We booked a car online at what seemed like a reasonable price. However, when we arrived to pick up the vehicle, the total cost had nearly doubled. The woman at the counter was very pushy about purchasing their additional insurance (around €180 for 9 days), making it clear that without it, any scratch would be charged and that the car would be inspected very thoroughly upon return.

When I started questioning the unexpected charges, her tone quickly became aggressive. She insisted it was "my choice," but the pressure and the threat of being charged for even the smallest damage made it feel anything but optional.

This company uses classic bait-and-switch tactics and relies on fear-based upselling. I strongly advise against renting from them. I will never use their services again and would not recommend them to anyone.

Reading these reviews I am not the first to be scammed at Thrifty Malaga and probably won't be the last. I told the guy on the desk that I did not want any extra insurance but he sneakily added it to the rental agreement. When he swiped my card for around 300 euros I queried it and he said its to cover the petrol and to sign here here and here. When around £200 was added after I returned the car I queried it with Thrifty and they agreed to refund within 7-10 days. They know full well that their staff are scamming customers in this way. That was 5 weeks ago. I have chased it up 3 times to no avail.

DO NOT USE THESE. They are nothing but rip-off merchants and theives. They will add insurance to your booking without asking, so if you REALLY need to use these then check everything you sign thoroughly. They will make it out like you're signing the refundable deposit, but you are also signing extra insurance and extras you didn't want or ask for. They also charged us over €70 for fuel even though we returned the car with a full tank. They take the money from your card a few days after you return the car to try and scam you so you don't challenge them. I'm trying to retrieve through booking.com as we speak but I'm not very hopeful I'll get anything.

Now, Be very careful at Malaga airport Thrifty! I rented a car for 11 days through Booking.com, picked it up and all seemed ok, returned it tank full etc. Now, next day my card was charged for extra 299 euros! Finally, after struggling to find contact for Thrifyy, managed to get an explanation: I was charged for "Supercover" insurance, which I did not purchase! Got by email a picture of the document showing my initials as acceptance but they were never made by me! So, somebody at Thrifty put my Initials there, not me, thus defrauding Thrifty for comission they get from extra sales, and defrauding me for an extra 299 euros, more than double I.paid already to Booking.com. So, be careful, keep your documents, take pictures, video the pick up process!

Bei Check24 wurde klar ausgewiesen, dass eine Kaution für den Tank vor Ort zu hinterlegen ist. (Mietdauer 14 Tag - 450 EUR inkl. Vollkaskoversicherung ohne Selbstbeteiligung.) Genau das wurde auch beim Check-in von einem Thrifty-Mitarbeiter kommuniziert. Die Höhe der Tankkaution betrug 680 €, die bei vollgetankter Rückgabe des Fahrzeugs vollständig erstattet werden sollte.
Obwohl ich das Fahrzeug wie vereinbart vollgetankt zurückgegeben habe, wurden mir 527,79 € einbehalten. Vor Ort wurde mir lediglich oberflächlich ein Vertrag vorgelegt, in dem offenbar ohne mein bewusstes Einverständnis eine zusätzliche Versicherung abgeschlossen wurde – obwohl ich nachweislich bereits einen vollen Versicherungsschutz über Check24 gebucht hatte. Eine solche Doppelversicherung ist weder sinnvoll noch zulässig und wurde mir auch nicht klar kommuniziert.
Online finden sich zahlreiche vergleichbare Erfahrungsberichte über genau diese Masche bei Thrifty am Flughafen Málaga – offenbar ein bekanntes und systematisches Problem. Es ist für mich vollkommen unverständlich, dass solche Anbieter weiterhin auf der Plattform Check24 gelistet werden, während gleichzeitig die berechtigten Beschwerden der Kunden mit pauschalen Ablehnungen beantwortet werden.
Ich habe mich leider auf die Bewertung von Check24 verlassen, sehr enttäuschend!!! Thrifty kann ich keinem empfehlen und werde ich auch nicht mehr buchen.

We chose Thrifty at Malaga Airport as it was was a well known company and had on airport pick up. I’ve met some scams with car hire before but nothing like this one which was a first for me.
Having prepaid and sorted excess insurance we arrived and we’re told that there would be a €55 refueling charge which was non refundable regardless of whether we returned the car full or empty (on top of any fuel) We objected and were told that we should have read the small print. Never in years of renting cars have I experienced such a scam. Total con, will never use Thrifty again

Sie bitten mich schamlos um einen Kommentar. Also fangen wir an. Wir haben 3-4 Wochen vor unserem Urlaub ein Auto von dieser Firma (Thrifty) für 140 € gemietet. Sie haben uns einen Tag vor unserem Flug einen Vertrag geschickt. Und als wir das Auto abholen wollten, haben sie 325 € extra verlangt, weil wir mit einer Visa-Karte bezahlt haben. Finger weg, das sind komplette Betrüger. Und wir waren nicht die einzigen Opfer dort. Bitte achten Sie auf die Kommentare und Bewertungen, bevor Sie ein Auto mieten.

