Good First Time Buyer Experience

I had a good overall experience with Connect2Law.

Initially I spoke to Ed Cooper who explained everything to us clearly, sent us a detailed quote and got us set up with our account.

Then we were referred to the Legal support team who carried out all the property searches and initial legal work. This can (and did) take a long time but we were able to get updates using the online portal and in more detail by phoning up. Particularly as first time buyers you can be left feeling a bit in the dark, so I thought there could have been more of a proactive approach to communication from C2L during this stage. I am confident though that everything was done correctly and as quick as it could have been and in the end we received an enormous amount of high quality and very detailed info on the property.

Once searches had come back we were then assigned to Laura Unite who was excellent in getting things moving quickly and kept us fully informed at all the important points in the transaction. Our case took longer than usual due to our seller's preference that tenants remain in situ between exchange and completion, but that aside everything was negotiated properly and quickly, and we were kept in the loop throughout - all you can ask for, really. All for a very competitive price. I would highly recommend.

Awful in every way

Awful in every way. We had a very similar experience to others described below.

In a nutshell, we were also lured in by their promise of 8 weeks to completion. Our original conveyancer left the firm with no notice after 8 weeks and, after 3 weeks of no contact from anyone, we were handed over to another solicitor who clearly had far too much on her plate and had no time for our case. I was calling the company at least three times per week to try and get any movement on our case and was often greeted by rude admin staff. They would promise to pass on my message but then I would hear nothing for weeks at a time. Over the next 8 weeks we escalated to the operations manager and then finally the CEO, who assured that they would help us and then seemed to do nothing. After 22 weeks of this poor treatment we had had enough and pulled out of the purchase.

The email we sent to terminate was not responded to for 2 weeks until we followed it up. It took them 3 weeks to return our full deposit.

Avoid this firm at all costs if you want to keep your mental health in tact. I hope I never have to deal with them again.

22 weeks in, no move, about to fall through: redefining incompetence

Please avoid this firm - don't be lured in by their efficient sales process. They state that your conveyance will be complete in 8 weeks: I instructed them 22 weeks ago, and as yet, have no idea when my move will go through, and no point of contact who can provide this information. I wouldn't be surprised if there's another 22 week's waiting to be done, all on a fairly simple conveyance. To be honest, I think it's more likely that my purchase will fall through.

As an example of their incompetence: They request a deposit to start the searches - I believe this is fairly standard. What isn't standard is that, despite my emails, it took them 5 weeks to realise that I had paid the deposit and begin the searches - 5 weeks where no work was being done.

I will not detail all the times they have fallen short here, but instead provide a few things to expect if you are brave enough to take them on:
- they will not do any work unless you ring them more or less daily
- when they do decide to do some work, they will sit on it until you chase them.
- even if you do ring daily, you will not reach anyone knowledgeable about your case. It will be a member of customer services who will repeat the same lines over and over, make a reasonable sounding promise, and forget about it the moment they put the phone down. When you ring them the following day, they will have forgotten about yesterday's conversation, so you're back at square one.
- there are some reviews singing praises of conveyancers. While I do not doubt these reviews' truthfulness, our conveyancer has so far been awful. I have heard from him once, promising to provide some reports by a certain date. Needless to say, he did not keep to his word. What is worse, he has been dodging our emails, our calls, and he went on a two week holiday without any notice or planning for his absence, while the chain was in a precarious position. I imagine he did just as much work on our case from the beach as he has done from the office.
- Right at the start, you will be assigned a 'case manager'. I'm not sure what this person does - they certainly don't reply to any emails or calls. I have not heard from mine at all in the 22 weeks.
- If you ever do get through to them they are rude on the phone - one of their conveyancers even went so far as to hang up on me. Instead of working with the estate agents they will do their best to alienate them, meaning that you'll be the one fielding their difficult questions.
- After complaining, I was assured by a head of department that he would monitor my case closely, and be on hand to help where he could. He started well by deploying an additional lawyer to my case temporarily, but now gone AWOL for a couple of weeks - I've sent him a number of emails, all of which have been met with no reply.

In summary then; the people you will be able to get in contact with don't know anything useful, and the people who do know anything useful are entirely uncontactable. I believe this is by design, since it does an effective job of protecting the company from being pestered into doing work.

Needless to say, as a first time buyer, this conveyancer was not at all what I needed in an already stressful process. I regret not spotting the signs sooner and switching to a different conveyancer - the reality is that there's not much I can now do except chase and hope for the best. Again, I urge you to stay away.

