Keep Away From Depaso Car Hire Malaga
When we got home our card was charged 780 euros for a burnt out clutch. Despite sending an email asking for details and disputing this we were ignored. A clutch is a wearable part and they have no right charging for this, we only put 150km on the car, mostly motorway, and how do we know the previous owner didnt damage the clutch. Also a burnt clutch would render the car not drivable. They said they are charging this as we didnt take out the full comp insurance with them. Ive yet to meet an insurance company that will cover you for a clutch. Im surprised they didnt charge us for the brake pads as well.
When dropping the car back, the Delpaso car rep was hunting for additional charges and asking about the vast array of dents and scratches to the car. Luckily I took a video of the car on all sides on the day of hire. You think they would have their own evidence of any damage but thankfully I was very thorough. They are a cowboy outfit and I would advise everyone to keep away. Im pursuing this through the European Consumer Commission which has won cases like this in the past for hire companies charging for clutches. This is a known scam, which Delpaso are happy to publicly flaunt.
Do not rent a car from Delpaso Cars (at Malaga Airport)
We ordered a Nissan Juke (or equivalent) and a child seat for 1st – 8th June 2023 from Malaga Airport. We were told to accept a Seat Arona 1.0 TSi even though a Juke was available. The car hire was 142.87 euro and the seat a further 42 euro giving a total of 184.87 Euro. In addition, we were charged a security deposit hold of 1,600 euro. The booking was made through Discover Cars to Delpaso; Confirmation No 441164.
At the Delpaso office we were given a blank sketch of the car and told to photograph/video the car for any damage. I asked the male representative to check the car with me and to agree any existing damage by marking up the sketch of the car and commenting in the Notes section. He explained that this was not company policy. (I have been hiring cars for holidays and work for nearly 40 years and have never witnessed such an ‘open’ policy as this).
The child seat was for my grandson in Nerja and as we had two large suitcases, we put one in the boot and one on the passenger seat. There was no room to install the child seat so we put it on top of the suitcase in the boot. We photographed what existing damage that we could see easily but the car was under a roof and so in the shade. We must have missed the fine scratch across the offside door as we did not photograph it.
The next evening when we came to install the child seat, we noticed that one strap only had already been inserted into the lock (see attached photograph). Because of this we were unable to remove the single strap nor put the second strap in meaning that we could not use the seat safely at all during the whole holiday. This was very frustrating and disappointing.
We did not telephone DelPaso to notify them of the seat defect as we thought that there was little that could be done (We did not want to drive all the way back to Malaga to argue our case nor did we expect Delpaso to send a courier to us). Instead, we assumed that we would have to put up with the matter and get a full refund when we were to drop the car off on the 8th June.
We arrived at the Delpaso office just after 1500 on the 8th June. I originally went to drop off the keys with the representative who had given us the car on the 1st but he redirected me to another representative, Alba. I immediately told her that we had not been able to us the child seat and asked that I might be given a full refund for it. Alba seemed set back by this request and said that she would need to speak with her manager for her approval. When she returned, she told me that her manager had declined the refund on the grounds that we should have checked the seat before taking the car away on the 1st. I asked if I might discuss this with her manager but she said that I could not as she was in a meeting. I was disappointed with this response and argued that I should be allowed to escalate the matter to a more senior member of staff such as an assistant manager or supervisor. At this point Alba told me that my hand gestures were making her very angry so I instead stopped using hand gestures and was very measured in my dialogue with her. She, on the other hand, proceeded to raise her voice many times at me as I continued to argue my case.
Alba then proceeded check the car with my daughter suggesting that each and every mark and stone scratch needed to be accounted for. Fortunately my daughter’s photographs of the car proved all these marks to have been pre-existing apart from a very light scratch on the offside door which we had not noticed previously so had not photographed.
