Monthly direct debits

Why have you suggested (on my current bill which I have just paid) a recommended monthly payment to be set up as a direct debit of £42.00 when my average monthly water usage is £22.70 ? That would mean that every month I would be paying to you an extra£20.00 .so in 6 months I would be in credit to the tune of £120.00. A totally ridiculous amount .
Not going to happen !!

South East Water's customer service is appalling

I reported a water leak on Sunday 7th July. We heard a noise similar to drawing water filling a cistern but couldn't make out where it was coming from as we can hear it all over the house. Having called a plumber (it was a Sunday), who confirmed that the leak is from the water meter itself - the fitting where the water meter is connected was only replaced in November 2023 by South East Water. The water meter is whizzing around, losing tens of litres of drinking water every minute, which is going on our bill. After a lot of chasing, I was told that an engineer had been assigned and they would keep me updated. On Friday 12th July, having heard nothing I wrote and requested an update. I was told that a contractor had been appointed to do the repair on the 7TH OF AUGUST! The noise all over the house is getting louder but I'm still receiving emails from SE Water telling me to save water, which is an absolute joke when they're happy to literally waste litres every day. I understand they have to prioritise leaks, but if they can't repair a leak within ONE MONTH, you really need to employ more staff and/or contractors. I do hope that the leak, which I've been told "will just disburse underground" doesn’t do any damage to our front gardens and driveways.
SE Water could improve by getting the customer service right and by repairing the leak.

There has been a water leak past my house for five weeks .. South East water told me it had not been reported. went on social media to find they misinformed me … many people had already notified them (i hate being lied to!).
Telephoned south east water again .. was informed work was held up as they had been trying to contact a neighbour. So I went to that neighbour who informed me they had NO CONTACT attempts from South East water.. and that they had been complaining too! Back to South East water to vociferously complain.
IN THE MEANTIME FOR OVER FIVE WEEKS THOUSANDS OF LITRES OF MAINS WATER HAS BEEN LITERALLY GOING DOWN THE DRAIN.
THIS DISGUSTING COMPANY WANTS TO INCREASE OUR CHARGES WHILE THROWING OUR WATER AWAY

Hi Isobel, thanks for taking the time to report a leak you have seen on our network. We have over 6 million joins in our network of 9,000 miles of pipes, so leaks are a regular, inevitable occurrence, that we have 52 teams working 24/7 to find and fix.

We understand it's frustrating to see leaks, and in this case not seeing a reported leak fixed immediately, but there is a rigorous process we have to follow to ensure the best and safest repair is carried out.

Once a leak is reported to us, a work order is raised for a technician to attend and assess the leak. The technician will check the area around the leak to see if:

- traffic lights or other forms of traffic management are required
road closures are needed

- there are any access issues, for example, blocking a driveway
the cause of the leak

- If the leak is an easy fix, such as a loose bolt, the attending technician will fix it at this point.

If the repair is more complex, our contract planners will liaise with the Highways Authority in the area to gain a permit to complete the repair.

Sometimes water leaking may not actually be clean, drinking-quality water from our mains. For instance, it could be excess rainwater overflowing from a drain, so in these instances, we would contact the appropriate company for what we find.

In lots of cases, a permit is required for us to actually carry out any works to repair a leak.

A permit is permission to dig up a road or install traffic management. The purpose is to coordinate all utilities’ work in a particular area.

We would apply for a permit for the following:

- any work carried out on all streets publicly maintained by or on behalf of the Highways Authority

- work that requires excavation of the Highway Authority's assets
any work that requires traffic management that will cause disruption to pedestrians or road traffic

- The permit will authorise work to be carried out within a specific time frame. The type of work required, and the length of time needed for the repair will determine how long the permit will take to obtain.

If other utilities are working in or near the road where the leak is reported, the authority will encourage collaborative working, where they will propose one job to be finished and the next repair to be completed while the hole is still open.

In the event of an emergency, i.e., burst main, customers without water or health and safety risk, we can start work immediately and apply retrospectively for a permit, but we must apply within a set timeframe of the works beginning.

Once the repair is complete, we will reinstate the area. The area may remain closed to allow the road surfacing to harden, and we will return to reopen the area when it is safe.

Unfortunately, in most cases fixing a leak isn't a quick or easy process - Lucy

South East Water contractors Clancy…

South East Water contractors Clancy Group leaving the site dirty again. SEW simply dont care and Clancy have no pride in their work whatsoever. As a monopoly with no effective oversight from CCW or OFWAT there is no incentive to improve.

