Ideally I would give then a -5. This morning I parked at Front St Tynemouth Loc 5875 and paid £6.60 for three hours. I returned to the car to find a Parking Charge Notice for £70 for a time within the period for which the fee was paid. Turns out Loc 5875 also relates to the Great N Rd in Barnet!!! Same code two locations. When I looked carefully it did say Barnet on my phone screen, in small text, but I was more concerned with getting the location code right than anything else... which I did. So I've paid Barnet Council £6.60 and N Tyneside £35 (for paying early). What a scam!!! This app should be banned.

I used to enjoy using this app but more recently it has become almost unusable. In certain locations, the app just hangs when you are trying to make payment, even when connected to the local shop's wifi. It also sometimes cannot find the car park you are in. Last time, I entered the code on the side of the machine only for the app to state that the location was not recognised (?!). It has deteriorated so much I now have gone back to using the pay machines in the car park or at the side of the road as it is the only way I can be certain of paying for the car parking - assuming the machine is not out of order !

Tbf I've only had good experiences.

One time I got a fine, so I looked at the app on that date and realised I paid.
So I appealed only to realise I selected my old car reg like a plum.
They responded to my appeal, saying you selected the wrong car, but we will cancel the charge this time anyway.

The worst parking app I have used. Beware that you may end up paying inadvertently.

Using the iphone app:

1. When you click to pay, the app hangs (endless spinner). It never returns with confirmation but it takes your money anyway. You do get an SMS confirmation but I can imagine people thinking the payment has failed and paying twice.

2. If you go through the booking process but do not press the pay now (or whatever) button and then close the app, it will take payment anyway. This should be illegal.

I and others reported the first problem more than a year ago but there is no acknowledgement and the issue has not been fixed. I am left wondering if it's a deliberate design decision to take accidental payments..

It tells you everything you need to know that in nearly 1000 reviews on this site, not one person has had a single good thing to say about this company. I have used the Pay by phone app twice - once for a short stay at Cambridge Station and once at Norwich Station.
Never again!
Both times it has charged me a whole day or a whole night when I only put an hour on.
Total stays add up to about an hour and yet I have been charged £15.50 and £8.50 respectively.
It's a con. Avoid if possible.

This is the most annoying thing in this bloody world. Fraudsters. I spent 25min to add card and new number plate you sob’s.

This app doesn’t even deserve one star. After yesterday’s fiasco, I deleted and reinstalled the app in the hope that it would work … it did not.

We were charged for 4 hours parking when our car was nowhere near the car park, and we had not been in the car park. I contacted PayByPhone as soon as I noticed I had been charged and told them our car was not there. I was told they cannot offer refunds but to contact the owner of the car park, Britannia Parking.

I will never trust PayByPhone again

St. Butolphs in Norwich.. a car park in a lake.. little more than a field in a city which fills up with Great Lakes of water making it difficult to find a space where you won’t exit the car into o e if the lakes.. then without warning until the app is downloaded and you need to press to pay.. they’ve added another 40p for the convenience… these people need putting out of business until they can provide a decent service

Parked at Totteridge and Whetstone tube. Left car, as normally you pay on leaving via machine, machine not accepting card payments at this time! Tried to use the app, didn’t work, called the number given by machine, got asked some questions, got sent a code, put in code many times, but recorded voice kept asking for it again and again, then eventually I thought I had paid, but the payment was from that time onwards, not for the time I had had. I paid for one day as that is all I could make work, but have no confidence that I have paid anything, impossible to tell. I now fear I will get a penalty notice and will have to spend hours of my life trying fight this. Your app is not fit for purpose. You have no simple alternative like call a number and just speak with someone, or pay over the phone.

I had to park my car near lewisham hospital on the 16/07/2025 for a checkup when I got there I found this pay by phone app I downloaded the app and started putting my details and put down 59 minutes thinking I was going to be charged for one hour wich cost £3 but no they charge me £5.45 when I complained they said I put down 90 min even if it is how they calculated peaple be aware they are scams they are a cheap thieves shaving penny's of working people

Had to register and wanted to pay for 4 hours but would only let me pay for 1 hour. Other motorist said this happens all the time and to renew when ran out. Was then unable to get back on to pay as kept getting "error in connection" which meant I went over time and got a £50 PCN. No empathy from Council and PayByPhone will not accept responsibility. Rude and uncaring.
Your response is typical of the poor customer service you have just proved. Professional? My arse. You don't know the meaning of the word.

New customer standing in Beckenham car park trying to set up new account on Mobile. Failed transaction 5 times and nervous about 0.99p donation to XR Academy and Estrivion.com. Abandoned attempts. Contacted by Nationwide Fraud today to say a transaction for £43 on Credit Card had been declined by their system. New card being issued but having to wait few days.

Would NEVER recommend this PayByPhone App. Beware!!!

Took an hour going round in circles to join and register card. App asked for a number, but didn't say which number. Awful.

My account has been locked. I can't speak to anyone. The robot Parker is useless. The phone number provided doesn't allow me to talk to anyone. I can't reset my password either. All I want to do is get my account unlocked as I have to use this app to pay for parking at work. Ridiculous

Steer clear at all costs. Tried to load the app and pay for parking ended up paying for a subscription to a gaming and film streaming website due to the app defaulting to numerous pop ups. Now have the inconvenience of being without a debit card as I was advised by my bank to cancel it and apply for a replacement

I don't have an account and my cache is cleaned on a regular basis but for some reason the website has saved my details and so when I last went to use it, it applied the ticket to the vehicle I previously used and not the vehicle I was in. Having not had any luck trying to find out to cancel the parking from thier website or help bot and with the lack of any phone number to speak to an actual person (again the 'help' bot was absolutely useless) I brought I new ticket using cash (I had to walk 5 mins away and back to get the correct change, risking a ticket...) and sent an email for support. In fairness the email support was very quick, replying after 5 mins who told me had i cancelled within 5 mins of buying the ticket i would have got a refund along with details on how to cancel. Not much help by the time they told me but I just won't be using this company again. Why they can't make finding the cancellation infomation easier, or even have a cancel button on the website final confirmation page, I don't know. Even a summary page before committing money would be 100% better.
Now just waiting to see how they handle the deletion of my information, considering I have no account but they have saved my details, I don't know how thats going to go. Companies like this is why this country is dying.

Trying to get a VAT receipt is appallingly difficult having to register and log on to multiple sites, which then thrown an error (Value was either too large or too small for an Int32) which is a school-child coding error.
If you can use another app for parking payment (or cash) do as it'll be more reliable.