Alba returned to the office with my daughter and me to study a table of damages and explained that I would have to pay over an additional 193.60 euro for the damage. I have looked at my schedule (attached) that came with the car documents where a scratch is 160 euro. She told us that 190 Euros was a very generous offer (even though the scratch was very light and could be removed with rubbing compound in all probability).
I argued that this was unfair and that Delpaso should have provided us with a sketch and list of the existing damages to the car and that the representative should have escorted us during the car inspection at the commencement of the hire. Alba proceeded to respond loudly, angrily and demonstrably to my daughter and me that she was offering a generous settlement and that we must accept it. My daughter and me remained calm and measured as my earlier loud protestations had made Alba angry.
Alba printed out a standard letter setting out the damages as 193.60 euro and told me that I must sign it to release the remainder of the deposit. I asked again if I could discuss this with her manager or assistant manager or the representative that had rented us the car originally. Again, Alba reacted loudly and angrily to this request pointing that her manager was in a meeting for the rest of the day and that I could not discuss the matter with anyone else.
Would never use them again!!
Would never use them again!!
Booked the car through Doyouspain got to the DelPaso office to be confronted by a 180 euro bill after I believed that I’d payed for the car in uk before leaving home!! Felt conned!!
Car was dirty and bits falling off it inside and not the car I booked , something similar but less expensive never want to use them again
Have been using Delpaso for many many…
Have been using Delpaso for many many years. Always receive a professional service and car is of a very high standard. Staff are always polite and helpful.
A hire company that goes the extra mile
I have used Delpaso and have found them to be a super company to deal with. Being English with little Spanish is never a problem they have always been clear and curtious.. We hired in July/August 2022 and during our stay my darling wife died Delgado despite being peak season extended the car rental period for me so i could make the arrangements for my wife's funeral etc. They did this without fuss, delay and for no extra payments. I was grateful for their kindness and understanding of my circumstances at that time.
I and my children continue to use Delpaso Malaga and if we have ever had any problems eg wiperblade damaged they replaced it no fuss.
It is true we always take the Full pack as it worth the extra to take care of the car and to be able to get straight out of the car and onto the courtesy bus to the airport.
I have no experience of Delpasos other cheaper hire packages but the savings can not be worth all the worry where to park the car, which anti tourist individual will scratch it and the micro inspection on picking the car up and returning it.
I can highly recommend from ALL my experiences with Delpaso Malaga that they are a good company with well trained customer focused employees and a car is a car!

Great service at good prices
I rented a CAR from DelPaso Malaga twice and was very satisfied both times. The staff was courteous and checkout and checkin was promptly completed.
I recommend purchasing the car with comprehensive coverage via an email to their reservations department.
Purchasing Insurance coverage through a third party Forces all CAR rental operators to reserve a signifikant amount of cash against credit cards. DelPaso is not umique here.
Do NOT rent a car with Delpaso…
Do NOT rent a car with Delpaso Malaga!!!! They asked me for more money in order to get the car i booked. I refused and called them thiefs. Walked away. Got my advance back threw Doyouspain. NEVER again!!!!
The company is charging you for damages you haven’t done
The company is carging you for damages you have not done. They look for any scratches they can find when you return the car, and if you didn’t find the scratch and took a picture of it before you took the car, you have to pay. I wonder how come authorities hasn’t closed down the company yet. This is a left over from the wild west
Another brilliant rental from Del Paso…
Another brilliant rental from Del Paso I wouldn't use anyone else in Malaga. So helpful and great prices. their service is second to none.
Illegal Practices and Very Poor Customer Service. Untrustworthy Company.
I've left a review for DoYouSpain as well but wanted to make sure that I left reviews for both companies involved.
We booked a car through DoYouSpain for the first time. We usually use RentalCars.com and have never had any issues with them. We arrived in Spain at the car hire place, DelPaso Car Hire, and they immediately told us that they were going to charge us 167 Euros because I didn't have an international driving licence. They wouldn't budge or give us a refund. We had been travelling for 12 hours already and had no inclination to start looking for another car so we reluctantly paid it. I drive regularly abroad, especially in Spain, and have never had this issue before.
