comments given the detailed communication and explanation already provided.

To clarify for anyone reading this: you booked your international move through Allied Pickfords in Australia, not directly with John Mason International. We were appointed as the UK delivery agent by Allied, and our role was to handle your goods once they arrived in the UK.

On reviewing your property, it became immediately clear, as it had in previous moves, that the road outside your home is not wide enough for a 40 foot articulated container vehicle to access safely. Parking a container lorry outside your address would completely block the road and create a safety hazard for other residents and vehicles.

We are more than happy to share Google Street View images of the road in question with anyone who is unsure about this. The reality is that direct container delivery to your address is not operationally possible, and the only safe solution is to offload the container at our Liverpool depot and deliver to your address using smaller vehicles. This is a standard industry approach known as a shuttle service.

This shuttle requirement was not included in the rate you agreed with Allied, and when we flagged this with them, they confirmed that they had not accounted for access restrictions or shuttle handling in their cost. They instructed us to raise the charge directly with you, as it fell outside of their quoted scope.

We explained this situation in full and also invited you to check directly with Allied for clarification, as you repeatedly referenced their paperwork. You were unwilling to accept that the shuttle service was not included in the rate you had paid them, despite their confirmation to us.

It is also worth adding that the shuttle charge was reduced from our standard rate as a gesture of goodwill, recognising you as a returning customer. The amount covered only the cost of vehicle use, handling, and labour. It was not a profit making charge.

As for your suggestion that your goods were “held to ransom”, we must respectfully challenge this. Like all international movers, we operate under strict shipping line timeframes. Containers can only remain at port free of charge for a few days before daily quay rent and demurrage fees start accruing. We were transparent about this from the outset and simply highlighted the urgency in order to avoid you incurring unnecessary costs.

It is always difficult for us as the UK delivery agent when a customer has been promised something by the overseas company they booked with that hasn’t been included in the scope or cost of the move. As a repeat customer of John Mason International, you previously booked with us directly and were clearly happy with the service at that time. When customers book directly with us, we strive to ensure all charges are included up front and clearly explained in advance. Unfortunately, not all moving companies overseas take the same approach, and that can lead to confusion and frustration.

Disappearing Act

We booked our move from US to UK through Schumacher Logistics, who subsequently used John Mason for the UK end. What a mistake. Delivery was supposed to be included, but seeing as the parking was 3 doors down, they charged a £200 'long carry' fee. Took months to get an actual delivery booked in and now I'm sitting here, 4.5hrs after they were meant to arrive waiting. Took the morning off work and no sign or communication. Dreading what state the contents will be in when they arrive. Do yourself a favour and avoid at all costs.

To clarify for you and others reading this: your move was booked through your chosen overseas mover, Schumacher Logistics, who subcontracted John Mason International to handle delivery within the UK. We did not manage or control the overseas portion of your move, but were appointed to complete the final leg once your shipment reached the UK.

Your container arrived into port on 2nd May and was delivered to our depot on 9th May. Customs clearance was confirmed on 12th May. At this point, we advised Schumacher (your moving company) that a long carry fee would apply due to the delivery point being 44 metres from the vehicle, over twice the standard 20-metre allowance. This was communicated to your agent on four separate occasions between 7th and 29th May, with confirmation to invoice you received on the 29th. You were informed directly on 2nd June, and after disputing the charge, you accepted and paid it on 9th June.

Your delivery was then scheduled and completed within 12 working days - well within standard timeframes.

On the day, while your delivery window was set between 9–11am, our communication (sent the day prior) clearly stated this was “traffic permitting.” Unfortunately, our crew encountered several road incidents and diversions that delayed multiple deliveries that day. We understand this caused inconvenience, and we regret that you were not contacted sooner with an update, but these delays were entirely outside of our control.

Your review suggests a lack of communication or ownership. In fact, the delay to delivery stemmed from the time taken to confirm and settle charges incurred due to your property’s access, and then from real-time traffic disruption. Our responsibility was to deliver your goods as soon as possible once the required payment was received - which we did.

We’re sorry your experience didn’t reflect the smooth service we strive for, but it’s important to make clear where the actual issues lay.

A potentially complicated legacy move UK to Canada made simple.

