Just to clarify for readers on the material too: HOTBIN is made from ARPRO® an expanded polypropylene (EPP), it can look similar at a glance, but it’s not polystyrene.
EPP is tough and impact-resistant, so it’s built to last outdoors. And because it’s also highly insulating, it helps the HOTBIN hold the heat needed for effective hot composting.

This is a solid and well-built unit, especially considering the material it’s made from. It arrived quickly and was securely packaged.
It’s more labour-intensive than a traditional cold compost bin. It requires you to chop materials into small pieces before adding them, which can be time-consuming. I’ve also found it quite difficult to get the unit to reach the recommended temperature, which has been a bit frustrating.
That said, I’m hopeful that it will become easier to use and more effective over time as I get more familiar with the process.

Thanks for the review fab to hear it arrived quickly, well packaged, and feels solid and well built.
Hot composting can feel a little more “hands-on” at the start but the reward are composting in 90 days and no turning etc. The good news is you don’t need to chop everything so small forever, it’s mainly the first few weeks while you’re building the active core. Once it’s established, it becomes much more forgiving, chopping does help the bacteria digest your waste efficiently though.
On the temperature, the most common blockers are:
Not enough volume yet (it usually needs to be at least half full to build a proper hot zone 40°C plus)
Mix balance (too wet = cool/sluggish, too dry = slow; a steady add of shredded paper/cardboard + woodchip does help)
Thermometer position (internal probe into the active centre gives the true reading)
Important to note. You can still produce a good balanced compost in 90 days if you average 30°C for 3 months. Once it’s in its stride, it should feel a lot less like hard work and a lot more like “add waste, make compost.” Hope this helps.

Hot bin had the item back but sadly I list £50 on it for returning the item this was a charge for collection which was al lot for me at the sad time but I would not of been able to use

I’m glad our team was able to help track down the missing part and that everything arrived well packed, but I completely understand why you weren’t able to use it.
Great customer service. Too soon to tell if it makes compost.
Ordering and delivery were super quick and easy. I still haven’t managed to get the bin to heat up, although I’ve started it up from scratch twice now. I thought I’d followed all the instructions. It’s an attractive piece of garden furniture, does not attract flies, and so can be placed nearer the house than my other compost bins. It’s too soon to say how effective it will be. (It might be quite hard work.)

Thanks for such a thoughtful review really pleased to hear you found ordering and delivery were quick and easy.
On the heat: don’t worry, you’re not alone (some trail and error is needed) if it hasn’t warmed up after two restarts, it’s usually something simple we can troubleshoot. The two biggest checks are:
Is the HOTBIN at least half full? You need that volume for the “hot” zone to build.
Are you using the internal thermometer for an accurate reading? (The lid gauge can be a bit optimistic/pessimistic depending on conditions.)
If you have an lawn clippings mix in approx. 20 ltrs with some shredded paper and give it a stir - This should also help to give the temp a bit of a boost.
If you’d like, please drop our support team a message with what you’re adding (roughly how often, and whether you’re adding shredded paper/woodchip) and we’ll help you get it properly cooking, without it feeling like hard work. Once it’s up and running, it should be much more “feed it and forget it” than “hard work in the garden”!

20°C is a good start while things are it’s bedding in. You'll typically see 40°C once the bin is half full and you check the temp with the internal heap thermometer. Just keep adding waste, a little bit of grass goes a long way to boost the temperature. Keep adding a mix (a bit of “dry browns” like shredded paper/cardboard with the wetter waste), you should see the temperature climb further. Arrived quickly
Arrived quickly, looks good, but a bit more complicated than it seems from the website, and mine still hasn't got hot enough after around 4 weeks and 2 go's at boosting it. Also, I may have to stress and get nerdy over filling it!

So easy to set my hotbin up when it arrived. All of the supporting instructions were clear and easy to follow. I was shocked how quickly it heated up, just 3-4 days to reach ideal temperature.

Read the instructions carefully before you buy.
We found the bin quite tricky to assemble and are disappointed that the lid doesn’t simply flip up like the smaller versions shown on the website. When we fitted the lid it took both of us to get it off again - not practical in frequent use. So we have decided not to push the lid fully shut to make it easier to use.
I feel the design needs some improvements.

We appreciate your feedback about the assembly and the lid. The HOTBIN Mega is self-assembly which we do advertise on our website and is designed to seal tightly to retain heat. Although it should take a little force to fit together it should not be impossible – We see you placed your order with Marshalls have you spoken to them regarding your concerns or to our customer support team who can help with assessing if any adjustments can be made to your HOTBIN to make the process easier.
Regarding emptying the compost, the HOTBIN Mega is designed to work like a traditional batch composter but with the benefit that the waste is completely contained and so the heat is increased allowing you to compost faster- but this does mean to remover the waste you either have to dismantle or you can dig out from the top to remove the compost.
We thank you for your feedback and will pass this onto our design team for them to look at any potential future modifications to the HOTBIN Mega.

Feeding the HOTBIN every 2-3 days should help to maintain the temperature in the hot composting zone.
Just to note that the first batch of compost you produce will be the roughest bath of compost as there was no initial het in the HOTBIN, but as you continue the process you will find the quality of the compost produced will increase.
