Lamb in wolves clothing by Walter Mitty himself

Poor quality, poor customer service, and not remotely the premium product claimed — avoid

I bought a Stirling Timepieces watch expecting a high-quality, premium product. My experience has been deeply disappointing.

The lume performance is shockingly poor. I raised this with customer services and then deliberately tested it in conditions far beyond normal use. I left the watch repeatedly through the day in bright sunshine on a windowsill, giving it more than 12 hours of direct sunlight exposure.

Within around an hour in the dark, the lume was barely legible.

Customer services explicitly confirmed that this was normal operation. That is the key point. They did not say the watch was faulty. They did not say my test was inadequate. They confirmed that this level of performance was normal. In my view, that is an unacceptable admission for a watch being marketed and priced as a premium product.

The problems do not stop there. The screw-down crown feels poorly engineered and repeatedly tries to cross-thread unless handled with extreme care. The case has sharp edges which have cut me more than once. The bezel action is clunky and does not feel precise. Overall, the watch feels nothing like the quality, finishing, or engineering standard implied by the branding and price.

The customer service experience has been just as poor as the product. Their approach was adversarial from the outset, not constructive. They have had every opportunity to engage properly. They know full well which case this is from the description above. I have explained the issue clearly, including my position under the Consumer Rights Act, and I do not accept any suggestion that they have not been given the chance to resolve it.

So, before any public reply appears along the lines of “please contact us so we can look into this”, I want to be clear: they already know about this matter. Any such response, in my opinion, would be about managing public perception rather than genuinely resolving the issue.

The warranty also gives me no confidence in practice. The issue is not simply the wording on the page; it is what happens when you actually try to rely on it. Based on my experience, the warranty feels meaningless because the company appears determined to avoid treating obvious quality issues as warranty issues at all.

There is also, in my view, a wider problem with the brand image. The company leans heavily into a military-style persona and implied credibility, including an aura around special forces-type experience. As someone from a military background, I find that deeply unconvincing. It comes across to me as image-management and backstory rather than substance.

This is not, in my opinion, a high-end watch. It feels like clever marketing and military-themed storytelling wrapped around a product that simply does not match the claims made for it.

I am now preparing a formal complaint and considering issuing a letter before action.

Based on my experience, I would strongly advise people to avoid Stirling Timepieces.

Edits post reply- so they admit you can’tread it in the dark within an hour. Is that how they market their cheap tat?

    Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you have been disappointed with your experience.

We would like to clarify a few points for anyone reading this review. During our correspondence, we explained that the watch uses Swiss Super-LumiNova. The glow is brightest immediately after exposure to light and gradually fades over time, with most of the visible intensity diminishing within the first hour. Based on the description provided, this is generally consistent with the way Super-LumiNova performs across the watch industry and is not unique to Stirling Timepieces.

Importantly, we did not dismiss your concerns. We offered to inspect the watch under warranty at our expense, including associated shipping costs, to determine whether the lume was operating correctly. That offer remains open, and we continue to welcome the opportunity to assess the watch should you feel it is not performing as expected.

The additional concerns regarding the crown, case edges, and bezel action were not raised with us during our previous communications, so we have not yet had the opportunity to inspect or address those points. If the watch is returned for assessment, we will of course examine all aspects of its operation and finishing.

We take product quality and customer service seriously, and our goal is always to investigate reported issues thoroughly and resolve them fairly. While we appreciate that opinions on product characteristics can differ, we remain committed to working constructively with customers whenever concerns are brought to our attention.

    Thank you,
    The Stirling Timepieces Team

    Watch is awesome

Watch is awesome! Quality is surprising… I would put it up with a bunch of my other high end watches. They made a small mistake and set the wrong strap. I sent an email with a picture and the amount of times they apologized and the speed at which they fixed the issue shows me this is a company that cares not only about veterans but also customers. Durrant all blacked out if a daily wear for sure

    Hi Jack,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review.

We're sorry to hear you've experienced these issues with your watch.