We did some research and it turns out that the UK can issue something called an IDP (International Driving Permit) not an international driving licence as stated on their terms and conditions. The government website states that one is not needed is Spain for periods of up to 6 months so we rightly assumed that we did not need one. There is more than one type so even if you were to get one to make sure you are covered you wouldn't know which one to get anyway. This is yet another way of hire companies or brokers screwing money out of tourists and is not only unethical but illegal.
I would like to emphasize that as a UK citizen you DO NOT need an IDP to drive in Spain for a visit of less than six months.
I have contacted DoYouSpain and and they replied within minutes with a fob off response and haven't responded to any further emails (I have sent 3 since).
We paid around £96 for the car hire and the additional insurance they charged was the equivalent of £147 so quite a bit more than the basic car hire. Post-covid, some companies are still doing tourists over when they should be trying to attract them. DoYouSpain and DelPaso Car Hire have lost a customer and have another bad review which I plan to post on all major review sites and social media. I wasn't the only UK customer this happened to on the day so I hope that they do the same thing so that people can make an informed decision about giving their money to unethical and uncaring companies like these two.
We are going throgh the process of claiming it back through our payment card and if that doesn't work, we will go down the legal route and we have told them that.
Do not use DoYouSpain or DelPaso to hire a car in Spain. It will cause you problems.
I had been concerned, but my experience was great
Having seen so many bad reviews, I thought seriously about not booking with them. But they had pricing that was so much better than the well known international brands, I took a chance. I booked the full coverage in advance, so that even if there was a question over previous damage, I'd be covered. Worked out perfectly. One point a previous user noted was that of you get the car in the dark, you can't see any marks. The next day I did notice some scratches that I hadn't seen the night before, but I hadn't really looked. Points to consider is that they don't take Amex, which a lot of people may use for excess insurance. Also they have a bus that runs very frequently, but on the pickup from the airport they only had one spot. So you might have to wait. My summary recommendation is you will save a lot of money, but get the full package insurance at time of booking (not at the airport) and you won't have any problems.
Delpaso Malaga. Don't use them
Don't use them. They charge you for ekstra 73 € in deposit, saying that you Visa Card cannot be used.

Absolutely horrible.
Absolutely horrible.
Please don't book Del Paso Malaga.
If you don't get the (way too expensive) assurance with them, be assured they will let you pay. They will find a scratch. And they don't work with forms that show the damage. They leave it up to you. You must take pics. Also in the dark. But they will find a scratch for you when you return the car. It's as if they know. They are trained. They show you immediately the underside bumberscratch of 1,5cm that you did not see. 193 Euro. Yes! This way they get you paying anyway. 100% sure you will pay. The biggest scam in car rentals in Spain. Unbelievable that people still go there after all these reviews. But what can we do? Go to court? Nope. Write a review is what we do, to help you all.
Shameful company
Shameful company
A company to avoid. After my experience, I wrote the following email to the CEO of the company. Sadly with no response.
Dear Mr Matthews
I trust this email finds it's way to you and finds you well.I have used Delpaso care hire, Malaga on several occasions over recent years.
I would like to give you some feedback pertaining to my recent visit to your Malaga rental company on Friday 13th January. Booked through "Discover Cars" with booking number DC-4374953
A brief explanation in chronological order of the events leading to why I am writing to you are as follows.
Two years ago, I rented a vehicle from Delpaso. I have my own extended car hire insurance for hire cars and therefore declined that offered by Delpaso. I have learned that if one doesn't take this insurance, that it is wise to take photos and a video of the vehicle at the depot, as recommended by staff there. This I did and on returning the car, was told that the door lock had been tampered with, thus incurring a reparation cost. I was not told to check the lock and there was no visible sign of damage, rendering the photos quite useless.
