What a fantastic experience
What a fantastic experience. The setting, the old trains, the amazing volunteers who were so friendly and knowledgeable. We had a great time. The reason I’ve given it 4* rather than 5 is that the food and tea could have been a bit hotter and my poached eggs were hard-boiled. The food was still incredibly tasty though and I would book again but just wanting to be honest. I completely appreciate that cooking for 200 on a moving train can’t be easy !!
Thank you to all the volunteers though for a very memorable morning.

Nice experience but could be improved
The train trip was lovely, steam pulled at the front with a diesel engine at the back, through nice countryside. The lunch was very good in parts (nice pate and good, though very sweet, soup and excellent desserts of bread and butter pudding and apple crumble.) However, the main courses were a bit chaotic, with a huge amount of food mixed together in a large bowl. The chicken was very nice but the beef was so tough and chewy as to be inedible. The promised roast potatoes were boiled potatoes and the vegetables all just thrown together. We had paid for a cheese course for one person and at £6.50 this was absolutely excellent - amazing value for money with 4 very good cheeses, chutney, biscuits, butter, grapes and a stick of celery.
All in all it was a very pleasant experience let down by the really awful beef and the fact that there was so much food it was overfacing. If the beef was better and the vegetables were served seperately it would be a really great day out.

Borders Explorer Experience
My dad had the pleasure of doing the Borders Explorer experience on Saturday, what an absolutely brilliant day out, mainly hosted by the GM himself who provided a wealth of information and anecdotes. Totally looked after by wonderful staff & volunteers from start to finish, with a really lovely breakfast thrown in too.
An unexpected bonus was running about 3/4 mile down the Stoke branch, along with 2 dramatic run pasts at Leekbrook jnc with WD701 (which I last saw at the Mid Hants nearly 35 years ago!).
The tour behind the scenes at the loco works and carriage works was very interesting, nice to see progress on 48173 and view a very recent GWR pannier arrival, joining a saddle tank purchase!
Can not recommend this more highly, well done CVR for putting on something completely innovative and unusual - both me and my dad thoroughly enjoyed it.

We had a party of 15 for lunch food was delivered hot and delicious staff went out of their way to be helpful and guide/waiter giving train info was great

A " Must do"
The area - we are on holiday for a week - benefits enotmously from this excellent "attraction". We were helped to book by a very friendly volunteer....and everything else was enhanced by the helpful approach of all the others - from the car park person to the Stationmaster!
The duration of the "ride" - a round trip of just over two hours, through typical English countryside - is ideal: fun but not spectacular.
Very reasonably priced for what is provided.Not cheap - the ride and food/drink - but good value.
Very minor criticisms:The running or not of trains on our chosen date was unclear from online booking so we had to phone( see above) for help....and the Railway Timetable available requires review, to make trip-planning easier and a little more info. re. what to expect if you break the journey would be useful....as the internet isn't very helpful. Again, however, a volunteer provided background info. readily, when approached.
In short: Highly recommended.
