I have (or had) my home and auto bundled with Mercury Insurance Group for over a year now, via Policy Genius (PG). I switched to shopping for insurance via PG when I bought a new home in Spring 2021.
The auto policy was up for renewal this fall and apparently my card on file was declined. Neither Mercury or PG notified me of the decline and my auto insurance was canceled without notice about 3 weeks ago. Which means myself and my family has been driving without insurance during that time. The only reason I'm aware of the lapse in coverage is because the DMV notified me of a fine I have to pay for letting my insurance lapse.
I've spent the last 2 days trying to get in touch with a policy genius rep unsuccessfully so far. And the renewal has to occur through PG (I can't make the change directly). I would say that their diligence in managing my policy as well as their response in resolving this issue is below normal expectations. I will change this review if they can follow up professionally.

I had an accident on Nov 19th. Mercury insurance processed it and called my vehicle a total loss. We sent them our vehicle title and the keys as requested by Mercury and by Dec 10th , they said that a check is on the way from California to Georgia. Dec 20th came and we did not have a check . We called and complained . They told us to wait few more days. Dec 21st we asked them to send us another check via overnight service but they said they have to put stop payment on the previous check supposedly mailed from California first and wait for it to be processed then they will send us another check . On Dec 23rd we received a check from Florida and called Mercury immediately, if we can deposit the check but they said that they have put stop payment on it and we have to wait until Dec 27th for the stop payment to be preceded then they will send us a check to be received by Dec 29th and hopefully cashed after new year. Come to find out that Mercury does this kind of delays on payments all the time. They never sent a check from California and waited until we called and complained on Dec 20th. Then they did a complete CYA and send a check from Florida back dating the check to Dec 10th 2021 and mailed it to Georgia and when we called again , they told us , we will get it soon. On Dec 21st they put a stop payment on it to delay it longer. Two agents kept lying to us for 15 days and as of writing this review, Dec 23th we are still waiting for our check. I do not recommend Mercury for any kind of insurance not even a goat.
After decades of coverage with Mercury insurance, I felt it necessary to change carriers. I had both auto and homeowners' insurance with them. They've been difficult to deal with, cannot usually provide complete and clear answers to my questions, will do anything to get out of paying a claim, etc. But the final straw was that they basically accused me of lying to them (which I didn't), and therefore denied a small claim. This is a company I would NEVER RECOMMEND to anyone.
I was hit by a truck on a rainy night and it totaled my car. The driver took off, hit and run. Mercury denied my claim when I had full coverage. They said that because I did not get the driver information of the hit and run driver they would not pay anything on my claim. Worst insurance company ever!
RECOMMEND PROGRESSIVE OVER MERCURY. HORRIBLY SNOTTY VOICED AND CONDESCENDING IN THOUSAND OAKS OFFICE. THE COMPANY DOES HANDLE CLAIMS WELL BUT I HAVE BEEN WITH THEM FOR YEARS, INQUIRED ABOUT IF WE COULD POSSIBLY LOWER SOME LIMITS AND SAVE ME MONEY AND THEY INSISTED I KEEP MY HIGH LIMITS. SINCE I HAVE NO ASSETS I HAVE BEEN PAYING FOR HIGH COVERAGE FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON AND THEY NEVER EVER EXPLAINED ANYTHING IN DETAIL WHERE I COULD HAVE BEEN PAYING LOWER PREMIUMS ALL ALONG.
My mom has been in multiple accidents so our premium is extremely high! How high? 5k+ annually. Last time she was in an accident, totaled the vehicle, and it was her fault. Mercury Insurance wrote us a 20k check so my mother can purchase a new vehicle.
I have to give credit to Mercury Insurance for giving us excellent service. And yes we pay high premiums, but they always treated us fairly and customer service is superb. There's no hassle and headaches.

I have been with mercury insurance for over 15 years and am very satisfied with them. I called yesterday to check on my policy and was helped by SILVIA. She was very helpful in reviewing my policy and pointed out how I could save some money and still get better coverage. I did send a quick review and gave her high marks, but I failed to mention her name. SILVIA helped me..... Mercury is and excellent company and about 10 years ago my wife had an accident and totaled her car. Mercury was great to deal with and we received a check within a week.
Had them for more than ten years, then I woke up. Last few years they played the game of increasing the mileage on my cars every year which basically increases the rates. Never had any claims in my lifetime. Even after I retired they increased the annual mileage on my cars even though I was no longer commuting. Now my agent says give them annual mileage readings. Maybe tell me to do that ten years ago so I don't get screwed by the insurance company you are pushing....oh wait, that lowers your commission too. Don't recommend.
I was with mercury insurance for over 5 years trouble started in nov 2017 when they cancelled my auto ins due to their error I was and had been on auto pay the whole time. One of their clerks processed my payment on my old closed account So because of their mistake they cancelled my insurance along with that i had an auto to be retired now i cant due to the lapse .They lied and said the reason was they sent mail returned.For weeks i had daily problems abuse lies i got fed and cancelled . Now they want me to pay a fee for the cancel i said no they sent a 50dollar fee to a collection agency
We have cancelled all 3 of our insurance policies with Mercury (2 auto and 1 home owner's) because of the terrible customer service experience we've had. It's unacceptable that our claim wasn't approved and paid out as it should have been based on the water damage and burst pipe under the crawlspace in our bathroom.
I have a high degree of confidence that both your restoration company and your field inspector get incentives from Mercury to deny claims and avoid payouts in cases where damage has been incurred by your customers. Both of them were taking pictures of areas not even related to burst pipe under the house below my bathroom floor, where the pinhole leak was actually found by the plumber.
We had been Mercury customers for 15 years, and saw no appreciation for our loyalty. Good riddance to your shady insurance company. I've given you a 1 star review on Yelp and will discourage any of my friends/family from using Mercury Insurance in the future.
I just opened my new policy renewal and my rates actually went down!! Thank you Mercury. Now I can afford to buy some more stuff for my truck!!
