I received unprofessional service and substandard workmanship from Balfes Bike Collection Service.

My bike was collected for a general service on Friday 27 March 2026. At the time of collection, I clearly highlighted that the rear mudguard was broken and required replacement. The collection engineer acknowledged this and assured me that the workshop would be informed.

However, on Wednesday 7 April—11 days (8 working days) later—I received a call from your workshop outlining the required work, and the replacement of the mudguards had not been included. I raised this omission immediately, and I was assured that a new set of mudguards would be added to the job for approximately £50.

On Friday 10 April—12 days (10 working days) after collection—I was notified that all work had been completed and was asked to pay £324.94, which I did promptly.

Delivery was initially scheduled for 16 April and, at my request, rearranged to 17 April. Upon delivery on 17 April (16 days / 14 working days after collection), I discovered that the pedals were missing. After contacting your service team, I was told they would be delivered and fitted the same day.

When the pedals were delivered, the engineer identified further serious issues: the bike rack had not been reattached, and the newly fitted mudguards had been installed incorrectly, causing them to rub against the tyres.

As a result, my bike was returned to the workshop for corrective work. This sequence of events demonstrates a clear lack of care, attention, and quality control. What should have been a routine service has instead been prolonged, inconvenient, and unacceptable.

I was without my bike for four weeks, with no clear indication of when it will be returned in a satisfactory condition. This level of service falls far below reasonable expectations.

Given the extent of the issues and the inconvenience caused, I requested a full refund for the service or compensation.

What I received was an apology from Balfes and a commitment to reviewing internal processes around job logging, parts identification, quality control checks, and communication between collection, workshop, and customer updates.

I will not be using or recommending Balfes in the future and would urge anyone thinking of using the service to think long and hard.

Good bike and price , although long wait for initial setup and rear brake failed on first ride this was compensated but still waiting for replacement brake , luckily I had a spare

Staff always helpful and knowledgeable. Great range of bikes, kit, components and spares. The Gatwick store can get busy but there is a waiting area. Needs a coffee machine 😉

I had a snapped valve in my rear brake lever on a Specialized Turbo Levo Comp the workshop guys told me the problem straight away but said the part was on back order so found one in stock elsewhere which I ordered whilst leaving the bike at Balfes, when the part arrived I dropped but off and within 2 hours the new lever was fitted, brakes bled and all good to go 👍🏻

Took three weeks to carry out a break service i feel this is to long was never updated until the service was completed when I picked the bike up i never received an apology or explanation

Great attention from the friendly and professional staff. Really knowledgable and helped our 5 year old to choose the right 20 inch bike for his upcoming birthday. Very happy all round.

Keith offered me a bike fit on my new road bike I bought from Balfe’s in Gatwick and Keith was very good he exactly knew what he was doing didn’t rush me took his time and so pleased with the service they are brilliant 👍👏

Always great service

Purchased a bike from these jokers, was advertised as the 2025 Model - when I registered it on the the Manufacturers website it informed me it was a 2023 model. Most other retailers have the model I purchased as a 2023 model and not a 2025. Their customer service disagree with my claim this is a 2023 model, cant be bothered to send them any more evidence to the contrary it is like banging your head against a brick wall.

Only knocked down a star as slight delay picking up bike on arrival even with order number. Thanks Balfes no doubt I’ll be back soon for another bike!

Helpful knowledgeable staff who are always willing to help, if I can get it at Balfe’s then that’s where I’m heading.

Steve was very kind and gave excellent service for my first road bike - he advised trying a bigger frame and got on built and ordered for me, which turned out to be correct - for a female walking into a bike store I was nervous but I was made to feel comfortable - they were kind and efficient even though extremely busy - I live my bike!

Super helpful staff - helped me to set up my new di2 bike with the e-tube app

Went with a mate to pick his bike up and came away with one of my own. Brilliant friendly staff with great knowledge, from Dan who persuaded me I needed the bike, Steve who took my cash and Nick & Ash in the workshop who sorted it for me. Top crew.

Once I'd seen a bike I was interested in, I was given helpful advice in the correct size, and given an opportunity to try the bike.
The member of staff who served me was helpful and informative.
I was impressed with their customer service in their manner, the amount of communication as I purchased and collect a bike.

This is a somewhat belated review in that I purchased the bike in March. The Company were really responsive over email and accommodated a change of collection location and a day earlier at pretty short notice. In a world where as consumers we can feel like a number, the personal service I received stood out. My son loves hitting the trails on his new mountain bike!