Lucy from SEW wants more data. Your CEO David Hinton tells me the clean was "overlooked". Odd because Clancy keep "overlooking" the clean up. There is another case this week, exactly the same. No gaslighting reply from SEW or Clancy yet.

(REVIEW LEFT BY WRAS APPROVED PLUMBER)

(REVIEW LEFT BY WRAS APPROVED PLUMBER)

What an absolutely terrible company, elderly vulnerable customer with no water reported Friday morning to south east water.

4 days later and over 6 phone calls and around 4 hours worth of time on the phone and we are still no further

Customer had a burst water mains on friday and has been left with no water in the house, we have proved that the pipework is old still going off of the boundary so we are unable to carry out a repair or replacement of there mains until the section of pipe from outside the boundary to within the boundary is changed to plastic

keep getting told we will get a callback with an update on when the dig team will attend as we are legally not able to do anymore as pipework requires replacing under the pavement

So fed up and disappointed this company can treat elderly vulnerable people in such a terrible manner leaving them without water for so long

Water Pressure Back to Normal!

Myself and a few neighbours have been suffering from low water pressure for about 18 months. Sometimes the water just dribbles out of the mains tap. At best the flow gets to 6 litres a minute which is considerably less than the 11 litres a minute requirement. This is insufficient for a combi-boiler and dangerous if you are having a shower.

We have all had multiple conversations with SEW Customer Care, who are polite but promise to call back, (which they rarely do) or promise that the issue will be looked into. Until recently progress towards resolving the issue has been negligible. Much to the amazement of all of us and after 21 months their contractor seemed set to install a new connection to the mains to remove the problem of low pressure. They were due to start on the 22nd April. Previous to this date there was no pre-project communication to anybody affected by the works. Of course nothing happened! Apparently their contractor Docra, do not have a new start date and as usual there was no communication!

Please talk to your customers!! This is an appalling company!

Thursday 6 June 2024

I am pleased to say that SEW,s contractor has replace the 20mm diameter feed pipe off the adjacent main, with pipes with sufficient capacity to supply mains water to 4 cottages south of Hurstpierpoint an acceptable water pressure. We are obviously pleased with this end result.

However the lessons for SEW to be learnt from this repair are as follows;

1) Why has it taken in excess of 2 Years?
2) Why do the staff in Customer Care
rarely communicate with their customers about maintenance projects?
3) There have been various trips to look at this issue, which quite frankly could have been organised in a much more efficient manner.

Please just communicate more!

Nationalise south east Water

Lucy can you explain why I was asked to use less water? It would appear that the reservoir in Canterbury is due now and perhaps another one or two need to be built to ensure we have drinking water into the future. As regards executive pay happy to look at this again but how has CEO pay increased in comparison with other employees? has reductions in work force or productivity resulted in increase in profits and CeO pay? How much water is lost to leaks each year. I appreciate you don’t deal with sewage and apologise for that comment but if you are going to send something to me send the full facts and be honest about good and areas for improvement or don’t waste postage etc. I want to see leadership with vision, values and integrity and perhaps you can point me in the right direction to find these in your response and I’ll happily delete the first message ?

I tried to give a zero score. How dare this company send me an email about how I can save water over the summer. I’ll do this if share holders stop taking dividends until they have fixed the problems their greed has caused by putting profit above the rights of the consumer to have clean rivers and sea.

Hi Phil, thank you for your feedback on the recent newsletter email we have sent.

We understand it is easy to get confused between water companies, however, we are a drinking water-only company and do not deal with sewage, and are therefore not responsible for pollution to our rivers and seas. As our customer, your sewerage provider will be Thames Water or Southern Water.

We are committed to protecting and enhancing our natural environment, and work hard, alongside partners, to protect rivers and underground water sources. You can find more information on what we do here: southeastwater.co.uk/environment

Like all water companies, our plans and investments run in 5-year cycles, and we have submitted our most ambitious plan for 2025 to 2030, with an investment into the infrastructure of £1.9 billion.

We also have plans to build a new reservoir near Canterbury, which will be required from 2035 to reduce the amount of water we take from groundwater and rare chalk stream habitats. The reservoir will supply an extra 22 million litres to the area daily, equivalent to 275,000 full baths.

No external dividend has been paid to shareholders since 2019, and those shareholders do not expect to receive a dividend until 2025 at the earliest.

