Murder mystery
Myself, my husband and daughter and partner felt very disappointed with the service we received, the breads were dry, the beef was so chewy and inedible, the mushroom orzo was bland and the rhubarb crumble was so hard we couldn't get our spoons through it!! I ordered a drink but the waiter didn't bring it but he served everyone around us!! The murder mystery was boring so we lost interest especially with no clear instructions on how it was going to work!! All in all considering it was my husband's birthday and how much it cost it was certainly wasn't an enjoyable experience!!!

We are disappointed to hear your comments regarding the food. We have checked the dining report from the evening, and there is no record of any of these issues being raised with our team at the time. Had we been made aware that the bread was dry, the beef was not to your liking, or that you were unhappy with any of the other dishes, we would have been very happy to replace or swap the item for you. We always encourage guests to speak to a member of the team during the meal so that we have the opportunity to resolve any concerns at the time.
We are also sorry to hear that your drink was missed. This should not have happened, and we will pass your comments regarding the service on to the team.
We would just like to clarify that the dessert served was an apple crumble, rather than rhubarb crumble.
With regard to the Murder Mystery itself, we are sorry that you did not find the experience enjoyable. The evening does include information and instructions explaining how the mystery works, although we appreciate that the format may not suit everyone.
We are sorry that the evening did not meet your expectations, especially for a birthday celebration. Had we been made aware of the concerns during the evening, we would certainly have done our best to address them at the time.

A relaxing trip down memory lane
I enjoyed it because I am a self-confessed heritage railway addict. The chance to see the American built locomotives was a plus as was the experience of climbing a 1 in 45 gradient.
The staff were friendly and welcoming and the cost offered good value for money.
There are a couple of things which could be improved - the website isn’t particularly useful- I had to search for timings of intermediate stations and it appears to be focussed on selling experiences rather than giving information about the railway and its future plans.
There could have been more information given on the p.a. on the train, eg it was announced that the train would make an unscheduled stop at Leek Junction but no reason was given. It would also have been good to hear about what the operating arrangements will be when the track reaches Leek town.
Finally it would enhance the experience if you could alight at Ipstones to watch the reversing process.
Overall, however, we really enjoyed our visit and thoroughly recommend the experience

Exploring Borders for breakfast
A lovely day on the railway, with exceptional food. For me the best part was visiting the tracks, as far as possible, to Leek and Stoke; and trackside for 2 run pasts at Leek Brook.
Note this is not a photo charter event. Indeed for the run pasts you start looking south towards the sun.
Note for the event staff not to put out milk jugs until guests are seated. The table cloths slide a lot as guests get seated and 2 jugs went over in our carriage.

Borders Explorer, A great informative day out
The borders explorer was very informative day out, lasting about 5 hours around parts of the track you dont normally go to with other trips.visiting the workshops and having questions answered was a nice bonus. there was even a free onboard raffle to have a trip on the footplate of the engine. However the only negative of the trip was the breakfast food was a bit on the cold side due to some delays on the train leaving

I bought this experience as a treat for…
I bought this experience as a treat for my Dad's 84th Birthday. The station and train were lovely and old fashioned and made us feel like we had travelled back in time. The staff were also lovely and helpful. We started our journey at 6.30pm promptly. We took our own food and drinks onboard although you could buy drinks etc at the cafe in the station and there was also a drinks trolley that came round. Unfortunately 40 minutes into our journey we came to a stop because the steam engine wasn't working 😕 We had to sit and wait for an hour for a diesel train to come and take us back to Froghall station. We had an apology from the Driver but felt this was not sufficient. I thought we might have got a complimentary hot drink while we sat waiting to be rescued but sadly No.
Very disappointed with the lack of Customer Service 😞

Excellent day on the CVR
Overall, an entertaining and informative day out. All the staff were helpful, efficient and friendly. The small waiting staff managed to distribute a great many very tasty breakfasts surprisingly quickly, and hot and cold drinks orders were rapidly filled. As expected, the journey over the usual running line and the excursions to Leek Station and the start of the Stoke branch were very instructive. An artists impression of the proposed Leek Station would make an attractive addition. Something that could be attached to the fencing for the day would suffice. Jack was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic during the shed tour etc. The only downside to the day was the poor performance of the sound system, which made it difficult the follow the boss's instructive commentary at times.

A great day out
Staff were extremely helpful, polite and knowledgeable.
Station and carriages were clean, very comfortable and well presented.
Rail journey was lovely with some excellent scenery views and great photo opportuinities.

Unfortunately the steam train broke down.
Unfortunately the steam train broke down on us during the first part of the journey. Only had less than half an hour of the steam train journey when it failed. Was left for a period without being informed of what was happening, then the very apologetic train driver came on over the tannoy to inform us we would be pulled back to our destination by diesel in the darkness. Such a shame.