ZERO STARS

For this law firm the zero stars option should be created, this company is beyond awful. Under no circumstances get involved. They do not answer emails, they'll tell you the person in charge is in a meeting and will call you back within an hour, it never happens.
I have been waiting 11 weeks for them to act. Finally, when both seller's and buyer's solicitors let us know that their emails and phone calls were not answered I decided leave them and get my documents back. In 11 weeks I managed to speak to conveyancer (Magdalena)once. She told me she had just received the paperwork from her colleagues. I know she telling a lie since one of the very few emails I got from her colleagues weeks earlier was to alert me that the paperwork was set and handed to the conveyancer. If like me you got caught, the best piece of advice I can give you: as soon as you feel things are wrong (with this company they definitely will) you need to act, do not wait 11 weeks.

Resposta da Connect2Law

Dear Frankie,

We're sorry to hear that you were disappointed by our service. There are two sides to the story of course, and there was a month delay at the start of the case while we chased some of the welcome pack documents and draft contract papers from the other side's lawyer.

Thereafter we did progress the case at good speed until the start of October when we accept that your lawyer did become very busy and there was a couple of weeks' delay on completing the reports and enquiries. That said, we were close to exchange and we believe we would have exchanged inside 3 months from receipt of the initial documents if we had been given the chance.

We have made some changes to our internal procedures so that going forward even a two week delay wouldn't happen again. We hoped you were successful in completing your transaction and that we have the chance to work with you again in the future, to show you an improved service level which we are now achieving.

Rgds,

As you know, we listened to your concerns and we allocated your file to a new conveyancer, reflecting the fact that the previous one had become very busy at the time you wrote.

We understand that the transaction is now going very smoothly, it exchanged today and your daughter (our primary contact point) is very happy with our conveyancing service. We hope you will revisit our service rating in light of this :)

We hope you enjoy your new home and will be happy to help you again in the future.

Seriously worrying

Absolutely terrible. Our one-star review comes from the fact that after travelling from abroad, they forced my father-in-law to sit in a reception area whist they went through his finances with absolutely no confidentiality. We have now found a new property and as such have asked for a full break down of what they intend to deduct from our initial payment and (at the request of our father in law), return of our original documents and a full understanding of their data handing procedures, however, we have had no response via email in a day and we were on hold for over 30 minutes trying to speak to someone.

We were stupid and didn’t read the reviews

We were stupid and didn’t read the reviews before we chose this company
We were taken in by their marketing blurb and for example the fact that they say that once the process starts you can track progress on line- don’t believe it. It is never updated! Information that we sent to them two months ago we are now being asked about by our now nominated solicitor. The other solicitors in our ( short - only three properties ) chain have found that they can’t get through on the phone to Connect2law
We are worried that everything will collapse and it will all he due to the slow progress made by them. There is nothing personal about the service. We are promised that we will he called back by the end of the day and it never happens. DON’T choose this firm. I wonder if they ever really take notice of the bad reviews? They seem to respond, but will anything change? Not in time for us I fear.

Resposta da Connect2Law

Dear Emer,

Thank you for your feedback, which we take on board and as you know we have already contacted you to ensure your transaction reaches a successful conclusion.

We read every review and following an investigation, where we find a complaint is fair, we do act on the findings, so that we can improve our service for future clients. By way of an example, we recently discovered a fault with our phone system which had been diverting incoming phone calls such that they were not answered, but that has now been corrected.

Just to confirm, our portal is updated automatically within a few hours of our lawyers completing a milestone piece of work on your case. There are 20-30 milestones for each case (depending on the type of transaction) and we feel this is granular enough for most clients, but you can always call your Account Manager if you want an even more detailed update.

We are looking forward to a successful conclusion to your purchase.

Regards,

First time buy with positive experience

We bought our first house through Connect2Law and though there were periods when nothing seemed moving (mostly due to circumstances beyond Connect2Law's purview; details below), overall I much satisfied with how the conveyancing was conducted and the updates I received during the whole process.

The Legal assistance team which dealt with the initial part of the purchase were a bit slow in getting back with replies.
But as soon as I was assigned my solicitor (Adam Shire), things picked up pace. Adam has been all through very meticulous in his dealings and always quickly replied back with any queries that I had (even late on Friday evenings..)

I would especially thank Adam for spotting an issue with the freehold contract, which he quickly flagged up with the seller's solicitors. From here on there was a hold-up because we waited for the Seller's solicitor to sort the issue out.
The other delay that happened in the process early on was during the local searches. Here again, once Connect2Law had submitted the searches request the only thing that could be done was to wait for the city council to back with the results.

I had a Help to Buy ISA which I closed with directions provided and Adam was successfully able to get the 25% (of the ISA amount) from the gov.

Overall, a positive experience with Connect2Law and appreciated the meticulous work of our solicitor Adam.