They shamelessly ask me for a comment.. So let's start.. We rented a car from this company (thrifty) for 140€ 3-4 weeks before our vacation.. They sent us a contract a day before our flight.. and when we went to pick up the car, they asked for an extra 325€, the reason being that we paid with a visa card.. stay away, they are complete scammers.. and we were not the only victims there.. Please pay attention to the comments and evaluations before renting a car..

Assurance imposée et pratiques peu transparentes
J’ai loué une voiture chez Thrifty Séville via Booking.com. À la prise du véhicule, on m’a fait signer un document en espagnol (langue que je ne maîtrise pas), sans m’expliquer qu’il incluait une assurance Super Cover.

J’ai utilisé une carte Visa Classic à débit immédiat : cela rend l’assurance obligatoire selon leurs conditions, ce que je comprends après coup… mais aucune explication claire ne m’a été donnée au comptoir. J’ai cru signer une caution, pas acheter une couverture doublon inutile puisque je suis déjà assuré via ma carte bancaire.

Résultat : 125,60 € d’assurance imposée, + une caution carburant de 145,70 €, + le montant de la location prépayée. Près de 300 € pour 4 jours, c’est excessif et mal présenté.

Booking.com ne propose aucune médiation utile et se contente de me renvoyer vers Thrifty.

Clients non avertis, passez votre chemin. Ce genre de pratiques ternit totalement la confiance.

Avoid Thrifty Spain – scam alert at Alicante Airport!

I was charged for a missing antenna that was already gone when I picked up the rental car. I showed it before the rental to their staff member Victoria (initials: VCU), who noted it on the contract.

After returning the vehicle, I saw an unauthorized charge on my credit card. I called customer service immediately and emailed as instructed. They asked for photo evidence (which I sent — taken before rental), then they demanded more proof, as if I had stolen the antenna – even though most of their cars in the garage didn’t have antennas.

I booked through Holiday Autos, but they said they were only a booking platform and couldn’t help — I had to deal with Thrifty directly.

Two weeks later, I went to the Alicante for other business and stopped by their office wanting to speak with Victoria or the manager. Neither was available, and I was told to “just keep emailing or calling customer service.” I’ve done that and I am still waiting for a resolution.

The car also had no floor mats and a broken air vent. Frustrating, evasive, and dishonest from start to finish. Avoid Thrifty Spain at all costs.

Evita Thrifty España – ¡alerta de estafa en el aeropuerto de Alicante!

Me cobraron por una antena que ya faltaba cuando recogí el coche de alquiler. Se lo mostré antes del alquiler a su empleada Victoria (iniciales: VCU), quien lo anotó en el contrato.

Después de devolver el vehículo, vi un cargo no autorizado en mi tarjeta de crédito. Llamé inmediatamente al servicio de atención al cliente y envié un correo como me indicaron. Me pidieron pruebas fotográficas (que envié — tomadas antes del alquiler), y luego exigieron aún más pruebas, como si hubiera robado la antena, aunque la mayoría de sus coches en el garaje no tenían antenas.

Reservé a través de Holiday Autos, pero dijeron que solo eran una plataforma de reservas y que no podían ayudarme — que debía tratar directamente con Thrifty.

Dos semanas después, volví a Alicante por otros asuntos y pasé por su oficina para hablar con Victoria o el gerente. Ninguno estaba disponible, y me dijeron que “siguiera enviando correos o llamando al servicio de atención al cliente”. Lo he hecho, y **todavía estoy esperando una resolución**.

El coche tampoco tenía alfombrillas y tenía una rejilla del aire rota. Una experiencia frustrante, evasiva y deshonesta de principio a fin. Evita Thrifty España a toda costa.

Do not use what a big scamming company they are. The car itself was fine and I agreed to a £4 a day upgrade. Luckily I declined all their sales tactics of extra insurance for this that the other but where they get you is the vehicle has to come back full of fuel they know my hotel was in Benidorm. I filled right up to the brim just couldn’t get any more in when I left Benidorm to get to the airport the problem is you have to share a receipt within 10 km of the airport. The nearest petrol station to the airport is 16 km away. They managed to squeeze £7.72. I’m thinking euros into the tank but then charge me £41.32 for them to put it in then the VAT on top of that I ended up paying another £93.04 on top of my rental they must do this to every single customer as a petrol station is 16 km away not 10 so no one‘s gonna have a receipt will never use them again and we’ll leave them bad reviews everywhere.
I blame myself. I should’ve read their reviews 1.5 is absolutely terrible and I’ve read loads of reviews. They’re doing the same thing to people all the time.

Good customer service, excellent car with no issues, quick collection and drop off procedure and received my deposit back within 24 hours. Will definitely use Thrifty the next time I fly to Malaga.

Mann wir regelrecht betrogen, lieber 200 Euro mehr bezahlen und zu ehrlichen Anbieter Wechsel.
Vorort ist alles hektisch und obwohl man alles im voraus über Ryanair gebucht hat wird trotzdem von Thrifty über die Kreditkarte Geld im nachhinein abgebucht.
Ich habe dem Angestellten mehrfach erklärt und gezeigt mit meiner Buchung das alles bezahlt ist.
Finger weg.
Schade das ein Unternehmen wie Ryanair mit solchen zwielichtigen Firmen zusammenarbeitet.
Schade das man nicht null Sterne vergeben kann.

