Unbelievably appalling

I cannot say how appalling my late mother's experience was in Barchester care. She went there after contracting Covid and was a size 12/14 on admittance. It was lockdown and I sent her food and drinks and masks. When I saw her two months later after lockdown she had visibly lost weight. She had also had a "romance" with a male resident until he was chucked out suddenly, leaving her suddenly alone again. The nurse in charge of the floor had joked that she would have to look at contraception for them when I visited. I was appalled. My mother had Alzheimer's but the care there was paltry. I visited regularly and every time she had lost weight. She spent her day roaming the hallways. I was told she was eating and was having the nutritional drinks I sent but four months after admittance she looked like a concentration camp victim. She was covered in skins tears and bruises - and on one occasion a member of staff knocked her over with a trolley my mother was holding on to. On one occasion they told me she would not eat, but when I took food in she ate a packet and-a-half of sandwiches and a box of four cakes in one go. The staff were unhelpful and complained that they were understaffed and the manager was frequently off ill. There was often a row about which floor opened the front door to visitors so you were left waiting, even when there was only an hour to visit your loved one - I waited for half-an-hour on one occasion before anyone answered the bell. Staff locked themselves in the office to do paperwork and often there was no one on the floor, it seemed. I wanted to get my mother a private scan and I was told the local GP would only visit the dementia floor for end of life purposes because of Covid and so she could not be referred as he would not visit. I decided to remove my mother urgently when I visited and she was literally skin and bone and could not get out of her chair. A member of staff I asked to help me simply raised her eyes to heaven as if it were a huge trial - she and all the other staff were in the dining room having a meeting while residents were left to their own devices that day. I was told my mother was sleeping through the night but when she returned home it was clear she was allowed to roam all night and had been sedated during the day. Her bed was never made when I visited and I had queried why this was. Each time I enquired as to "why", I was given some story that put the blame on my mother or concealed the truth of the situation. I was told she did not like the drinks and milkshakes I sent - they were stored on top of her wardrobe. When she returned home she was starving and dehydrated and drank and ate everything in sight - the carer I hired at home was horrified at the state of her. Her skin was like tissue paper through dehydration and she weighed under seven stone - from being a healthy size 12/14 - even size 16 on occasion - when she went to Barchester. She also had a urine infection. She rallied but would not sleep at night because she was used to sleeping during the day and roaming round at night. The care home told me they had lots of residents like that - when I visited there was no one supervising them at all and my mother fell constantly while there and was hospitalised on occasion as a result. In July I had been told by the hospital that she was very far from an end of life situation. She came home in September and was hospitalised for dehydration days after arriving home, despite drinking well. She went to another care home to recuperate - supposedly. The proposal was she would be assessed for continuing care. Of course, social services turned her down for continuing care and sent the letter the day after the assessment because my mother owned a house. I had tried to get her to a care home near home after her urinary infection but the hospital social worker said she needed assessment and sold it as my mother being entitled to continuing care funding. It is clear that there was never any intention to grant this. After five weeks of "assessment" by social services - who turned up for half-an-hour one morning to see her during the five weeks, I managed to transfer her to the care home near home I had wanted her to go to while she was in hospital. She arrived there and died two days later after five weeks of "assessment" by social services, which mainly involved lorazepam sedation and palliative care. Again, the food and drinks I sent her were not opened, even though when I visited her she gulped them down. Your loved one will have a DOLS slapped on them immediately by the care home, hospital, GP, social services. Make sure you know why DOLS - deprivation of liberty - is being applied for. They will say it is just for medication, but will try everything under the sun to keep your loved one in care, especially if you are paying £5,000 a month for the room. I could say more - perhaps to a lawyer. Be warned.

My mother died at the Barchester

My mother died at the Barchester, Ottley House, Shrewsbury in December 2019. Thankfully I have now found a proper Trustpilot website where I can at long last air my views about this nursing home, and without all the "flowery" 5 star reviews on the Barchester website! (Not one low marking in sight!).

My mother suffered dementia, and was on the dementia ward, whilst I realise that these patients cannot be locked in rooms, there was no supervision of those patients who were mobile. The family were shocked that one male patient was allowed to wander around either naked or in various stages of undress, and on occasions we even found shoes belonging to him in my mother's room! This was upsetting and embarrassing not only for visitors, but I felt upset on this poor man's behalf as well.

Books and glasses belonging to mum often went missing. The books if found and returned, were more often found torn and battered. On Mothers Day of that year, I took a large vase full of Daffodils which delighted Mum. I found out later they had been removed after I had left. The reason being given, when I queried their removal, was that "the patients might eat the flowers"!! When I said that other patients shouldn't be in Mum's room, all I got was excuses. At the time I was so exasperated with the home and their constantly shooting my queries down in flames I ceased to contact them, (but, I might add only after I had told them that I would rather slash my wrists than end up in their home!!)

I now have an absolute fear of ever going into a nursing home, as I found Ottley House not only depressing but without dignity for dementia patients. Frankly I hope I "pop my clogs", long before I ever get to that stage!

To my mind the home is all front of house, all nice and welcoming, but once beyond the door into the Dementia Ward its another world. If I could award Ottley House no stars I would, and I would not recommend the home to anyone who has a member of the family suffering dementia.

This is a warning to anyone…

This is a warning to anyone contemplating signing a contract for a loved one to enter a Barchester Home. You will note that the contract includes a 5.9% escalation clause, section 4. You should be aware that the company has decided to "rip up" that clause for next year and will be increasing prices by closer to 10%. The reason does not appear to be in accordance with the contract. It effectively claims that any increase in costs can be used to justify the company not complying with its obligations. This company clearly does not believe that contractual obligations apply to them. Therefore, when you sign a contract with them the annual increase is whatever they want it to be, but will not be less than 5.9% irrespective of what inflation actually is.