Our CEO received a bonus in 2023, which was awarded by the remuneration committee. This bonus is made up of multiple elements, including health and safety factors and an environment programme, and we can confirm that the CEO did not receive any bonus payments for operational performance.

I hope this helps with your queries, please reach out to us again if there's anything else we can answer or help with.

Thank you - Lucy

Very Friendly Customer Service and Engineer

My water supplier is South East Water. Thames Water mixed up my address with a very similar address and fitted one of their smart water meters in error. When I realised what had happened I contact South East. All the people I spoke to were really friendly and helpful and so was their engineer who came and removed the Thames meter and installed a new South Easter Water Meter. Customer service at South East Water couldn’t have been better. I tried to report the error to Thames whose response was awful and they didn’t want to know about their error.

Terrible organisation

Terrible organisation. Polluting, supply failures, huge price increases - what's to praise??

In the 2 years to 2022 they spent £228.8m on dividends and debt interest but only £179.8m on investment in infrastructure. This is no way to run a public utility company. Foreign owners get their payoffs but the company is in huge, costly debt.

Despite their very poor performance, CEO David Hinton was awarded just over £100k bonus on top of his £280k base salary in 2023. I thought bonuses were for exceptional performance - at SE Water they seem to be for exceptionally POOR performance.

Meanwhile our bills go up and up. I thought our water bill would come down this year as 2 of the kids left home in the summer. Half the amount of occupants yet our bill has increased.

We recognise that our ability to supply customers during extreme weather events has been challenged, and we have not provided the service we should have, and this plan addresses those issues head-on.

You can read more about our plan here: southeastwater.co.uk/businessplan

Regarding your bill increase, the proposal to gradually increase bills over a five-year period is contained in South East Water’s largest ever business plan which was submitted to regulator Ofwat last October. This is proposing a £1.9 billion investment in the water network from 2025 to 2030.

It is expected that Ofwat’s draft determination will be published in the next couple of months, which will indicate Ofwat’s view of the level of price increases and investment between 2025 and 2030. South East Water will respond to the draft determination and Ofwat will publish their final determination in December 2024.

The proposed average bill rises taken from business plans and that have been quoted in the press recently have been increased by the Consumer Council for Water (CCW) to take into account estimated inflation levels over the next six years.

Our proposed average bill being considered by Ofwat is for a rise starting next April (2025) and before inflation would increase bills by 20 per cent by April 2029 or £3.80 a month or 12 pence a day.

If your bill is significantly higher than the proposed average of a rise of £3.80 a month, please reach out to us so we can take a look at your change in usage, as this may indicate a leak, burst, or issue with your supply.

I hope this helps with your queries, please reach out to us again if there's anything else we can answer or help with - Lucy

No stars. Dreadful experience

No stars. Came to my place without prior notice. Didn't explain job properly.Blocked access to two schools, one special needs, at school closing time, with their four vehicles. Blocked 24hour ambulance access required by my next door neighbour even after she and I both mentioned it. Took a huge pneumatic drill to a shallow brick and concrete rubble layer hit the sand underneath and fractured my gas supply pipe. Swore constantly and mainly ignored my requests for information. Left leaving a gas leak. Told me this happens frequently! Caused me to lose my appetite and sleep and actually throw up with the stress, I'm 72 and alone in the house.Told me that Southern Gas would simply "fusion joint the pipe'. I had no gas for two days as I have a long and hilly front garden and old piping.. I will have to have an ugly meter box on the front of my lovely old cottage. I have a huge trench now open for twenty five feet up my garden. They are AWFUL. I am seeking compensation

Hi Michael, i'm sorry to hear you were having difficulties accessing our website to check your online account. If you are unable to call us, please ensure you have registered for our online portal, My Account, here: https://myaccount.southeastwater.co.uk/auth/register

We have reached out to you to inform you of a high meter reading as sometimes this can indicate an issue on your property, such as a leak or burst, particularly if your circumstances at home haven't changed and you're not using more water than usual in your day-to-day life.

I understand this can be concerning, but being aware of and resolving a potential issue such as a leak quickly can minimise significant damage to your home and property if a leak is left undetected.

I understand this was a while ago now, but if you're still having difficulties accessing your online account or getting in touch with us to chat about a potential issue with your water supply and usage, please respond to this comment, or you can contact us via this page: https://www.southeastwater.co.uk/help/contact/