On November 15th 2022 I again rented a vehicle from Delpaso, rental number 220140852. Again, full insurance coverage was not purchased and photos and videos were taken by me prior to driving, as previously recommended. I had not thought of checking the door lock however. On retuning the vehicle, the staff member who checked the car in, again claimed that the door lock had been tampered with and wanted to charge for this damage.
I found it very suspect that this would happen twice consecutively (particularly as the car was kept in a secure car park) and I questioned this finding with the staff member.
He agreed (sheepishly), to "let me off" on this occasion and suggested that I book direct at Delpaso next time.
On January 13th, as mentioned above, I returned to Spain to collect my vehicle.
I was told that I could only hire the car if I paid a further 273 euros for full insurance cover, despite having my own insurance. The rental agreement cost was 39 euros!!
It was claimed that on the previous occasion I rented that I had been told to book direct through the Delpaso website and consequently was denied a rental vehicle unless I paid the full insurance premium. I was however, not told that this would be a requirement for future contracts. I declined to pay the full insurance and was therefore denied the rental.
One can argue that I should have booked directly with Delpaso, however using an agent such as Discover cars is far better value. Furthermore, the cost of full insurance with Delpaso is extortionate and clearly a means of enhancing revenue.
As the consultant at Discover cars put it, I have been effectively "blacklisted" with your company. This is clearly the case, thanks to my questioning of the two incidents with the vehicle's lock.
Despite extensive research of your terms and conditions, finding no reason to deny me rental, I'm afraid I must concede defeat, as the customer appears to be the loser with Delpaso. It is not surprising that 87% of feedback on Trustpilot gives Delpaso a 1 star review, (with accompanying negative comments).
I would be very appreciative to hear your views and comments
Total Scam avoid
Total Scam avoid
They demand another €235 on top of rental already paid if you don’t have an international driving licence. It is not a requirement in Spain but it’s in their small print.
I am a 70 year old seasoned traveller and have hired cars all over the world and have never once been asked for an international driving licence.
They then get aggressive when you ask for your money back.
Thieves we lost our money and got a taxi. They are an insult to their lovely country and should be ashamed of themselves.

Much better than expected
Well, I have not been asked to write this review by the rental company but to my surprise the rental worked quite well. Of course we were met with the usual upsell of an insurance we in our case did not need (which we did not buy) and did expect to get scammed upon return. I can only say that the lady handling the return was fair and to the point. A pleasent surprise and we will be back for more
WHAT A NIGHTMARE - AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Good morning,
We have checked your booking and seen that this fact is stated on the Terms and Conditions.
You are able to drive in Spain with your license, but if the rental company puts this condition in order to release a car, we have to follow it.
Please note that it is very important to check carefully all the Terms and Conditions in order to avoid this kind of situations.
Kind regards,
Silvia

These rip-off thieves have a good scam going against British Tourists…
You must have a international driving license to hire any of their vehicles as British driving license not valid unless you pay for an extra insurance cover ,my was another €209 on top of the price I already paid so now €313 euros if you have a British Driving license …I obviously refused.
I contacted Do You Spain immediately by phone while in the office and they also refused a refund…….
Other British tourists in their office told me they were also ripped off ,stung with the same clause in there T&Cs.
I returned to airport got my car hire from firefly at €94 all in collected my car in 10mins and incidentally they never asked or mentioned a international driving license….STRANGE that.
I have been hiring cars in Malaga 10 years and 2 -3 times a year and this is the first time I was told I need international driving or pay full insurance add on as UK license not recognised or valid only if you take there insurance.
They charged me an extra €200 because I…
They charged me an extra €200 because I did not have an IDP. It was too late to cancel the booking so I had no choice but to pay. There IS NO LEGAL basis for charging anyone from the UK who holds a UK photo licence any extra to hire a car. THIS IS A SCAM. I am still trying to get my money back. AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS.