At last complete

Unfortunate that the person who was dealing with the sale of my Aunts flat left the company. As Power of Attorney I was the one left to deal with things. It took approximately 4 weeks of not being able to speak with anyone, no one answered the phone etc etc as per other reviews. Then we were assigned Muhammad Sarwar. At first we had a few issues, but looking back I have to say he had to pick up on a sale that had almost completed three times previously. He did put a lot of effort into getting things finalised for us. He did call us on many occasions and kept us up to date on progress- finally success. Thank you Muhammad.

Hello Ann,

Thanks for your feedback and we are pleased that Muhammad and the team did get you to completion in what proved to be a very extended transaction with 3 buyers pulling out.

Owing to the duration of your case it was always possible that a new conveyancer may need to be appointed to it, but we have a large team at Connect2Law to ensure we always have an experienced lawyer who can step in.

Best regards,

Good conveyancer but dissapointing outcome

Further to my earlier review I am pleased to say things got better. Once in the hands of the conveyancer Muhammad Sawar my sale progressed very well. I am grateful to Muhammad for going over and above in terms of service to bring the sale to exchange and completion. He was often working on things at the weekend and I believe doing all that he could to ensure that I experienced no further problems.

Sadly since posting the above four weeks have past and I am still not in receipt of either a final statement or full settlement of funds I have therefore changed my rating.

Avoid this company at all costs - nearly lost us our property

I have never written a negative review on any company, but I feel a responsibility to submit this as a warning to anyone considering using Connect2Law. We regularly buy and sell properties and Connect2Law are by far the worst solicitors we have ever experienced.

Here are some of the biggest grievances we had during a 3 month conveyancing process:

- No-one picked up the phone to us...ever - the line went straight to voicemail or rang 4 times then went to voicemail. At first we thought this must be due to a busy period for our assigned solicitor Stephanie. After over a week of no response to our emails or voicemails I called their head office - they redirect all calls to a call center, where a virtual assistant is instructed to take messages for you and send an email to the person you are trying to contact. The system they have implemented ensures you cannot speak to anyone from Connect2Law without them calling you first. The opposite of accessible, the company appears to be pushing paying clients away at every opportunity. I don't think I've ever come across a company which has created a system specifically to ignore its client in such a way.

- Consistent lateness - at every stage of the conveyancing process, Connect2Law was late. Sometimes by a day, sometimes by 2 weeks. Excuses ranged from individuals being off sick, individuals (seemingly constantly) taking time off with no communication of who was covering their work or our case, blaming their colleagues or blaming anyone else in the process when we were already aware that the issue rested with Connect2Law. The list goes on.

- Staff - The blame for our terrible experience didn't solely rest with our solicitor Stephanie. Others such as Operations Manager Andre, who didn't respond to any email in a 3 month period, were equally idle. A short confirmation or holding email stating something like 'thank you, we are looking into this issue' is all that was required on many occasions. Instead they chose to go down the strategy of 'ignore the client and hope for the best’.

- Time wasters - I think we spent more time chasing Connect2Law than they spent actually working on our case. Hours and hours of wasted time and additional stress for what was one of the most simple property transactions possible; we had no chain and the sellers had no chain.

- Jeopardized the purchase - Most worryingly of all, the constant lateness of Connect2Law ended up pushing our purchase to the brink of collapse. The seller had already waited patiently for months and it was becoming increasingly difficult for us to use "our solicitor won't respond to us" as a legitimate, but honest excuse. I had to email Connect2Law's CEO directly to get our exchange pushed through on the scheduled day.

The only person in the entire organisation worth mentioning in a positive light is Ed Cooper on the sales team. Efficient and quick, on more than one occasion he escalated our situation outside his remit of sales. Unfortunately for Ed, he was escalating on deaf ears.

Reading some of the positive reviews on TrustPilot, it’s as if they are reviewing a separate company to the one we used, all the 1 star reviews scarily similar to our experience. I urge you not to use Connect2Law. They are cheap, but for £100-200 more you can hire an established law firm who will save you hours of time and stress.

One of the worst companies I have ever dealt with, across any industry.

No matter how many good reviews are on…don't use this firm

No matter how many good reviews are on this site about Connect2Law, please beware. In my experience the conveyor-belt model for conveyancing and strict gate-keeping system for communication does not work in this world and I blame this firm for my simple house sale falling through. I was never told who my conveyancer was, could never get to speak to anyone by phone, and emails went unread for weeks. I pity the assistants who have to answer angry calls from clients. The conveyancers are 'in meetings', 'away from their desk' or simply not available and despite clear instructions, never call back. When my buyers solicitor, my estate agent and myself could net no answer from them in a month I complained to a director. I was cursorily passed to someone else as my complaint related to communications. Two months later I have yet to receive anything from the person in charge of communications! My sale having fallen through a month ago I received a cal this week asking me to provide a document so that we could proceed to exchange! I could go on and on, but this and the other reviews pretty much sum it up.