Let op bij het huren van een wagen bij deze maatschappij! Ze maken misbruik van de taalkennis om u een supplement aan te rekenen bij de verhuring. Als je geen upgrade voor een grotere wagen wil dan gaan ze over tot dagelijkse meerprijs voor een zogezegd nieuw wagen die niet gevraagd is geweest. Dit hebben ze nadien zomaar van onze borg afgetrokken.
Hier huren wij nooit meer!

Everything that could go wrong went wrong with this company We flew to Alicante at 0100 By entering the office there were already 2 customers arguing with staff. It turned out soon we were 3rd ones in that short period of time. We have paid for car in full (or at least online it said so) but the guy at Thrifty told us that we need to either pay extra €141.00 for fuel full to empty plus blocked €1000 as deposit (price of car rental without insurance was €68.00) or chose another option full to full and pay extra €76.00. I told him that our contract states full to full and we dont want any insurance He was very rude and basically said either you are now paying extra €76 or €141 It was getting late we had no other option than to chose cheaper option. We never seen car before receiving already filled I contract for us to sign. Once we got to the car the fuel lever was 3/4 We were also blocked on our account t €350 which we were told if we return car full to full we receive back. We got back to UK and got money back after a week to find out that a day later Hertz (on behalf of Thrifty) took €106.00 from our credit card without any explanation or email anything. Please beware this company. Very misleading and not trustworthy We will never use them again!!!

Wir hatten eine ähnliche Erfahrung am FH Malaga wie viele hier: Da wir eine Versicherung über C24 hatten, haben wir die vor Ort abgelehnt. Mussten an hundert Stellen unterschreiben, auf Nachfrage wurde nochmal uns nochmal erklärt, dass wir nichts zusätzlich abgeschlossen hätten, und schwupps, Versicherung für 350,00 untergejubelt. Weder direkt noch über C24 wurde Kulanz gezeigt.

Disgusting company that rip off their customers DO NOT rent a car from them they try and rip you off with a £300 euro insurance on what you have already paid which includes insurance? If you don’t pay it they won’t give you a car! So we paid for a car and ended up getting a taxi and then we have to try and get the original fee back from the broker. Never again with customer service like that they will go bust!

This company only exists with the target to scam/rip off customers!

I can only confirm what the others have written, they are not telling one single word about any additional insurance, even based on my question they told clearly No that the blocked amount is only for deposit and in case the tank will be left empty!
Then 1 week after the car has been Returned, they have booked 266,16€ from my Credit card, comm on it is even more than I have paid for 9 days rent at check24 with FULL INSURANCE ALREADY INCLUDED!.

Furthermore the invoice which is handed over is fully intransparent, it can be only a sign to scam the customers.

Please do not book any car at this company, or if so then do not trust what the people are telling you at the counter!

Auto gehuurd bij Thrifty Malaga de medewerker was zeer vriendelijk en gaf ons een upgrade omdat we vaker huren bij hun .Een nieuwe opel corsa.Ik ben zeer tevreden over thrifty ook bij het retourneren. Met vriendelijke groet Wendy van Osch

Bei der Anmietung wurde relativ intensiv versucht, mir Versicherungen und/oder "Road-Assist" zu verkaufen. Da ich aber über Check24 gebucht hatte, war dies nicht notwendig. Die Ablehnung meinerseits wurde dann auch akzeptiert und ich musste 4x unterschreiben, daß ich bis € 1500 hafte, da ich ja nicht versichert bin. Dies kann etwas verunsichern. Hier wäre mehr Transparenz wünschenswert. Aus Sicht von Thrifty ist das aber nachvollziehbar, da man bei denen ja tatsächlich nur rudimentär versichert ist. Die Anmietstation ist nicht im Car Rental Bereich des Flughafens, sondern im Parkhaus P1. Das ist der Schalter von Firefly, der aber irgendwie auch Thrifty ist. Ziemlich irritierend. Das Fahrzeug war dann aber sehr schön und fast neu. Die Rückgabe ging recht problemlos, das Fahrzeug wurde von einer Mitarbeiterin inspiziert und mit "OK" akzeptiert. Auf dem entsprechenden Beleg wurde keine Schäden vermerkt. Also alles in Allem: Wie üblich!

Nie wieder Thrifty über Hertz am Flughafen Malaga.Trotz bereits über den Vermittler Check 24 ohne Selbstbeteiligung abgeschlossene Vollkasko Versicherung wurde mir eine Supercover Versicherung in Höhe von 369 € untergeschoben. Bei der Nachfrage, warum was auf dem Papier steht, hat mir Thrifty nur versichert, dass das eine Caution ist und man das Geld nach 7 Tagen zurückbekommt. Der Betrag lag über dem tatsächlichen Mietpreis des Wagens . Über eine Betrugsanzeige wird nachgedacht. Check24 kann da natürlich nichts machen, man hätte die direkt anrufen sollen.