With regard to the timekeeping, we'd first like the opportunity to troubleshoot the watch with you, as there are a number of factors that can affect the accuracy of a mechanical movement. If, after troubleshooting, the watch is found to have a fault, we'll of course arrange to have this rectified under the terms of your warranty.

We have replied to your email and look forward to working with you to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Regarding the NATO strap, this certainly isn't something we would expect during normal use. Please continue your correspondence with our customer service team, and we'll be happy to arrange a suitable resolution for the strap as well.

We pride ourselves on supporting our customers after their purchase and are committed to ensuring you're satisfied with your watch.

    Kind regards,
    The Stirling Timepieces Team

    I hate writing bad reviews

I hate writing bad reviews. I love this watch but it just doesn’t function. It’s losing its color- the bands are incredible difficult to change. Then it just doesn’t keep time. It loses the date and just isn’t functional able. Incredibly disappointed. Go to Luminox. 3 watches from them- no issues.

    Hi Sean,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. We're genuinely sorry to hear you're disappointed, especially as you mention that you love the design of the watch.

From your review, it doesn't appear that you've contacted our customer support team before posting. We would have welcomed the opportunity to troubleshoot the issues you've described, as several of them may have straightforward solutions.

With regard to changing the straps, could you confirm whether you're using a spring bar tool? The straps are designed to fit securely, and using the correct tool makes installation and removal much easier while preventing damage to the watch or strap.

Regarding the timekeeping and date issues, these are certainly not characteristics we would expect from a properly functioning watch. There are a number of factors that could be causing the behaviour you've described, and we'd be more than happy to help diagnose the problem. If there is a fault, we'll of course advise on the appropriate next steps under your warranty.

Please get in touch with our support team with your order number, and we'll work with you to resolve these concerns. We believe it's always best to give us the opportunity to help before concluding that the watch cannot be made right.

    Thank you,

    The Stirling Team

[Updated post reply] Precision tool for the military?" Misses the brief by miles

I spent £525 on a Stirling watch, including the additional steel strap and delivery, attracted by their branding as a rugged, precision tool watch built for reliability and aimed specifically at the military market. In reality, my watch loses 20 seconds every single day. This means the watch is nearly two and a half minutes slow every week. As anyone with military experience knows, the army does not do "wrong time", rather it thrives on strict punctuality. Marketing a watch this way when it cannot maintain basic accuracy is highly misleading.

When I contacted customer service, I was told that losing 20 seconds a day is "within tolerance" for their entry-level NH35 movement (-20 to +40 seconds). To fix it, they offered a regulation service for an extra £45 just to get it within 10 seconds. Paying £525 just to be told I need to spend more money to make the time readable is absurd. Furthermore, they refused a full refund simply because the watch has been worn. How else am I supposed to discover a timing defect without wearing it?

To make matters worse, when I commented on one of their social media advertisements pointing out the hypocrisy of their "precision" claims, they simply blocked me. This petty behaviour proves that they are far more worried about protecting their online image and internet clout than they are about providing actual customer service or a quality product.

I do not want a watch that is noticeably wrong every few days, and I certainly did not pay premium money for that privilege. If you expect actual precision and reliable build quality, look elsewhere. Stirling's product completely fails to live up to its own marketing.

    [Update post reply]

Thanks for the reply Stirling but you failed to address the fundamental issues and just stated your position.
Acknowledging that automatic movement is not as accurate as quartz doesn't address the fact you market the watch as a precision instrument aimed at the military market and probably shouldn't be marketing it as one because it isn't accurate or reliable. Perhaps if you added the regulation service as standard and add the cost to the base price of the watch it may set you apart from the competition and justify your claims.
You also failed to address my comment about blocking me on social media after publicly pointing out the hypocrisy of the advert and stating your published tolerances from your own emails and website on an advert.
You also failed to address the flaw in your returns policy that traps customers into either accepting a watch that isn't fit for purpose or losing money on a partial refund. Which is biassed in your favour and doesn't offer the consumer any reasonable means of protection.
No I won't be accepting the regulation service, you have enough of my money.