Alice Grange Kesgrave

Do not even consider sending anyone you care about to this appalling place which calls itself a CARE home. It most certainly doesn’t care for anyone! All it cares about is making money!
My 90 year old mother spent 2 years in this home. The level of care was unbelievable with one carer per twelve residents not unusual. The carers were good but couldn’t cope and had an impossible job. Two baths a week was difficult for them with my mother often being left on her own until the water went cold. She has Parkinson’s which means she relies entirely on their help. She had a bad fall as the carers forgot to leave her a commode by the bed.
She was then given a letter by the management saying she was being evicted and must leave after 28 days. The trumped up reasons for this was that she would not go to hospital even though the paramedics understood why she didn’t want to and agreed with her.
We have tried to approach management on various occasions to try to resolve issues to no avail. They never reply.
All of that for £80,000 a year! Disgusting!!
We have involved CQC, the Ombudsman and our MP and are looking forward to those responsible being held accountable.

Against human rights and pushes medical apartheid. Stay clear at all costs. Does not put the health and well-being of its employees at the forefront of its business. Peter Calverley is an arrogant, unethical senior manager, a disgraceful and discriminating company.

Awful not worth the money

I used to work for this awful company at Westergate House the company has changed so much over the last few years going from good to awful.

All Barchester homes look lovely inside and out but that's where it ends.At Westergate House they do very little activities, they used to go out to the seaside , cooking icing cakes and biscuits ect now its nothing. The manager seems to think he is running a 5* Hotel instead of a care home. The residents are not allowed papers, magazines or plants near them in the lounge as the manger said it makes the lounge look untidy . The residents are not allowed to do icing in the lounge incase it makes a mess, all they do is quizzes or watch TV waiting to die. The food is the cheapest meat you can buy and very small portions. They once had crumpets with marg on them but they were not even toasted. A man needed a special diet which they bought at first and then stopped, so his skin got red and sore and we were told to put his cream on. They advertise a 24 hour menu and it says you can anything they like for breakfast ,but that's not true its either porridge or toast. There are no handmade cakes.
There is a very large turnover of staff they recently lost the main chef and head of housekeeping because they treat their staff so appalling! The staff are so short the ones there work 60 hours plus a week without even asking them.
The hot water is very hit and miss sometimes residents have to go without a wash or bath but the care assistants are all leaving one cannot bath a person and answer call bells which the manager times. Management NEVER help out they won't even answer the door. The wheelchairs all need replacing, but as long as you have Chandeliers hanging it's alright.
The care assistant now has to do care work ,plus housework, plus kitchen work if needed. This is because the management have cut the amount of staff all over ,most probably so that the CEO can receive his £1million pound pay rise ,while doing very little ,but the poor hard working care staff get forgotten. I expect all the Management and office staffs had a rise. The CEO had a £1 million pound pay rise yet they emailed the staff asking the take a holiday UNPAID !!!! Barchester can't see why the staff are upset and angry about this.
I wouldn't even put my cat in there overnight let alone a loved relative. Your relative would get better treatment in an cat or dog kennels and a lot cheaper. Westergate house is over priced and not value for money. Your relative will not get the care they deserve and pay for. Despite reporting all this to CQC nothing is done they are an accident waiting to happen.

Upton Bay - Vibrant and full of life

I honestly cannot speak more highly of this beautiful home. I simply love working here. I love that feeling waking in the morning knowing I am doing something I am truly passionate about and in a position to give the best version of myself to all that live there. Whilst many remark on the beautiful aesthetic and attention to detail given it is beyond this and has real substance. The home has a vibrant energy and full of life, Everything is about the residents they don't just get great care they get a great life living at Upton, so positive and reaffirming knowing that I am aiding and facilitating this and quite the departure from other care settings
The level of support and input we get from management is something else and we are constantly learning and evolving. nothing appears to be too much. I have worked in care for many years yet this is by far the best home and I feel so incredibly lucky to have joined this great family of people, I know that i'm making a genuine difference in peoples lives. We need more homes like this then we would have many more people entering the care profession.
such a heart-warming, caring, warm, outgoing place. I feel privileged to be part of Upton Bay

Supportive and friendly work place

Upton Bay Care Home is a wonderful workplace with a real family feel and a brilliant team of employees. Always felt appreciated and supported by a lovely management team who work hard to care for the staff whilst striving to run an exceptional care home. My day is full and varied, every day is different, it's a lovely place to work, good perks. Good teamwork, regular staff meetings, coffee shop and hairdresser on site. Excellent, offer in house training, opportunity to climb the ladder, friendly, if they something more they will advise and encourage you to go further. Some of the best people you will ever meet work for Upton Bay. No matter what team you work for, everyone is so friendly and always willing to help and support when they can. The company promotes wellbeing and authenticity and you do feel proud and appreciated as an employee. I`m very happy to work here.

I was very fortunate to be one of the first members of staff chosen to open our lovely new home, Upton Bay in Hamworthy, Poole.

Not only is the home stunning, inside and out, but the facilities we have to offer are simply incredible, a top favourite are our spectacular spa bathrooms.

Our manager has done a fantastic job putting our team together.
Everyone is so hard working, friendly and welcoming.

As a team, we will always do our very best at ensuring your loved ones are well looked after and cared for. Nothing is too big an ask.

I highly recommend Upton Bay.
