Just started the Lend with Care process and up to now all seems to be okay. Had a small amount of feedback which has been useful, but need more time to see if my investment actually helps someone.

Inspiring experience
I was inspired to invest in Lendwithcare from seeing an ad in The Big Issue. I was impressed by the idea of providing funds to help people in deprived communities establish businesses and enrich their lives and those of their community.
It was easy and straightforward to sign up and excellent bios were available for all the potential people to invest with. It was hard to make a choice as so many great projects to select from! I have made my first investment but definitely plan to invest in other projects soon!

Great concept
Quite new to this idea of loans to people who really want to help themselves. Nothing negative so far, I find this concept of loaning to individuals and hearing their back stories so refreshing. Communication from Lendwithcare has been at the correct level. I would totally rate this organisation as one of the very top poverty battlers in the world today. Keep up the great work.

Great idea, well run and overall a very positive experience.
Overall, I think this is a fantastic idea. It is a dignified idea. I have got most of the small amount that I put in back, and I try to top it up occasionally. I've been doing microloans for a couple of years now. Because I understand that people can do their best but still fail, I only loan what I can afford to lose... but as I said, most people have managed to pay back, which allows me to loan a bit more.
My only issue with Lendwithcare is all the emails I get asking me to donate... LEND with care is something I support passionately. Give with care is not what this is about, surely? Please quit with the begging emails.

We can only apologise if you feel that our emails asking for donations are on the heavy side, but we would like to assure you that we are conscious of this and aim to keep these types of asks to a minimum where possible. However, 100% of everything loaned through Lendwithcare goes to support small business owners. Because we don't take a percentage to cover the operational costs of Lendwithcare, support through donations is very necessary to ensure we can continue facilitating loans and providing this support. Thank you so much again for your support.

I would love to help those less fortunate in the world and think ‘lend with care’ is such a great idea but… I can’t be part of an organisation where the CEO earns over 120k as an annual salary (2023) Obviously some of that comes from what should go to those I want to help. I wish there were a non- profit organisation with CEO’s taking a good salary but not an unnecessarily high one. Not right in any level…

As you have rightly observed, Lendwithcare is a project of CARE International UK, and the level of pay for this post is correct. Before going into detail on this, we would like to make it clear that 100% of everything loaned through Lendwithcare goes directly to the entrepreneurs you choose to support. While we do ask for a voluntary donation to support CARE International UK (and indeed Lendwithcare's operational costs), lenders can also choose to opt out from this.
Our CEO's pay remains well below the market rate for most UK charity directors (in 2022 the median salary for Chief Executives at the UK’s largest 100 charities was £170,000) and well below most executive salaries in the public and private sector. CARE International UK firmly believes that our Chief Executive’s salary reflects her knowledge, skills, and extensive experience of international development, offering valuable guidance to ensure that Lendwithcare positively impacts the lives of more hard-working entrepreneurs year on year.
Fantastic organisation
Fantastic organisation, yes sometimes there are small loses but overall you get most of your money back to reinvest. Ive lent money over 100 times, only had 1 default and lost £45 in currency fluctuations.
I'm in it to help people so it doesn't bother me. I currently have about 65 loans running.
It's a great idea to help people help themselves.

Loved the idea and the two ladies I…
Loved the idea and the two ladies I gave money to grow their businesses, got payments every month from them and when I was told they had repaid their loan, I was delighted and thought to help someone else, I would keep it going but my account balance said currency overseas charges cost me £7.00. I will not be investing again. I only invested £15.00 for each lady. Good wishes to the ladies and I hope their businesses are flourishing. Lend to Care should advertise that money invested is open to currency changes.

You have raised an important issue, but it is import to note here that the loss you are referring to is caused by local currencies dropping in value against GBP rather than any hidden exchange rate charges. In most instances, changes in local currency are only small, which in turn results in an equally small loss to lenders. However, in November 2023, the value of the Malawian Kwacha dropped significantly, which unfortunately resulted in a larger than expected loss for lenders supporting loans in Malawi. In this instance, the currency devaluation has resulted in a real impact on low-income households struggling to make ends meet in Malawi, which highlights why we don't pass on any currency risk to entrepreneurs supported through Lendwithcare. We are working to make this complex issue much clearer to lenders, which includes providing information in the account area you have referenced in your review. The loss you have detailed in your review is much larger than usual, and we would like to look into this for you. Disappointing to read of lending partner charges
I'm really quite disappointed to read some of the reviews around interest charged on the money I lend in good faith and the choice of lending partners. It's clear from the Lendwithcare responses that they know and accept that whilst I lend my money with no strings, no interest requirements, it's somehow OK for someone else to charge interest on my money. It's not OK and that's definitely not what I signed up for so I think I'm going to make the decision to withdraw my funding and use those funds to support in other ways.

We understand your disappointment regarding the interest charged by some of Lendwithcare's local partners. Because Lendwithcare is operated by CARE International UK, we are fortunate to be funded by generous support from the UK public and many other sources. However, many of Lendwithcare's local partners aren't in the same position, and need to cover some significant operational costs associated with microfinance work. Interest is therefore charged to sustain their operations, which unfortunately wouldn't be possible otherwise.
We understand that this may not align with the expectations of every lender. However, business owners receiving loans are always aware of and accept these terms where they apply, as they value the opportunity to access loans to invest in their businesses and grow their income.