    Hi Andrew,

    Thank you for your review.

We're sorry to hear that you're disappointed with your purchase.

The watch you purchased uses a mechanical NH35 automatic movement, and the timekeeping performance you describe falls within the manufacturer's published tolerances. While we understand your preference for greater accuracy, it is important to distinguish between mechanical and quartz watches. Customers seeking near-perfect timekeeping accuracy would generally be better served by a quartz movement, whereas mechanical watches are typically chosen for their engineering, craftsmanship, and heritage rather than absolute precision.

Regarding your request for a refund, our position was not based on an unwillingness to help, but on the condition of the watch after it had been worn. Once a watch has been used, it can no longer be resold as new. Returned watches require inspection, cleaning, testing, and, where necessary, replacement of worn components, gaskets, or consumable parts before they can be considered for resale or refurbishment. This is why worn items are treated differently from unused products under our returns policy.

When you contacted us, we offered a regulation service to improve the watch's performance beyond the standard factory specification. This was intended as a practical solution to address your concerns, despite the watch operating within the expected range for its movement.

Please get in touch if you decide you would like to go ahead with a regulation.

    Kind regards,

    The Stirling Timepieces Team

    Amazing experience and quality product

Super fast delivery from UK to US. Very quality and durable pelican case that it was shipped in. The intentional inclusion of a metal warranty card with handwritten information on the back speaks volumes about the attention to detail in the company. I love that the Burton come with both a leather and Nylon band, allows me to tailor the presentation of the piece depending on where I'm going. The watchface is slick and professional, no extra frills and makes me feel comfortable wearing it in both white and blue collar settings. Would highly recommend this brand, and will likely buy from Stirling Timepieces again in the future.

This was an impulse purchase as I really liked the look of the watch. It’s become my every day watch. I wear it to work and hiking. Looks great on both the rubber and Zulu strap and feels good on the wrist.

    Avoid this brand updated

This is my second watch I've bought from sterling. One quartz and the second is a unit watch, both are poor quality from the workmanship to the bracelet. For the quartz the second hand does not line up at all with the markers. The Upham unit watch is entirely worse for $800 you get a standard seiko movement, a misaligned date wheel, flimsy bracelet, and a power reserve that lasts about 30 hours. If you’re going to get a watch spend the extra $200 and get something better. I have $300 seikos that are better quality with the same movement. Editing to respond, none of the emails i’ve sent to your “customer support” have ever been answered i sent an email upon receipt of my quartz Burton.

Thank you for your feedback and for choosing two of our watches. We're sorry to hear that your experience hasn't met your expectations.

Regarding the quartz watch, we received a single email from you and responded within 12 hours (1 Aug 2025, 15:04 BST), but did not hear back. Please check your spam or junk folder if you haven’t seen our reply. The alignment of the seconds hand is a characteristic of hand-assembled quartz watches across much of the industry. Even with careful assembly, achieving perfect alignment on all 60 markers is extremely difficult, as a deviation of only a few micrometres when fitting the hand can become more noticeable as it travels around the dial. While machine-assembled mass-produced watches can often achieve near-perfect alignment, slight variations are common even among many premium and luxury watch brands.

With respect to the Upham, we're disappointed to hear your concerns regarding the date wheel, bracelet, and power reserve. These issues have not previously been brought to our attention, so we haven't had the opportunity to inspect the watch or understand the cause. The movement used in the watch is rated to provide approximately 41 hours of power reserve when fully wound, so we'd be keen to assess whether there is an underlying issue affecting performance.

We would genuinely welcome the opportunity to investigate these concerns further. Please contact our customer service team so we can assess the watch and determine whether any adjustment or service is required.

We stand behind our products and are always happy to work with customers to resolve any genuine issues.

Great customer service and quality product.

I emailed ahead of time to ask a question about the watch roll I wanted to purchase. They answered right away and I bought it. Received it in the USA quickly. High quality roll and they also give to good causes. I’d do business with them again.