Would recommend!

The company itself is good. Very quick set up and everything can be done remotely. and the online tracker for your case is very reassuring especially for a first time buyer like me.

The only thing that was disappointing was the gentleman who handled my case... his emails we difficult to understand at points and his grammar and sentence structure were poor...

Other than this I would definitely reccomend

Avoid like the plague!

Don't even know where to start with this shambolic company. Avoid and pay a little more for a better firm. In short:

1. A simple chain free sale took 4.5 months owing to them doing NOTHING for over 7 weeks. I was forgotten about and never allowed to speak to my conveyancer, who apparently was Abdul and then ended up being Poonam ONCE i escalated the urgency of the issue to the CEO after the seller put the flat back on the market due to slow legal action.

2. Constantly lied to that said conveyancer was never at desk, purposely put on hold, customer service managers never called back.

3. Documentation was NEVER vetted properly. I spotted incorrect spellings and numerical figures on paperwork that Poonam failed to spot. This delayed exchange by another two weeks.

4. On day of completion, I had to transfer more money as they made an error with the calculations their end.

A lousy, incompetent firm. If they're busy, they shouldn't take on new clients. You have to chase constantly and even then, no response. I had to go to the CEO to get some sort of reply. It appears whoever this Laura Unite is, is clearly this company's crown jewel as the rest of them are abysmal. Pay a little more and go with someone else. It's not worth the stress or losing your purchase over these cowboys. I'll be escalating this on social media further to call them out. Appears others share the same sentiment.

They will let you down

Case: chain-free flat purchase, first-time buyers, no help-to-buy, not a new build.
I have to admit, the firm's sales department is their greatest asset: they sold us the services committing to 8 weeks to completion.
Now, 13 weeks later we are still in process of sending enquiries. First enquiries were sent 1 week ago and took them another week to review the answers and send the second round. In addition, only this week (13 weeks!) they found out that extra consents from the freeholder and the bank might be needed. How long will it take? No one will answer, because they don't commit to anything anymore.
Initially they seemed responsive, but that's a trap: they hired people to be on the phone to keep clients warm until they realise it's too late in the process.
Don't trust them, they will let you down.

Great value for money- Laura is an excellent case handler

I purchased a property earlier this year and decided to search for my Conveyancing firm online. I shortlisted three firms, including Connect2Law, who had quoted a very competitive fee.

I read their reviews on a number of sites, it was helpful to see where people had concerns with the firm and what they felt they did a great job with. As expected there were mixed reviews, however, for me the content of the positive reviews outweighed the negative ones, and I felt confident when I approached them to act for me for my purchase.

Thankfully, I was not disappointed. My overall experience with Connect2Law was very positive. The majority of my correspondence was with Laura Unite, she was extremely pleasant, quick to reply, transparent and professional. Although, we did not complete within the time frame originally discussed, we were in constant contact throughout and the final completion date was actually more convenient for me.

I am pleased I choose Connect2Law and very fortunate to have had Laura assigned to my case, I have seen numerous positive reviews with her name mentioned, it is apparent that she is a very competent individual, good at her job and enjoys her work, definitely an asset to the firm.

I will use Connect2Law again and have no hesitation in recommending them to family and friends! :)

Appalling

Didn’t follow their own stated procedures, didn’t chase things when prompted (going on holiday instead). It took 9 weeks for them to get hold of /realize they had, a search that had been completed in one day. They repeatedly provided incorrect information and gave inaccurate or misleading advice. They didn’t answer emails, or responded without answering the question asked. An additional 2 weeks delay were caused by them dealing with someone who was , presumably, more important and just ignoring our purchase.
They had to be constantly chased by us and the vendor’s solicitors. The resulting delay of at least 7 weeks ended up costing us well over £1500 and a great amount of stress and inconvenience. All this for a sale that was ultimately unusually straight forward with no legal difficulties or problems with the vendor. I am not even convinced that they did a thorough job and would not be at all surprised if there were emergent issues.
Their charges were as advertised and the very first dealing I had with them was satisfactory, after which it deteriorated. Their phone manner is good and they say all the right things if you actually manage to speak to someone. However, their actions and substance falls well short of what might be reasonably expected.
Nothing would induce me to use this firm again.

After posting, the review showed ‘reviewer contacted’. We were asked for contact details but not actually contacted. Despite what has been implied Connect2Law have made no effort to reach out to us. We did get an unrelated call from their customer care department asking about what we thought of their service. He had absolutely no idea our experience had been negative (obviously had not seen our file/reviews) and was taken aback by the outpouring of grievances and hung up as quickly as possible. Needless to say nothing has been heard since. It is almost as if they don’t care.
