I am extremely dissatisfied with the conduct of this organisation and its customer service practices.
During my interaction, I requested basic and fundamental information regarding the identity of the company and the nature of its business operations. The representative refused to disclose this information and instead insisted that I complete data protection verification procedures.
The call handler explicitly stated that she was unable to provide any information about the company until I provided personal data. This is wholly unacceptable.
Organisations—particularly those operating in areas such as debt collection or financial services—are expected to clearly identify themselves and state the purpose of their communication when engaging with consumers. The refusal to do so represents a serious failure in transparency and undermines consumer trust.
The representative asserted that this refusal was required under GDPR. This is incorrect and misleading. Data protection legislation does not prevent an organisation from identifying itself; on the contrary, it requires transparency regarding the identity of the data controller and the purpose of processing.
Requiring personal data before providing even the most basic identifying information raises significant concerns regarding compliance with the principles of lawful, fair, and transparent processing. Such conduct may indicate systemic issues in how this organisation interprets and applies its legal obligations.
I consider this matter serious. I have formally referred it to the Information Commissioner’s Office for assessment on the basis of potential non-compliance with transparency requirements. I will also consider pursuing this further through appropriate regulatory or legal channels if necessary.
In particular, the refusal to identify the organisation when directly asked is inconsistent with fundamental data protection principles and acceptable standards of customer engagement.
Overall, this reflects a concerning lack of transparency, accountability, and professionalism. I would strongly advise others to exercise caution when dealing with this organisation.

A sorry tale
These people say that they have been instructed by Ovo to address my mothers apparent debts. My mother was 1 year and 364 days in a care home. Aged 97 years she died in November 2025. I have repeatedly asked Ovo how an empty property can run up hundreds of pounds of debt and why her bills are estimated when she had a smart meter. Ovo don't want to answer they just want these people to harass the family of a dead woman into making a payment. Lovely group.