In a small move of some legacy furniture from Plungar Notts to Canada, John Mason and their Canadian affiliate AMJ Campbell were terrific to deal with from Stem to Dudgeon . They were very cost competitive, their people extremely helpful, pleasant to deal with and provided a faultless actual move with very professional and safe packaging which was easy to handle with no damage at all.
Thanks to all of Michelle Shaw : Gill Kelley in England and Sonali Datey of AMJ Campbell in Canada guiding me through customs clearance ; you made it easy for a complete amateur to make this move simple and easy. Great Job.

I highly recommend working with John…

I highly recommend working with John Mason International. This was the first time using international container movers and tbh was quite daunting - I had been in touch with another company that my sister had used but then thought I should check other companies. I put out a quote on some random moving site and was overwhelmed with companies emailing me back and what's-apping me. It seemed a bit fishy but then I got a very nice email from Natalie with John Mason - I noticed their quote was considerably less than the other company I had been talking to. When I responded to her I was met with a very friendly banter and great customer service. I was down to deciding between Doree Bonner and John Mason as both companies were very courteous and similar fees. I went with John Mason simply because the deposit and insurance agreement was a little bit simpler and they could allow for cancellations without charging up to 3 days before which gave me peace of mind. My circumstance of moving back to Canada was wrought with heavy emotions and uncertainty but Chris Turton my moving representative handled everything very well, putting me at ease. Kieran, the mover that came to pick up my things at Big Yellow Storage also assured me that people move back and forth all the time and that my possessions were in good hands. They did a fantastic job and my boxes, bike, and instruments arrived just over 4 months later from the pick up date in London to Calgary Canada. AMJ Van lines in Canada also had great customer service for the most part. If there was a lag, I would email Chris and they would be in touch with me the next day. There was one small box missing from my shipment but when I inquired, it was then found in Toronto and was promptly sent to me a week later. One of my guitars cracked a few places in the finish due to humidity changes and two glass objects broke (one wine glass and one small vase). Even though I had full insurance the estimated value of my broken goods was not over the £250 (was just shy of), so this was a little bit frustrating after taking the time to fill out the insurance forms and not be able to get the replacement value back. Make sure you read the ins and outs of those forms before submitting and be sure to put the proper value for things that you think might be at higher risk of damage. I will be moving back to London again soon and now will have less anxiety shipping things overseas again due to having such a great experience with John Mason. The movers in Calgary with AMJ were also really great. Kudos to them. If you have paid for a full unpack however make sure that you tell them. They will take all the boxes with them as well.

Moving is a stressful experience, especially when shipping things internationally so other than a few little things I would say I had a perfect experience with John Mason. I will use them again soon.

Highly recommended

The whole process was easy and super straightforward. The communication was clear, with quick responses from the team. The packing team was particularly nice and careful. Great value for money too! Highly recommended.

Moving from Canada…

Moving from Canada was somewhat complicated. John Mason International Movers were in regular contact with me. Keeping me updated on what was happening with my delivery. The movers were professional and friendly. Everyone that I dealt with was helpful and took away a lot of the stress of the big move.

Efficient & professional

This is the second time I am using their services. The first time was from within the UK once my items were shipped internationally. This time they will be shipping items overseas for me. The lads did a fantastic job packing our things in high quality boxes.

Cheshire to Melbourne

Cheshire to Melbourne, the whole process was flawless! I chose John Mason due to being the best price with positive reviews.
Comms was perfect.
Packing service were fantastic and thorough.
Shared container - didn't have to wait too long in storage.
Tracking was great.
Australian delivery and unpacking team were perfect as well.
Can not fault any part of the process.

I can only offer praise for the service from John Mason.

I can only offer praise for the service that I have received from John Masons so far. Moving in itself is so stressful, never mind an international move. Having completed the first part of this process, I can say that everything has been well organised and each area works together like a team to support the client. Whenever I had concerns they made time to go over things and clarify the process and make sure I was getting the best service. A special thanks to Craig, who has made time to go over things with me and make changes and support me. He along with Gill have followed through to make this as smooth a process for me as possible when there were unexpected challenges my side. They have made me feel supported and a valued client. Also to the packing team, Phil, Martin and Lee, who did an excellent job. I am sure everything will arrive safely. They worked together as an experienced team and very efficient. Also to Natalie for getting the process started and Chris who responded to my call and got me the relevant information for the packing team. I am constantly made to feel at ease in my choice to make this move with John Masons. I look forward to getting through the next stages of this process, knowing I am in good hands and confident in my choice.

The whole process was very smooth

The staff was very responsive to my questions, making communication easy and smooth. The customer's requirements and any additional charges were clearly outlined.
