We went to see the scooter I had my eye on,LUPIN, the scooter is exactly what I need and I was given ample time to try it outside. Lauren was super helpful and knowledgeable, so we bought it then and there!

Only one fault with this model

I purchased a Lupin folding mobility scooter from them and it has changed my quality of life so much I look forward to going on holiday now with my scooter there is only one fault is it doesn’t have a key to operate it so have to remove the battery when out and about I have to use a cable lock to isolate the front wheel to the frame which is annoying as it involves carrying this and there’s no basket to put it in.

Incorrectly advertised so heavy we…

Incorrectly advertised so heavy we can’t lift it and doesn’t fit in our car as we are disabled we didn’t even open it for a few weeks when we did we found these issues that Betty and Bertie seem to have not really explained how heavy it is and now want nothing to do with us as we used it once it’s no good to us as we bought it on there recommendations and they say well sell it on then do not buy off these people the after care is none existent

Weight and Specifications: The Ren’s weight of 28kg is detailed on our website, in the product manual, guides, and our instructional videos. The scooter was designed to handle various terrains and steeper inclines while supporting a higher weight capacity. To achieve this power, the Ren includes two motors, making it heavier than our Lupin model, which has a single motor.

14-Day Trial Period: We offer a 14-day trial period so customers can test the scooter and ensure it fits in their car and meets their needs. Since you purchased the scooter in June, you were eligible for this trial period, during which you could have returned the scooter if it was unsuitable. Additionally, if medical or personal reasons had prevented you from testing it within that timeframe, we encourage customers to reach out so we can discuss potential extensions. Unfortunately, we did not receive any communication during this period, which indicates to us you are happy with the product.

Return Policy: As noted in our terms and conditions, we do not buy back scooters outside the trial period. Since the return period for your purchase ended almost five months ago, we’re unable to accept the scooter back.

As a small team at Betty and Bertie, we strive to offer thorough support and guidance to our customers, and we're disappointed to hear of your experience. While we are unable to make an exception to our return policy in this case, we hope this response helps clarify the rationale behind our product design and policies.

At Betty & Bertie, we have strict anti-fraud policies in place to protect both our customers and our business. When your order was placed, it flagged multiple security alerts within our system, which prompted us to review it carefully.

Prior to cancelling the order, my colleague contacted you to discuss these issues and explain why we might need to take this action. Although your payment for the scooter was received, certain discrepancies suggested a higher risk of a potential chargeback if the payment card details were not fully accurate. Unfortunately, we have previously encountered cases where stolen cards have been used to purchase our products, resulting in significant financial loss.

To resolve this, we refunded the full payment amount to you and offered alternative, secure payment options, such as PayPal, to ensure a safe transaction for all parties. While these situations are rare, when flagged by our system, they must be taken seriously, and we cannot proceed until the transaction is fully verified.

We apologise for the disappointment this has caused and appreciate your understanding of the precautions we must take to ensure secure shopping for everyone. If you’d like to proceed with the purchase using an alternative payment method, our team would be more than happy to assist you.

The scooter is dangerous

Update 3 Sept 2024 to my earlier review of Betty & Bertie.

Re the earlier issue, Betty& Bertie finally replied to an email, claiming the previous emails had gone in to junk. I am sceptical, but once a customer service person (Lauren) became involved, things were quickly resolved. Lauren arranged for the collection and repair of the scooter (the technician was able to replicate the error) and the scooter was returned to me promptly (a day before we went on holiday), ensuring I had use of it on my holiday. All in all I will give benefit of the doubt. Lauren was certainly efficient once she became involved.

Since then I have had 4 weeks of problem free journeys. That is, until yesterday (2 Sept 2024).

I had a day out at Alton Towers with my wife, son and a few of his friends. Mid way through the afternoon I was sat on the scooter waiting for my wife to bring over an ice-cream, when the scooter suddenly shot off under its own steam. I nearly fell off, such was my surprise, and the scooter almost hit a mother and her (very) small child - what a disaster that could have been!

Thereafter the scooter would continue trying to zoom off on its own accord, with no input (i.e. turning of the throttle from me) or, occasionally, do the same as before and not respond at all to the throttle being turned.

I have just switched it on again today in my garage. Within two or three seconds the scooter twitched a little and then moved forwards, again with no input from me - I was sat back recording it on my phone! Switched it off and then switched it back on and the same thing happened, again recorded.

I have reported the issue to Betty & Bertie by email and also contacted them by phone, speaking again to Lauren. The initial response from Lauren has been positive, but she has had to refer it to a director. Hopefully the end result will also be to my satisfaction. If that is the case I shall report it here.

Unfortunately, even if all resolved to my satisfaction, it does not hide the simple fact that in my experience the scooter is not only not fit for purpose, it is potentially very dangerous!

I could have badly hurt the small child in the incident above, which would have been terrible. But I also think, what if I hadn't gone to Alton Towers yesterday? It was going to happen sometime, so if we hadn't gone to Alton Towers my wife and I would have taken our usual evening walk with the dogs. Maybe I would have been sitting on the scooter at a curb's edge, waiting for traffic to pass before I crossed the road. What if the scooter had chosen that moment to shoot forward in front of a car, lorry, tractor (we live in the countryside)....

The scooter is clearly unreliable, but it is also potentially very dangerous. I strongly recommend against buying it.
